Curt,
I'm only reacting to what you wrote.

I get the message that it is up to the overworked Presov archivists to
eventually give licence to the LDS (who are paying for this), to place
their whole region's census archive for 1869 on-line at once, after
successful, policy inspired non-political negotiations with the Hungarian
archivists. This is of course after they check the records that are in
existence in at least 2 public archives already and then re-catalogue it.
Sounds like a perfectly good bureaucracy.

That's about it.

That's not quite correct. SOME of the ZEMPLEN Megye films are available online.
Because my particular interest is Dubravka, which is not online, I used it as an
example in my query to LDS.

I have not surveyed the online films to determine what proportion is currently
online. Nor have I checked other counties for completeness of online listings.

John,
That's what I thought too, that there are already Zemplen records online
and Dubravka missed out for some reason.
Maybe an email to the Presov archive requesting them to allow the LDS to
put it online might be a strategy. The LDS and Curt have suggested that the
archive custodians have restricted access. I think it is your right to ask
why.
I'm waiting for Pozsony megye to come online, although I would want the
whole of the pre-Trianon territories in a perfect world, fully and
accurately indexed :) I haven't yet started on my mother's side and they
stretch from Romania to the Ukraine. Maybe in another lifetime.

In a marriage record for Mihaly Sztricsko, there is a village name that I can't
figure out. It would seem that father Mihaly came from OSCVAI (or similar). The
marriage is in Senne, Ung Megye, just south of Michalovce, 3 km from Palin.

Where was the elder Mihaly SZTRICSKO from? See entry #15.

Could it be Osztro, which is in Ung Megye also?

John,
It looks to me as Ocsvar, later it was called Olcvar, and today known as
Koicke Oany. [kosicke olsany, without the diacritics] The village is not too
far away, just east of Kosice.

It is probably the best guess, albeit a considerable distance for someone to
travel in those early days. Perhaps the church records are available to help
solve the mystery.

Dear John:

Sometimes, there can be a distance greater than a few villages away. In
my own genealogical research, it took my a long while to trace my
grandmother's village of origin because (1) the name of the village was in a
different form and did not appear to match any village names that I was familiar
with; and (2) I was looking only at villages in a close in proximity to the
village where she lived when she was married. When I did find her village
of origin, the information matched the information that I had about my
grandmother (and her siblings, etc.), and also matched the stories that my
father had relayed to me about his mother growing up in the Tatra Mountains.
One's occupation may play a role in the distance.

You may have already done it, but just in case, I would recommend that you
look through additional pages in the church records to see if you might be
able to better decipher the handwriting.

I hope that everything else is going well for you, my friend, and wish you
and your family a Happy, Healthy and Prosperous New Year!

Best regards,

David

I agree that proximity is usually a good indicator -- but not always. I have
checked the RC church records for Kosicke Olsany for 10 years prior to the
estimated year of birth and found no relevant birth record.

Perhaps this mystery will remain unsolved.

Bill did a marvelous job in keeping this site going after we lost contact with
Maura Petzolt (her absence has also been felt on the SHAMROCK list she started
on Rootsweb).

Ron and I have taken a more active roll over the past year. Now Bill has moved
on to other interests and is no longer a moderator for this list.

We are looking for one more person to step up and assist us in moderating this
site.

Please privately e-mail Ron or me if you are interested.

Thank you.

Folks,

Some time back we asked for volunteers to join Ron and I
in moderating S-R and to assure continuation of the Forum.  We received 5 very
well qualified offers to help us and faced the tough
decision as to who to have join us in moderating this forum.  We choose
to keep the moderators at a small number so coordination remains easy
and we are not so large that we become our own private group.

Carl Kotlarchik is now the latest to join us and is moderating activity and spam
along with Ron and I.

This
is a good time to remember, with thanks, Maura Petzolt who created this
group and Bill Tarkulich who established moderator control once Maura
vanished.

Do you expect the spam to increase now that we have a new Moderator?

Thanks to all of you, Ron, Joe, and Carl, for all the work you do, and to Bill
and Maura as well. I think everyone will agree with me that your time and
effort is very much appreciated.

Frank, I think Stephen was just welcoming Carl to his new duties, which include
not only the thanks and gratitude of the forum members, but also the task of
dealing with spam.

I thought your using the word "glory" was clever;....

Slav meaning glorious.

So.....spam could also mean...Slavic Pursuit of Additional Moderator.

I guess it was a lost attempt at a joke since part of the description in
the email was "...join us and is moderating activity and
spam along with Ron and I"

Hello,

This may be my clue to a family mystery. I have done my rough dictionary
translation of entry 15, the comment section. It is the birth record of one of
my great grandmother's children. Could this possibly an anulment?

Mary

As far as I understand the last column means :

Anna Zahoransky's husband, Johannes Pablatura, of account op an homicide carried
out in 1880 , turned to be incarcerated, but the wife embraced a new life in an
other place.Recently, at the beginning of the this year, she left Miskol, being
already pregnant and returnet to Dobscha.

I hope this will help you.

Jacques
