Dear Caye,
In A History of Slovakia: A Struggle for Survival page 3 of maps shows
Slovak Counties in Hungary. Zemplin County would have Humenne and Michalovce
in it. Presov was in Saris County and Kosice in Abov County.

Hi Tom,

Old Also and Felso (Lower and Upper) Jeszen, today Horne and Dolne
Jaseno,
are just SSW of Martin and Vrutky (old Ruttka). The Jeszenszkys
and
Ruttkays were among quite a group of nobles in that area that
intermarried.
Their names appear over and over in the church records. Most of
them were
Evangelical. My husband's gg-grandmother was a Ruttkay, and there
are many
of them in the area today. We were there during the fall of 2002,
and I
think we found about 20 Ruttkays in the Vrutky phone book-too many
to try to
contact, especially about relationships from the mid-1800s. So we
didn't
bother. But it is a beautiful area to visit. Take lots of
pictures.

We arranged beforehand to have a translator travel
with us, but
she was not easy to find. She actually came all the way from
Kosice to help
us. You will not find English speakers everywhere (they are more
likely to
know German or Russian), so we felt more comfortable having her
along.
Perhaps we could have found someone once we were there, but we
didn't want
to take the chance.

We were cautioned before we went not to expect to
learn very
much during our visit, that we could do better research right here
through
the LDS records. Our experience bore that out. Joyce seems to echo
those
sentiments as well.

I have not run into your Zigmund yet, but if I do,
I'll let you
know. It would be helpful if you knew approximately when he was
born. In
turn, I am looking for Susanna, Boldizsar, or Gyorgy Ruttkay, who
were
probably born very early in the 1800s, and their father, Pal.
Haven't found
them yet, but I'm still looking.

I know you will enjoy your trip. Let us know how you
make out.

Janet

Subject: [S-R] Laskos from Bartos Lehotka

Hello,

I am a new subscriber with roots in both the Kremnica and Vrutky
areas. My

ggrandfather was Anton LACZKO (LATZKO) married to Anna Geyer, who
lived and

died in Bartos Lehotka or Kremnica.

My other ggrandfather Zigmund RUTTKAY came from what is now
Vrutky. He

married Zuzanna Jeszenszky, daughter of Kristof Jeszensky. She was
from a

place called Nagy Jeszen. I am thinking it is the town called
Jasene on

current maps. I am searching for Zigmund's parents names.

I have an opportunity to travel to Vrutky and Kremnica next month
(March,

2004) and would appreciate advice on how to begin a search of the
area.

Plans are to visit the archives, take pictures of the sites and,
as we have

already identified many people in the Slovak phone directory who
could be

cousins, make some visits and phone calls. Unfortunately I speak
only

English, but am hoping to find someone there to help us with the
language.

Thanks,

Tom Lasko

Jennifer,
Two comments.
First: Hodonin is located very near to the Slovak border. You should check:

http://www.iarelative.com/sastin.htm

you will find some of your surnames listed there. Perhaps I can help, as
I am also descended from MIHALIK.

Second: Please type in lower case except for surnames which you should
put in capitals, as MIHALIK above. Makes for much easier-to-read text.

Thanks!!

Those of you who are interested in good map of Slovakia may wish to check
on this one. Some details follow, or check
the Slovak Institute website.

"In recent years, the research of surnames for Slovak immigrants coming to
America has created a need for a new service by the Slovak Institute.
Working with spellings of surnames and maps to identify old towns going back
to that period of the Dual Monarchy (1867 to 1918) is made easy."

This a large black and white map of Slovakia, designed and sold exclusively
by the Slovak Institute - www.slovakinstitute.com - at $10.00 per map plus
$2.00 for shipping and handling. If help is needed locating a town or a
village in Slovakia, provide details with the order and they will include
the information about the community.

Hi Bill:

I have one that was purchased by my Mother many years ago through Jednota.
It's quite large - approx 27" X 48". I had checked
with the Slovak Institute about a year ago. It wasn't available then, so I
was pleased to find it now. My copy is rather ragged
and I want to replace it. It isn't fancy but it does have all the villages
with their "old" names.

Hope this helps.

I have a copy of this map that I also purchased through Jednota. It was

The map is well done and has been very helpful in my research.

My Grandfather's name was Joseph, He was born Feb. 17 1869 in
Tienfenreighter, Austria. I can not find this town on any maps of Austria.
My Grandmother's name was Magdalena Samide. She was born Aug. 25 1868 in
Schanckdorfor or Schalkendorf.

Hi all,

One of the things I thought of doing while I've been ill is to
develop a database of the surnames we are researching. I need your
help to see if this will work :)

Right now, I am only doing one table in the DATABASE section for
surnames A through E -- no sense in doing all the work to set them
all up til we see if this works, or fix anything that doesn't work.

SO.... if you have any Slovak surnames A through E you can help
out... it does not matter if they are in the old country or US or
wherever, the database has a section for location.

I put in a sample one... you can see it there.. but here is how I
think it can work.

We will have tables covering all the alphabet eventually... a space
to list surname (and variations of spelling), location, your name and
your email address.

This is a list only, there is no space to include details.

If you have those surnames, please go and add your info and we'll see
how it works. I will check back in a few days and see what the
reaction is, and if we need to fix anything.

I'm wondering if we will have space to add years? Do you think that
is needed? If we have space enough, maybe we can add that.

If you have any suggestions, comments etc, please email me at
maurasminis@... If this works, I am hoping to have databases
covering A-Z, and depending on how much storage we use (yahoo can be
limited ) maybe also do location database too. I think many of us are
researching similar names and places but don't know it.

Let's see if this works.. hope so!

Maura

Passing this on to you from yahoo... FYI

Dear Yahoo! Groups Members,

Due to a recent outbreak of computer viruses being transmitted via
email messages on the internet, Yahoo! Groups is experiencing delays
in delivering group messages. To improve performance, and to help
reduce the spread of viruses to our users, Yahoo! Groups has had to
temporarily reject some messages.

Based on an advisory posted by a leading anti-virus company, Groups
will temporarily reject messages with the following subject lines:

test
hi
hello
Mail Delivery System
Mail Transaction Failed
Server Report
Status
Error
If you have attempted to post a message to Yahoo! Groups and have
received a rejection notice with a link to this page, your computer
may have been infected. If you are confident that your computer is
not infected but your message was rejected, please try posting a new
message with a subject line which is different than those listed
above.

We can assure you that this is only a temporary measure and hope to
restore message delivery to normal as soon as possible.

back, both maternal & paternal. I hope everyone adds their names to the
database. It sure will make being more organized with our research here.

To add your surname info to the database go to:

http://groups.yahoo.com/group/SLOVAK-ROOTS/

the main page for this group and on the left hand side you will see the
word "Database" just under members, sign in and click on Database and Add
Surname, then fill in form.

I hope everyone adds their info so we can get more organized,

Maura,

Your idea is a very good one. When you get to the letters, G, L, M, & P; I will
patiently await my opportunity to add my families Slovak surnames.
