I'm new to the group. The families I am researching are: JURIGA,
POLLAK, MEGELA & HLATKI(HLATKY,HLADKI,HLADKY)
I have about 20+ letters that were written to my Grandmother. I am
guessing they were written in Slovak. Could anyone recommend a web
site or a book that would help me in the translation of these
letters. Keep in mind I do not speak the language at all!!! Any help

Don't know your surnames.

How are you ?        English

Wie geht es Ihnen ?  German

Hogy Van ?           Hungarian

Ako sa más^ ?        Slovak

Jak se máte ?        Czech

Jak sie pan miewa ?  Polish

Some Web sites do foreign language translations.
You are asking a great deal of some one to translate 20 + letters
for you !

If you don't know the Slovak language, a book won't be of much help.
Not because of the word meanings , but because of  need for knowledge
of grammatical rules using words which is required in any language.

There is a Radimov (Sv) Radimó (H) locate 40 miles north
of Bratislava, Slovakia.
Located close to current Czech border between Gleby and Holic^
in the Senica area of NW Slovakia.

A Radimov is also located 55 miles south of Prague (Praha)
Czech Republic.

The Slovakia telephone directory lists 1 surname Juriga under
Radimov and 1 surname Pollák under Radimov.
Directory also lists 4 surname Hladky' under Senica.
And it lists 6 surname Juriga under the Senica area.

The surname Hladky is also found in the Czech Republic.
Hladky' means smooth in both Czech and Slovak.
Probably 400-500 surname Hladky bearers just in the U.S.

No.  The distance from the capital Bratislava to Pres^ov is 158 miles and
to Poprad 200 miles.  The two cities Pres^ov and Poprad were and currently
are I believe in different counties.

The Shudicks were Roman Catholic in Slovakia.  I'll try to find the
four Shudick siblings in Ohradzany (one of the brothers was the
father of John Shudick Sr. and one of the sisters was the mother of
my grandfather Andy Tkach Klich).  These four Shudicks were born
probably between 1858 and 1875.  If the records are in good order, I
should find the parents and the grandparents of the four Shudick
siblings. I know that one of the Shudick siblings in Ohradzany--who
was an aunt of both your grandfather and my grandfather--was a
seamstress who remained single.  She had some health problem and
walked with a limp.  The lady at the Morman Research Center said that
the microfilms I ordered should come in within 2-4 weeks.  I'll keep
you posted.

Shudick would be the post-emigration surname spelling.
Some emigrants changes names after arrival in the U.S.

You want S^udik spelled with the Slovak diacritic letter S^ = Sh.

The Slovakia telephone directory lists 3 surname S^udik under
Humenné.
Directory also lists 4 surnames S^udik under Ohradzany (Sv)
formerly Göröginye (H)

I am looking for help with getting documents from Czech. My great
great grandfather Adam HEINDL came over from Bohemia through Ellis
Island. At that time they changed the spelling to HEINDEL. He moved
to the Saginaw are of Michigan. Some of his children spelled it with
the extra 'E' and some did not. Also, I know that my grandmothers
father, John PITOUR was from Prague, Czech, but I have no further
info about it, except that he was born in 1880. This info is per his
death certificate from the saginaw, MI area.
Any idea how to find out where in Bohemia someone is from if that is
the only info you have? Any help would be greatly appreciated.

Probably 600-900 surname Heindel bearers just in the U.S.
The surnames are probably of German ethnicity *
German and Czech languages were both used in former Czech-Bohemia.

I do not know what year he came over. How can you find out if there are
naturalization papers for someone? I just know that he came through Ellis
Island because he complained alot to my grandma about how horrible a trip it
was on a cattle boat to there.
I have weeded out many of the Heindl's in my line with my website, though I
have met and connected many of the others as well.
I haven't got anywhere with the Pitour side. All that I have is John's Death
Certificate. He was married twice and had kids with both, so it's very hard
to know if the person who filled out the info on the death cert knew what
they were talking about. I would love to be able to get a copy of his birth
certificate or immigration/naturalization info so that I could go further
with his family line.

Once you know the time-frame for naturalization (i.e., between 1910 and 1920),
you can contact the NARA for that region via email and ask them to search for
the papers. If they find them, they will let you know and tell you to send $10
for copies. I got my grandfather's papers out of the Philadelphia NARA in 11
days from the date of my email!

Even if he was not naturalized, you can search the soundex index of passenger
arrivals -- probably starting with NYC. The year of entry listed on the Census
will help with this.

I've been going throught the Greek Catholic parish records for the
towns of Olejnikov, Lutina, and Hanigovce, in Saris county.  I found
my grandfather's confirmation when he was about age 2 1/2 in the
christening lists in 1888. His birth is listed as illegitimate and
there is a notation that he was born in America with his birth date.
My great-grandparents are listed as his parents, although it does not
say, "his wife" after my great-grandmother's name as most of the
other entries do.  I'm wondering why my grandfather is listed is
illegimate.  Were my great-grandparents not married yet at the time
of his birth?  That is the obvious explanation.  I also thought there
could be other reasons though such as not being married in the
church, being married in America, or my grandfather not being
baptized previously. My grandfather was born in PA and the family
apparently moved back to Slovakia, eventually coming back to the U.S.
permanently.  A second child was born in Slovakia (1892) and my great-
grandparents are listed as his parents with the birth listed as
legitimate. I am hoping someone out there is more familiar than me

and respect.  There were children in my family that were born in slovakia but
were born before the marriage took place.  The natural father had to go to the
church and make a public declaration that the children were his and that he
accepted them as legal children after the marriage but before they were
considered "legitimate".

While checking civil birth records in Malcov, SK, I was told that the first
child of one of the families I was searching for was born 2 years before
her parent's marriage.  She assured me that the father had acknowledged the
child as his (I believe I was assured just in case I might find the news
disturbing), which appears to agree with your statement.  Even though this
acknowledgement took place, the official document they gave me lists the
mother and child's name but has the word " neuvedeny' " in the father's
area.  I believe that translates as "unaware" but not illegitimate.  I was
not able to see the actual listing in the register.  The family was Greek
Catholic but the records were not available on microfilm because the
microfilm records for their village did not go beyond 1895.

The G.C. parish records for Lutina were written in
Latin, Hungarian, and Ruthenian.

English            Hungarian
legitimate         törvényes
illegitimate child törvénytelen gyerek

English            Latin
legitimate         legitimatus
illegitimate       illegitmus

Some parish churches kept duplicate copies of the records.
Druhopisy (i.e. second writing) was a duplicate copy  known
as the bishop's copy'.
So a duplicate of the original record may have been
sent elsewhere.
Some years have both parish records and "bishop's copies".
Other years have only "bishop's copies", others only the parish
registers.

The Krstení (christenings) for Lutina (Litinye) 1860-1895 were
Druhopisy.

What was the surname parent's religion listed as ?

Why I ask is that in cases of 'mixed marriages', G.C, priests were
known to tell the couples they had not been actually married
and such couples sometimes later remarried and even rebaptized their
children ?
