Family History Centers can get your microfiche and help you out.  You would
need to know your villages first.

NOT on line anywhere.

Film copies at your nearest LDS Family History Center, if they have been
indexed. The INDEX is on line for film numbers.

I have most of it saved on my computer and have had it for years, I just did a
internet search and found it.

Unfortunately there is nothing on the bottom of the pages to show the website it
was on. If nobody has a link to it, just try a Google search and I hope you
find it

What I have is the Supplemental 1869 hungarian Census for Csircs, Saros Megye,
Hungaria, translated & compiled by Mary Maddock ( I may be missing part but I
have a lot of pages) I also have the List of familes in the 1969 Hungarian
Census and Part of Supplemented 1869 Census

In fact I am working out of it tonight adding people to my ancestry.com tree. My
families are Plavcsan (Plavtsan) Havrilla, Kovalyak, Hrabtsak, Varhola and

Several months ago I asked for info about my grandfather, Joseph Gajarsky
(Gayarsky) from Velke Kostolany who came to US in 1907. I have since learned
that his father was Izidore - immigration records indicate that he lived in Magy
Roszsalang in 1902. Does anyone know where that would be? Is the spelling
correct? Mary Dubovsky is listed as his wife on Joseph's marriage certificatae.
Anyone have any info on these people. I have not searched FHL yet - I got
sidetracked on the other half of my lineage.

Hi,
I need some advice or help in deciding on software to do my family tree. I had
it all on my Mac computer which had Reunion as the software.
I see that Legacy Family Tree is a free download, I think. Also I have looked
into Roots Magic and it has a free one and one to buy for $29.95 which is a good
price.
Is Family Tree Maker another one and what is this cost?
Does anyone have any of these please comment?
Thanks Julianna

Julianna,
Why would you switch from Reunion?
If you are going to a PC then Legacy works well.
The free download is not complete, you need to pay for the rest of it, but
it is worth it.
I think the free one is limited to how many and how much you can do with
it.
I use both Mac and PC.
The new Legacy 7.5 (due out February, I hope) will interface with the
Family History Pilot site.
7.5 will be a free upgrade for 7.0 users.

Judy,
I looked at the immigration record of Izidor. The person making the
transcription clearly could not read the handwriting and didn't try very hard.
It looks to me like Nagy Kostolany, which would make sense, since you think his
son was from from Old Kostolany. Did you look at the manuscript or just take
the transcription as given? But maybe someone else wants to give it a try as
well.

Magy Roszalang is merely a misreading of Nagy Kosztolany, the Hungarian form
of Velke Kostolany.

Julianna,
Pricing varies from time to time, but all are close in price.

Since you have been using Reunion on a MAC, you have been using a program that
is unicode compliant, and therefore can display, store, and transfer and print
any of the Slovak and other specially accented characters. Of the ones you
mention below only Roots Magic is able to do this. The other ones cannot
display such diacritics. If you are interested only in plain vainilla English
language material, any of those will do. But if you need a program that will
handle the diacritics, Roots Magic, Ancestral Quest, or or Geno Pro, are
probably the way to go.

I did some research typing in the 1869 Hungarian Census and this came up
www.tccweb.org. It is only a parcial list, 34 pages. The supplement also came
from the same site. I have 106 pages so I need to search more and find out where
I got all of those. In properties for what I have I originally downloaded it in
2002.

Just wondering if you are looking in the same general area as I am.

Julianna et al,

I'm not sure if I have posted this to Slovak-Roots before so will add in
my two cents. Let me say up front that I have no interest, financial or
otherwise in any software company or product so what I will say is
merely my opinion.

After a lot of research and reading what others had to say about various
genealogy software products, I chose Genealogy J (aka GenJ) for my
family tree database. Genealogy J is Free Open Source Software (FOSS)
so you can download it, use it, re-distribute it, and even modify it if
you want and it's completely free. Because of this, there are a lot of
programmers working on it all the time so it is always current and you
never have to pay for an update.

GenJ is written in Java so it is platform independent and will run on
any machine that has Java installed. This was attractive to me as I am
running Linux on my machines and my brother is running Windows and some
of my relatives are using MACs but we can all run GenJ. GenJ also
reads/writes GEDCOM files which are the genealogy standard. This means
that I can share my family tree with my family and relatives regardless
of what operating system they have on their computer and they can open
and edit the file with GenJ then send it back to me so we can
collaborate electronically to build the family history database.

GenJ offers family tree, table, time line views and more. With GenJ you
can store photos, images, and video/audio clips, too. It is available
in German, French, Spanish, Russian, Polish, and Hungarian so It handles
unicode (diacritics) just fine.

GenJ is easy to install because there is nothing to install. You just
run the java file. Of course you can modify the source code to so some
special thing you need it to do but I haven't found anything I needed or
wanted to do that wasn't already included. GenJ was easy for me to
learn. All the menus are context sensitive and the documentation is
adequate to get started working with your genealogy data.

Well, enough rambling about GenJ. If you want to check it out and
perhaps download it, you can do so here:

http://genj.sourceforge.net/wiki/en/manual/context

As I said, just my two cents but I hope you may find them useful.

As usual my research contains a mystery. I have been working on Michael
Kupecz from Kurimka born 1851.

I believe I have found his death entry in the Greek Catholic Church
records from his village although it appears he died in Hazleton,Pa.

I have posted the record for Michael in our files. He is the last person
listed for 1893. The reason for his death is hard to make out and there
is a notation in the obsevations column that is unclear.

Is anyone willing to take a look at this file and help me out? It fits
right in with my research and there is also a listing for him at the
Family Search sight. http://www.familysearch.org/eng/default.asp

I am hoping some one agrees with what I have found.

Thanks,Dennis

Dennis,

My deciphering is:
Kupecz Mihaly died in Harleton by "eroszakos halal" = violent death. The
note is: "A belugyminiszterium f. e. 93.624 sz. atviabu??? alapjan
iratott be ilegible signature" - recorded based on note of Ministry of
Interior No 93.624

I have been trying to get a form (G-639) to complete so I can get information on
my
grandfather's naturalization.  I went to www.uscis.gov/genealogy  and have had
no luck
finding the form.
Please, I need help because I must be doing something wrong.

Mary:

That's crazy, you never know how those silly sites are going to work! I just
sent off that form with regard to my paternal grandfather. Just Google the form
itself (nothing else, just "G-639") and it should come up for you in the search
area. The search should yield a PDF file which you can fill in on line. Also
download another PDF file which gives you instructions on how to fill it out the
form.

Good luck, that's how I did it. Filled it in online, signed it and off it went
yesterday to Philadelphia. Let me know how you fare. If all else fails, is
there a local FHC near you. I have an extra I got from the center I went to in
Mesa, AZ. I didn't use it, cuz I'm lazy, and liked the idea of filling/typing
it in online.

Cheers,
JB

Hi... Are you the Mary Johnson with roots in Gbely? Kocak, etc.
In any case you can email me at lkocik@... and I can give you the
address for a guy that will email you a copy of naturalization documents for
$3.00. He lives in Salt Lake so he copies them from the LDS temple there.

Hello Dennis,

I live in Hazleton, PA. Do you know if Michael Kupecz buried here? If so, do
you know where? When the weather breaks I would be willing to photograph his
tombstone if I know where to look.

Let me know.

Hi Mary,

When you go to the uscis website type G-639 in the search box. Several
selections will come up for you to read about. G-639 is the Freedom of
Information Act/Privacy Act Request. I'm not sure this is the form you need
though to request information on your grandfather's naturalization. I just
requested records for two of my ancestors and the form I used is 1041. Here is
how I did it.

1. When you go to the web site "Related Links" is on the right.
2. Click on "Make a Genealogy Request". All the instructions will come up and
you can choose to order on-line or make a request by postal mail.
3. You first need to request an "Index Search" ($20.00) for each request. An
Index Search will determine if any records on your ancestor are available. If
so, you will be notified and assigned a Case ID.
4. After you are assigned a Case ID, you can request copies of the records.
(using form 1041A $35.00 for each record)

Hope that helps. The website says they are just now processing requests from
Oct 2009 so it will be awhile. My requests were made in the beginning of
January and I did everything on line. For me its much easier that way.

If you subscribe to Ancestry.com, there are a growing number of naturalization
records available there on-line. Maybe you'll be lucky!
