In a private message,I replied to the original poster of message#34439, jtgen96.

Alexander Kozub was indeed a Cantor at St.John's in Perth Amboy and he is buried
there too. There were no records from the Church of him ever becoming a priest
as the sender adamately insisted....

jtgen96 was unable to locate Alexander because he was still using his Magyar
name "Sandor"

Another member,(Maxine?) Messaged me after reading the post herself asking if I
would be so kind as to help her with her search within the same Parish.

Maxine seems to be having difficulties navigating Slovak-Roots and sending
E-Mail from the message list...

So,should either of the two members interested in St.John's happen to be viewing
this thread, your answers are No and No and you are welcome.

I believe in reciprocating, helping members with their queries if I can be of any
help whatsoever...many have helped me along the way in my own reseach.

Follow up though is a courtesy and should be mentioned in the groups
guidelines...I have not heard back from eithe member.

WooHoo! I found him and place of birth!

As Sandor MORAVKO appeared to disappear from records, I kept searching and
found an Alexander MORAFKO born at the same estimated year in the 1915
census, confirmed in the 1925 census and then in the 1919 Declaration of
Intention -Naturalization record - same height, eye colour etc as the ship
manifest.
Not only did he register for WW1 draft, but also WW2 as well.
He had 3 girls, no sons and so the name died with him. His wife was 10
years younger.

One of my earlier guesses was Konstrvrta which looked peculiarly like
Štvrtok or Thursday.
He considered himself as a Slovak and when asked for his place of birth, he
first said stvrtok, thought again and changed it to the Hungarian
Csutortok, but the actual village was called Vagcsutortok at the time.
So I bet it was overwritten because of this.
Štvrtok is a small village (pop 350) between Nove Mesto Nad Vahom and
Trencin along the main route. Nove Mesto Nad Vahom has had a concentration
of Moravkos over the years.
It's also a confirmation for me that the alteration of the V to an F is
common (my last name is Marafko from an earlier line of Moravkos) and
happened in Serbia, Slovakia and Hungary-Romania.

Probably was worth the $35 monthly Ancestry charge.

Hi all

I'm looking on information on the wars fought between 1800-1900 a newly found
source has told me that my great great grand parents were killed in a war in
hungary but she couldnt remember what one, forgive me but I just dont know the
history of the place like I do Scotland. I finally found a relative that will
talk to me about the Ondo family(may even be spelled Ondov before Ellis Island)
she may have Alzheimers and talking to her you only get half of your questions
answered but its still more then what I had.

Hungary was a big place before 1918. Any idea where the old folks cam from?
Their death records are likely in the church books. ONDO was a common name in
the area in and around Michalovce and Kosice.

In the appendices at the end of the article, you will find a list of all the
wars that Austria-Hungary fought in between 1740 and 1918. Do you know the year
in which your great-great grandfather was born? If so, look for a war that took
place when he was between 20 and 24.

Thanks very much for the link Johnqadam!
After pouring over the records for Stvrtok, I found nothing.
Not giving up, I used the Familysearch database in all different manners
and ways and came up with (eventually) Sandor Moravek in a place called
Plavecký Štvrtok.
Turns out that even he did not remember his birthdate exactly. It was the
18th of Dec 1876 instead of the 8th Dec 1877. The ship manifest was right.
Also Plavecký Štvrtok was known as Detrekőcsütörtök which makes a huge
amount of sense as it very closely resembles the handwritten place of birth
in the ship's manifest in 1909 - Yet by 1919 when he applied for
Naturalization, he shortened it to Csutortok and forgot his birthdate.
Detrekőcsütörtök is very much closer to hometown as well.

He was the illegitimate son of Carolina Moravek from Malaczka, Close to the
Austrian border, along the way from Bratislava to Kuty. No wonder he spoke
German.

For me, the MORAVEK-MORAVKO-MORAFKO transformation answers certain
questions that I asked of this group a while ago.
Simply, MORAVEK appears to be the Czech (and possibly Slovak version) of
the Moravko name. Somehow, his mother called herself or was named Moravek,
yet he called himself Moravko. Why? Why not stay with the name Moravek???
An answer to this could be that the family name was Moravko (possible from
Moravke - a Hungarian diminuitive form for Moravia and the name of a
tributary of the Morava river).

I had hoped that there was no connection between Moravek and Moravko as far
as genealogy is concerned. Now I am not so sure. It makes my work much
harder.

Hi,

not trying to be a hater but probably her parents were thrown back to Germany
after WWII. This is common knowledge the Slovaks in disgust of the holocaust
(real or not) evicted the German colonist out of the country. Not sure when
Nimitz brought to Texas to join other German farmers but very often I see
Germans that claim ancestry in SR and CZ Rep. here in Texas. Germans colonist
were always subject to suspicion. Since they were sent back to a particular
village in Germany I would look there as well. Bingen, Germany.

I have put a file up in 'Leporis' files that at the top of the list is "#5
Andreas_Leporis". I see that on #34 is a Vietoris also. The Vietoris is well
known to me as a family alliance with the Leporis from apparently 1611 (during
reformation) through at least the late 1700's. (see Joseph Drenko / Kunova
Teplica..), also partially uploaded in my file list. Here is the question! How
in the world am I going to track all the Evangelical (Lutheran) pastors in my
family from Liptov to Kunova Templica? Does the Hungarian Reformed Church hold
such records? My main partner in this quest is actually a Vietoris descendant
whose gggrandpa was god son to Leporis (Advocate) in Kosice. What can I say,
Lutheran pastors moved a lot obviously. Also I invite you all to look for your
family's names and possible ancestors (probably would be Lutheran) in these very
old documents I managed to score for our viewing pleasure. In following
historical documents I have come to some fantastic realizations in my own
ancestry which make for an interesting story of some sort.. In any case I seem
to be so close yet so far in joining the dots as my family was very duplicitous
in their religious believes ie: communion in both kinds etc. (topic for SK world
probably). The transition of religion from Catholic to Lutheran is probably the
most interesting story yet considering the players involved. What's confusing me
even more is Gasper Leporis(Ucitel/teacher)and his brother(s) moving to
Vojvodina (NW of Novi Sad, old Jugoslavia). Linking him to Revuca was simple
enough but still searching concrete data. As Curt and I have discussed before
Revuca Evangelical church data was mostly destroyed by fire. However, enough was
retained for Joseph Drenko to mention my ancestors there. So what do I do? Too
long of post? I know exactly where this is all leading for the family as
Siebacher's and the Hungarians have left solid clues for me in their armorial
records however I still have too many gaps to present in essay what I've found.
I'd appreciate any feed back no matter what.

Cynthia,

"not trying to be a hater but probably her parents were thrown back to

In 1929, the first Slovak Republic was founded.  The first Prime Minister was
Monsignor Jozef Tiso:
  http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Slovak_Republic_%281939%E2%80%931945%29

I have never heard of German colonists arriving in Slovakia nor of evictions of
"German colonists" during WWII. There were historic towns colonized by Germans,
Hungarian and Rusin Towns.

From where did you get information on this??

I do know that Czechoslovakia evicted Germans from Sudetenland but this was long
before WWII.

I do know many people who made errors in immigration records because Records in
Ellis Island listed the immigrants arriving before the fall of the Austria
Hungary monarchy, were listed as German, (Austrian), or Hungarian.  Our Slovak
ancestors were often , (at least), bi-lingual, (Slovak, Hungarian or German),
and very often tri-lingual, (All three).

In your message following this, are you referring to the Reformation and
Counter-Reformation??

I do not know if you have contacted people there but  here is the site for the
Lutheran University in Bratislava:

This is my deceased husband's grandfather. There are no living relatives
available to ask where exactly they came from but I have found some information
on his WW1 Draft Registration.

Please view this at my web page: http://www.breny.com/pics/ww1_1.jpg

It looks like Nutsnois Zenplinski, Austria to me. On the 1910 US Census he is
living with a lot of families that all say they are from Austria and they
actually have Russian as the language they speak. The last name is currently
Miklish, but I've seen lots of variations on that such as Micklish, Miklus,
Micklos, Miklos. Peter was born in 1892 and the earliest I find him in the US
is the 1910 Census with his parents and siblings.

I'm trying to research this for my daughter.

Any help is apprecated.

Vilo,

Thanks for responding, but I feel I must make a few important corrections before
this topic goes too far. Everyone here needs to do a bit of basic homework,
because this history is too complicated, too political and too emotional to be
discussed profitably at any great length on this Genealogical forum.

To repeat, questioners and answering people, you owe it to yourselves and the
rest of us to do some basic reading. There is so much propaganda on this topic
that Wikipedia may well be as accurate as anything else you find on the web -
there is a lot of nonsense and inflammatory writing out there, and forums out
there for people who like to argue history.

Corrections:
The first Slovak Republic was set up in 1939, with Tiso as president. Google
First Slovak Republic.

German colonists were invited into the country in the 1200's to help rebuild and
repopulate after the devastation of the Mongol / Tatar invasions of 1242. There
was another wave, perhaps in the 1400's.

Germans were kicked out of CzechoSlovakia in 1945 and after WW II. Google Benes
Decrees; Carpathian Germans; Zips Germans; german expulsion.

Josef Tiso: google his name to find out if he was premier, prime minister or
president 1939 - 1945. That was a very controversial time and there are strong
opinions about him and his government.

Another topic to google is 'holocaust in Slovakia' for another part of history
with several perspectives. I suspect the Germans were kicked out more for their
5th Column activities in WW II and not over indignation at the Jewish Holocaust.

So on with the homework! When you come back to the forum with this topic, try
to keep it as close to genealogical as possible. There are many controversial
stories to be learned above, and this is NOT the forum to hash these out!

Hallo Vilo,

I think you have some typos in your e-mail.

1. The first Slovak Republic was founded in 1939 and not 1929.

2. The expulsion of Germans form Czechoslovakia was after the WWII in 1945. You
can read about it
http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Expulsion_of_Germans_after_World_War_II#Czechoslova\
kia

And

http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Flight_and_expulsion_of_Germans_from_Czechoslovakia\
_during_and_after_World_War_II

I am not sure about the „Point of view“ of this articles, the point of view
form German writers is definitively diffrent than of Czech writers.

There were expulsed also Germans from Slovakia, mostly is talking only about
germans frome Sudetenland. It is easy to understand why – in Sudetenland there
were about 3.000.000 Germans, in whole Slovakia about 150.000.

Cynthia,

"not trying to be a hater but probably her parents were thrown back to
Germany after WWII. This is common knowledge the Slovaks in disgust of
the holocaust (real or not) evicted the German colonists out of the
country."

Hi,

not trying to be a hater but probably her parents were thrown back to Germany
after WWII. This is common knowledge the Slovaks in disgust of the holocaust
(real or not) evicted the German colonist out of the country. Not sure when
Nimitz brought to Texas to join other German farmers but very often I see

There are many controversial
stories to be learned above, and this is NOT the forum to hash these out!

v. CN † King Leopold I, in AD 1710 one-and nobility. crest letter (in union
with the race Leporisz) also (in the clubs with the tribe of Leporisz), which in
1711 was Trentschiner ctte publicirt - is how Google Translate did your German
notation.

Trentschiner is Trencsén county (in Latin: comitatus
Trentsiniensis/Trenchiniensis, in Hungarian Trencsén (vár) megye, in Slovak
Trenčiansky komitát/ Trenčianska stolica/ Trenčianska župa, German:
Trentschiner Gespanschaft/Komitat) is the name of a historic administrative
county (comitatus) of the Kingdom of Hungary. Its territory is presently in
western Slovakia.

There is a state archive in Trencin, but it is pretty limited in its holdings.
The Slovak National Archive in Bratislava would be a better one to try and see
if they have the document you are looking for.

There is a problem with the notation – King Leopold I died in 1705, so how he
could be doing something in 1710 is interesting.
