Thanks for the info. Even though he used the names Andrew
Hricz/Hritz/Reese in America, I found his tombstone was marked Andro
Hric. Interesting that after using the Americanized name "Reese" for
many years, he was buried under the old name "Hric". One of the
villages you mentioned is probably the correct one. I hope to find the
county soon through other records in America.

What have you done to date? Have you located their villages in
Europe? Did you find them in the Ellis Island Database? Have you checked
vital statistics in Ramey. What church did they belong to?

I believe your best bet is to join the Smerek
list. http://www.topica.com/lists/smerek/

Most of the members are from or their ancestors are from the Ramey,
Houtzdale, Madera, Clearfield County area. You will find towns in Galicia
associated with surnames
at http://members.tripod.com/warholic/ . Although the names you are
interested may not be from Gailicia, many list members still live in the
area and may be familiar with your surnames.

The following is based on the "birds of a feather flock together"
hypothesis. My wife's grandparents emigrated from Gerlachov, Upper Hungary
to Morann, Pa, which is about two miles from Ramey. The Ellis Island data
base show Hircaks coming from Gaboltov which is about two or three miles
from Gerlachov. There is a Peter Hirc^ak listed for Gaboltov in the Slovak
online directory.

I found a Susanna Moros from Fricka, which is only about two miles up the
road from Gabaltov. It also shows a Suzana Morosz from Hosszuret, which is
now part of Bardejov and only a few miles from Gabaltov. I found one Moroz
listing for Bardejov in the online SK phone directory. Based on EIDB
records, I didn't find any of these names associated with Ramey.

I came across a Hric while researching my Karkos line. I have his
obituary if you want it. His name was John J. Hric, Jr. (wife was
Mary E. Gamrat) and he was the son of John J. and Susan Borcsak Hric
Sr. John Jr. was from the Lisbon Falls, Maine Slovak community, many
of whom came from the Parchovany/Trebisov areas.

At Mt. Calvary Cemetery in Lisbon Falls, where many Slovaks are
buried (there is another Slovak cemetery in town also), there is a
stone for a Joseph Hric, 1870-1933, who is the father of John J. Hric
Sr., who was born Jan. 13, 1892 and died Feb. 8, 1968. His wife,
Susan Borcsak was born July 15, 1895 and died Nov. 20, 1980.

You like to do your genealogical surname reserach the old way.

Sometimes in ship manifests Slovakia place names ending in -ica

Dear Sir/Madam,

My name is Leandro Vangel and I am writing from
Santa Rosa, La Pampa, Argentina. Though my surname is Vangel with `V´ in its
origin it was with `W´, because the surname of my grandfather was Wangel. His
name was Stefan Wangel and he came to Argentina around 1914 from Slovakia, from
a village or town called `Slanica´ into a region called `Zupra Povaska´.
                             Well, I`ve found a village called `Slanica´
(Slanická Osada) that today is near the towns of `Námestovo´ and `Trstena´ in
Central Slovakia. So, I would like to know if this is the same village from
where my grandfather came. I hope your answer. Thank you very much.

Mr Leandro Vangel

Thanks Leandro, Frank, Terry, John, and Bill for all your help. It
looks like there are several villages which could be the "Slanica" I am
seeking. Next week I will be checking many church and civil records in
Clearfield County Pennsylvania where they lived. Hopefully, one of
those records may give clearer information about the identity of their
home village in Europe. If not, I will have to go through the passenger
lists page-by-page of all ships arriving when they supposedly arrived in
New York, since they do not appear in the passenger lists index, or at
least in the index on the internet, which is really a transcription of a
transcription.

Like Bill said, I have a lot of homework to do.

Go for it with gusto! It's much better to have too many leads and too
much work than dead ends. Count your lucky stars that you're not from a
region whose records were destroyed, with no chance of recovery!
Good Luck and let us know how it goes! (You may need a stronger reading

Leandro,
There are many VANGEL still living in Slovakia. Go to
http://www.centroconsult.sk/Support/phone.html for instruction on how to
use the Slovakia phone book. Enter VANGEL and the area code '0'.
Remember, many people moved, especially since 1945, so don't be
surprised if the name is not in the village.

The Hungarians named it SZLANICA, and sometimes SZLANICZA.

Have you also looked at www.ellisisland.org for VANGEL from
Hungary/Slovakia? Examining these names might lead you to a village
too.,
I find:
89. Sandor Vangel Slanicz, Hungary 1907 2(US born) , traveled
with Vangel, Haelena F 26y , (born Dhla') destination Wisconson
113. Yan Vangel Szlanicza, Hungary 1908 42 , travelled with
Koloscak, Matus, age 16 from same village, Destination Carstadt Ontario.

After many years of research, I have identified all 16 of my mother's
great-great-grandparents, half or them Slovak and half of them Rusyn.
This current Hric research should not be as difficult, as I am just
trying to connect a person, known to be my grandpa's 3rd cousin, with my
direct ancestry. A very interesting exercise, none the less. My guess
is that the common ancestor will be from Trebisov, with Slanica an
intermediate step.

Subject: Re: [S-R] Town name Svinska

Mary Agnes Hric/Hricz/Hritz/Reese/Rees was born in Svinska on 19 Sep
1893 and immigrated on May 15, 1897.

Her father's declaration of intention in 1894 uses the name Hricz, and
his petition for naturalization in 1902 uses the name Reese, and Mary
Agnes indicates on her petition for naturalization that she immigrated
in 1897 under the name Mary Agnes Reese. Although it would be
surprising if she changed her name before she immigrated.

The odd thing is that Mary Agnes Reese is my grandpa John Tomko's 3rd
cousin, and all of my grandpa's ancestors, going back 3 generations
further in all lines, are from Trebisov, Zemplen County. So I would be
very surprised if Svinska is very far from Trebisov, although the child
or grandchild of the common Tomko/Hric ancestor could have moved to
anywhere before Mary Agnes was born.

I really appreciate your help with this.

Don't be surprised if they messed up the given name - I like the Mihaly

Slanica can be found on this 1910 Hungarian map of the Arva Varmegye or
Arva County:

http://lazarus.elte.hu/hun/maps/1910/arva.jpg

Look for Nameszto on the map and Szalnicza is just to the right. I believe
the Slovak word for county is Zupa. I think Arva Varmegye could be called
Oravska Zupa in Slovak.

! hola ! seńor Vangel

Wangel would be a German surname spelling.
In German the letter w is pron. v
Before WW I (1914-1918) there were Germans residing in Upper-Hungary
(Slovakia)
In Slovak and Hungarian the letter W appears only in foreign names.
Stephen (E) is Stefan in German, Slovak, Czech, and Polish.

z^upa means county (condado) in Slovak.

I am sorry to write that the village of Slanica no longer exists
because of the large dam built in 1954 flooding 5 villages.

But, what was your grandfather's religion ?
R.C. parish church records do exist for Slanica (1757-1895)

http://www.heartofeurope.co.uk/trav_attractions_slanicaa.htm

The Slovakia telephone directory does list a Vladimír Vangel under
Námestovo and a Jozef Vangel under Trstená, Slovakia.

If you mean a full-text, indexed search of all US Census data, there is
no public entity that offers it for free. As you note, ancestry has
made it available for a fee. No, you are not missing anything. In
fact, very, very few records of interest to genealogists have been
digitized (other than their index) with the major exception of

Hello all!
My name is Tina, and I am new to this listserve. I am researching the surname
RAAB form the village Hniezdne, Slovakia.

According to ship manifests, my grandmother Stefania (Stephanie) RAAB
came to the USA (ultimately to Philadelphia PA) through Ellis Island
in 1904, as did her siblings Maria (1900), Ferdinand (1905), Ludmilla
(1921) and Josef (1922). All list the village Gnesda (Guezda, Gniazda,
Gnezda etc.) in Hungary or Czechoslovakia (after 1920) as their place
of origin/birth. According to information I have read in this list-
serve and the TARG website, this is a Tatra area village now known as
Hniezdne which is currently in Slovakia.

On the ship manifests they identify Josef Raab as thier father
and the 1921 &1922 manifests list 188 Spisska Zupa, CZ. SL. as his
address. Family legend has it that their mother's name was Victoria (M???)

I have researched my grandmother and her siblings in the USA through
cencus documents, but I am hoping to begin research of them in Europe.
I am awaiting the 3 microfilm records from the LDS family history center
I have seen identified here and at the TARG website which apparently
have parrish records for this village.

I would appreciate any other advice on research in this village, or any
leads on this surname/family group in this region of Europe. Incidentally, I
cannot
find Ludmilla in any cencus, birth, death or marraige records (ancestry.com and
genealogy.com) in the US after her passage through Ellis Island, so any news of
her in America would
be welcome.

Also, any reccomendations on reading for background information on this
village/municipality/region, particulary leading up to and including
the time of their immigration would be appreciated.

I have appreciated your posts to date, and look forward to contributing.

    Many Thanks
  Tina Woods

Hello Tina and welcome to the Slovak Roots List.
although you mention that your family settled in Pennsylvania, i knew of a
Stephen Raab in Passaic New Jersey. we went to high school together (40 years
ago)
have you traced any family to Passaic? once Ludmilla married, she, of
course, would not have passed the name down but maybe another sibling or cousin
settled elsewhere and she followed.
good luck.

Hello Tina and welcome to the list. You're off to a fine start, and
lucky you have the film resources available. You'll make good progress.

Regarding "188 Spisska Zupa, CZ. SL" This is an incomplete address, the
village name is omitted. "Zupa" means "region" or district, or perhaps
county, depending on the source's intent. "Spisska Zupa" is literally
"Spis region". I suspect the "188" is a house number. It's quite
possible that he is from is also GNEZDA, given all the corroborating
evidence you've gathered thus far.

I can't tell you a much about the Tatra area as it's beyond my sphere of
research (Northeast/Zemplin county). However, I do have some general
reference material and am happy to extract what I have for you:
In the 1910 Magyar census, the village of GNEZDA, located in Szepes
county, Olubloi district, had 1080 residents comprised as follows:
39 Magyar (Hungarian)
736 Germans
286 Slovaks
Religion:
936 Roman Catholic
89 Greek Catholic
52 Jewish

It doesn't appear that the FHL has the 1869 census records for that
village available yet, which would have made for another good source.

For background info, you may want to consider researching neighboring
towns. If you have not already done so, go to the map server
http://mapy.atlas.sk and enter IHniezdne. Many times a collective
history of several regional villages is available (most often not on the
web and most often in a native language.) You'll probably get your
films before you dig out the historical info. You'll probably focus on
Stara Lubovna for historical information. As is often the case, larger
villages have greater influence on the minors.
A quick search of www.google.com (in case you haven't) reveals:

Subject: [S-R] RAAB form the village Hniezdne

Hello all!
My name is Tina, and I am new to this listserve. I am researching the
surname RAAB form the village Hniezdne, Slovakia.

On the ship manifests they identify Josef Raab as thier father and the
1921 &1922 manifests list 188 Spisska Zupa, CZ. SL. as his
address. Family legend has it that their mother's name was Victoria
(M???)

Incidentally, I cannot
find Ludmilla in any cencus, birth, death or marraige records
(ancestry.com and genealogy.com) in the US after her passage through
Ellis Island, so any news of her in America would be welcome.

Also, any reccomendations on reading for background information on this
village/municipality/region, particulary leading up to and including
the time of their immigration would be appreciated.

I have appreciated your posts to date, and look forward to contributing.

    Many Thanks
  Tina Woods

Tina,

The small town of Kniesen was founded in 1286 by Germans as Knysen. The ethnic
German population dwindled during the long mortgage to Poland (together with
Alt-Lublau and Pudlein--sorry, I don't know the Slovak names off-hand), but in
1930, of 1,042 inhabitants, 566 still were German in the Census. I described the
history of the Carpathian Germans in http://www.geocities.com/ycrtmr/eisdorf.htm

Two old Knieseners have reminisced about their hometown before the end of the
local German population in 1945-47, Rudolf Goellner in the monthly Karpatenpost
July 1956, p. 1-2, and Wilhelm Nigriny in that of Sept. 1997, p. 5. In the
monthly Karpatenblatt there is an article in the issue of April 2000. I can send
you a copy of these if desired, but the April 2000 one is also on the Internet
at
http://www.geocities.com/karpatenblatt/April7.html.

Other sources for Carpathian German ancestry are:
http://www.karpatendeutsche.de/

http://www.genealogienetz.de/reg/ESE/slovak-d.html

In such small cities/villages, many people were related in one way or the other
(in my case, in Eisdorf/Zakovce, and Zipser Bela/Spisska Bela), I find out that
after a few generations, I seem to have the same ancestors over and over again,
with marriages among 2nd and 3rd cousins quite frequent among Lutherans. I
corresponded in 2002 with a Ginny Schulze whose ancestors came to the US from
Kniesen in the 1890s, and if you are interested could put you in touch with her.

Sincerely

Thomas Reimer

ahoj Tina

Hniezdne is located 179 miles ENE of Bratislava near okres Stará
L'ubovn^a, Slovakia.
Before the term z^upa (county) was discontinued in Slovakia in
1923, Hniezdne was located in Spis^ská (grammatical gender form
of Spis^) county.

Interesting region.
Germans, Slovaks, Rusyns, Croatians, Hungarians, and Poles.
Don't know which group settled here first in 12th, 14th, and 16th
centuries.

Raab was a German surname.
There are 2,600+ surnames Raab listed in gedcom files.

The Slovakia telephone directory lists a Emil and Karol Raab under
Hniezdne and a Raab under Stará L'ubovn^a.

The LDS-Mormons filmed the R.C. parish church records (1624-1904) for
Gn^azdá (also spelled Hniezdne), Slovensko, Czechoslovakia, formerly
known as Gnézda, Szepes megye (county), Hungary.
Text in Latin, Hungarian and Slovak.

My husband's maternal grandparents came from the Spisska Nova Ves
area. His grandfather Mahal Geletko was born October 22, 1852, in
Hnilcik.

We went to Hnilcik in June and took pictures:
http://homepage.mac.com/rskapura1/hnilcik/index.html

I'd like to hear from anyone with Lesko, Torisky, or Geletko
relatives from this area.
