Is there a map of Slovakia on the net with the county, i.e., Saris, Spis,
etc., lines drawn in? If so what is the address (URL).

Thanks.

Thanks Andy. Great province maps. Since Saros is not at the end of the table
of provinces located at the site below, I almost missed the map at the bottom
of the table. This is an outline map of Hungary, which shows all the
provinces.

As near as I can tell, there used to be two Kremnickas: one is now Stara
Kremnicka, and is south of the town of Kremnica, while the other was
just south of Banska Bystrica and is now part of that town.

Kremnicke Bane was a village north of Kremnica, today it's part of the
town.

You're right, Bansko-Bystricky is the adjective referring to the town of
Banska Bystrica.

Andrea, you are so sweet!

Goral comes from Polish, referring to a highlander (vrchar in Slovak).
It's actually pronounced "gural" - the o has an accent mark over it in
Polish, but Slovak drops the accent mark, so in literary Slovak it's
usually pronounced goral, but villagers still say gural. From what I've
read, some settlers were already there during the 11th/12th centuries,
when the Polish/Hungarian border was farther south - the upper reaches
of the Hornad and Vah rivers. After the border had shifted north, some
skipped over the border to flee oppressive feudal conditions in Poland,
or because there were in trouble with the law. Probably the majority
though came into the area with the Wallachian migrations of the 15th to
17th centuries. They've preserved their Polish dialect in compact areas
of northern Spis and Orava, and in island villages here and there where
they're a majority of the population (like in Huty, Male/Velke Borove,
Liptovska Teplicka, Liptovska Luzna or Lom nad Rimavicou), but in island
villages where they were a minority early in this century (like in
Liptovska Osada, Pohorela, or Polomka) they've assimilated to Slovak and
disappeared as a distinct group.

Dear Greg,

Thanks for the fascinating information. I would have suspected some sort of
linguistic missing links between Slovak and Polish up until recent times,
meaning I suppose WWII.

Are you familiar with the folk group Oravan? I wonder if some of their
music on the audiotape that Greg Kopchak sells is goral music. Wierd pipes
and so on. Did you notice that another lister found someone named Wanigura
as a boarder in her ancestor's home around 1920?

Maybe another Vangor variant. Julie Michutka, who posted about it, may be
able to tell me more.

Yes, the Oravan group plays a mix of Slovak village music from central
and southern Orava, and goral music from northern Orava, as well as
music from other regions of Slovakia. Quite a talented bunch!

I just posted Greg Kopchak to ask him if he knew any of the names of the
songs, other than Tancuj, Tancuj -- he says not. I wonder if I can find
them to write a note and ask.

Am new to the world of Slovak Roots.
Searching for information on the village of Slatvina and for information on
relatives of Andrew Gredesky (Andras Gredecky was his name on the immigration
records). He entered the US in 1902, went to Pennsylvania. His birthplace
was listed as Slatvina, Austria-Hungary.
Further seekings--Are the Rusyni usually Byzantine Catholic, or can they
be Russian Orthodox? Andrew married Mary Rizsak who, I assume was born in
Ungvara (present day Uzhorod [?]) since her parents were married in Ungvara
and she attended the Russ. Ortho church in this country. We are also
searching for info on the Rizsaks. Would like to settle as to whether or not
they are Slovaks, Rusyni, Ukrainians, or Belorussians.

Hello everyone! I'm researching the DROTAR and STANKO surnames out of
Austria-Hungary. My grandfather was Joseph Albert DROTAR and my grandmother
was born Julie Ann STANKO but became DROTAR. They came to the US as children
in the early years of this century. Joseph was born Feb. 4, 1907 and died in
1985, Julie was born Dec. 18, 1909 and died in 1986.

They came from a village called RUDNO, and I have no idea where this village
is now. They came to Rock Springs, Wyoming, then to Colorado. I believe they
entered the country through a Washington State port, possibly in Tacoma.

Both came from very large families with lots of siblings, brothers on my
grandfather's side, sisters on my grandmother's side.

They spoke Slovak and English, and were Roman Catholics. The belief that my
grandfather at least entered the US through Tacoma comes from my mother, who
told me once that he'd always had a soft spot for Washington State because
of this.

The village--I have little to go on here other than the name "Rudno,
Austria-Hungary." My mother told me it's written this way on my
grandmother's birth certificate, which I have yet to be able to convince her
to show me.

They were married in either the late 20s or early 30s, and had 2 children.
Their oldest daughter died very young. Their younger daughter is my mother,
Mardell Rose DROTAR. They lived all of their married lives in either
Colorado or Wyoming (Arvada, CO/Ramah, CO/Denver, CO and Rock Springs, WY)

Any and all help and advice will be appreciated. :)

Thanks!

Try: http://www.jewishgen.org/ShtetlSeeker/loctown.htm Fill in the name of
the town and select Slovakia. It's about 90 miles from Bratislava if that is
the correct spelling. Other options are given.

Seeking information on my Great Grandfather Michael Kislan. According to
his social security application, he was born in Kelsco, Czechoslovakia.
The writing isn't clear on the application, but the spelling of the town is
hard to read. He was born January 8, 1871 to Andrew Kislan and Mary Diehl.
Michael came to Pennsylvania prior to 1892. His first son was born in
Eckley, Pennsylvania in 1892. Michaels wife's name was Mary Dillon. I do
not know if he married her in the old country for if he met and married her
in Pennsylvania.  Michael diedon January 25, 1945.  He had 4 children;
Joseph William b. Mar. 13, 1892, Mary, dob unknown, Michael b. Feb 25, 1895
and my Grandfather, John Albert b. Oct. 6, 1897.

My father doesn't think Zedo, (this is what they called Michael), was
naturalized. Zedo was a coalminer as well as my grandfather.

Zedo died from a heart attack and we believe cancer. Would like to know if
the town of Kelsco is the correct spelling and if the name Kislan rings a
bell with anyone.

Thanks,

Diana Toohey (Kislan)

Tacoma, although few traces of it remain. There is, or was, a Slovak
Catholic parish, for example. I have never found a Slovak heritage society
there, and I can't imagine that one would exist without someone on the Web
knowing about it. Guess I'll have to start one. :-)

Andrea--Thank you so much for this information! It gives me more information
than I had when I woke up, that's certain! I really appreciate this, and I'm
going to see what I can track down. Naturally, when I lived in Washington
(Bellingham) I didn't have much interest in genealogy. Now that I live half
the country away I've developed a passion! LOL.

Thanks again,

Salena :)

Dear listmembers,

Here it is Friday the 13th of August... which is unbelievable to me as I
don't really remember most of this past week. I have been extremely ill
with pneumonia, and Andrea Vangor has been aware of the situation and
has "watched" over things for me.

When I left things in Andrea's hands because I knew I could not handle
things, we had 103 or so listmembers, and today we have 120, so new
people have joined. I didn't want to send a message to the list about
my illness before, and thankfully I am better, but have been diagnosed
with an uncommon form of pneumonia, atypical mycoplasma pneumonia, which
has a long recovery period. I'll spare you the gory details, but I am
probably only operating at 60%. However, I am now able to come to the
computer once and day and monitor things, which is an improvement. I am
still under the care of a Pulmonary Specialist, and am not sure if I
will be able to start the new school year on 26 Aug.

I hope that you have all been helping each other as usual.... probably
you didn't even notice I was "gone" <g> I did want to explain things,
in case there were situations that did not get answers, or the new
people didn't understand how things work on this list.

So, altho you may not have realized I was "gone", I"m back, but nowhere
near full speed.
It will be a big help to me, and to each other, if you can continue to
help each other, and remember that lots of good basic information is on
my Helpful Hints page.

Thanks in advance for your cooperation!
