I just got the information for the Saint John Nepomuk festival yesterday and
it will be on line later this weekend.

Saint John was the Mother church of all Eastern European churches in Saint
Louis. All of the Eastern European Catholic Churches of the Byzantine,
Roman, and Ukrainian Rite had their start at Saint John's.

If you have Saint Louis roots, the History of Saint John Nepomuk book is a
must as it lists quite a few families and early records in it. It also has a
brief history of all Saint Louis Eastern European ehnic churches in it.

visited St. John Nepomuk Church in St. Louis where records are kept
from Holy Trinity.

While there, we were able to actually get some of the bread which is
available from Watra Church Goods, Chicago, Il.  I think the name of
the bread is Oplatki.

This is a flat, white, unleavened bread, exactly the type used for
Communion Host, but shaped in a 3" x 6" rectangle, with embossed
scenes of the nativity story.  It comes in a 5" x 8" envelope printed
with a picture of an old country family celebrating their Christmas
gathering dressed in lovely costumes. (The costumes look Polish.)

Can anyone tell me the story and meaning of this custom? No one seems
to know what or why.  How did it originate? Was it a tradition from
the old country? (So far, no luck in finding this on any website.)

My dad used to make a special, prayerful, solemn ceremony of passing
this bread out to us children on Christmas Eve.  It was served with
honey.  With the passage of time and separating circumstances, the
meaning is lost to me.

Does anyone know how I can research this ceremony?  Thank you for any
help on the Oplatki question.  I am as interested in the customs and
life circumstances of our ancestors as I am tracking the vital
statistics. I have a feeling wherever there is a larger Roman
Catholic Czech/Slovak community of descendants, this bread and the
ceremony is known and used--but not found here in Atlanta, GA.

child I am now 65, my grandmother was from Austria,Hungry which today is
known as Slovakia, It  a blessed piece and we couldnot waste it. if it
dropped on the floor,I remember my grandmother would pick it up and eat

St. John Nepomuk Church is the first Czech Catholic church in the New World. 
This is the church all my ancestors settled in when they immigrated from Bohemia
to St. Louis in the late 1840s and early 1850s.

I'm tracing my Slovak roots back to Smilno, Slovakia.  CERUL, CZERULYA, CZERULY,
MARCINEK, SITEK.
Finally found that the town of Smilno is/was in the Zboro/Zborov Roman Catholic
Parish and have obtained the
LDS films at the local FHC.  (All 7 reels)

I have found my Grandfather's and Grandmother's baptism entries, among others.
but have run into a
problem with my GF's Father. (My GGF)

The Parent entry for a 1st child lists My GGF as Janos CZERULYA and as a RK.
  In the 2nd child's (my GF) entry He is listed as Janos CZERULY GK  z. Petrovaj
(I think)

Is the "z. Petrovaj" an occupation or does it indicate that he is from Petrova,
a town about 9 KM east
of Smilno?

For information the Film reels for this parish are reel #'s  1920551 - 1920553 &
1920561 - 1920564 and include
the towns of Zborov, Smilno, Hutka, Stebnik, Stebnicka-Hutta, and a couple
others that I haven't been able
to decipher,  All in Saris County.

  Any assistance would be greatly appreciated, and would place me in your debt.

We make, Stollen, or fruited Christmas bread.  Sweet butter dough, dried
apricots, almonds, cherries, raisins, and figs sometimes.  I soak the fruit
in rum and it is gone before the morning is over.

We always had a catfish fry and lots of potatoes and vegetables from the

Tell me, are the entries for child #1 and child #2 otherwise the same,
meaning by the same person, in the same language, in the same handwriting,
etc.?  What years are we talking about here?  I ask because surnames change
depend on who is writing them.  Hungarians tend to use their orthography,
Slovaks another, and sometimes the dialect version of the name is used
versus an official version.

This is probably the same person, but you can't be sure unless you find
marriage and/or death records for these two children, confirming the name of
their father.  And probably spelling it a third and fourth way!

You do not say in which church these records were made.  That is important
also.

I use those Zborov records periodically. Generally they are well written
and easy to use.

Much depends tho on the priest who wrote the entries in terms of
handwriting and how they recorded the names. Even the same priest will
spell the names differently if you look at enough  birth, marriage and
death entries for a family over time. (You should see how they mangled
NECHASEK, which is the main surname I am looking for there, I think at
last county I had 6 different spellings.) I wouldn't get too hung up on
it, tho I do usually note in the notes of my PAF how the name was
spelled just to make it easier for family members who may use my data in
50 years :)

Usually a note after a parents name or a bride/grooms name indicates
where they were born or at least where they came from. I'd say what you
are looking at is a location.

As for the RK vs. GK, I have come across one mistake like that in those
records in my family too. Maybe the priest just wrote fast that day. To
my knowledge, only Roman Catholic records are on those films, at least
the 3 I looked at.

So far I have that my great grandfather died on August 7, 1948 at 11
in the evening, in his 80th year, after a long illness.  He was born
in Gayaroch Slovakia and lived in America for 50 years.Funeral will

Hi all
	 Is there a website or does anyone have a generic letter for
requesting  vital records such as birth and death records from
Slovakia in Slovak?  Or is there someone for hire that can provide
such a service?  I have some of these typed in English when I request
vital records from the archives here in the U. S. but didn't know if
such a resource was on the internet.

	 Also, can someone point me to a direction for central
archives for Slovakia and how much records cost?  Or their
experiences requesting such records?  I am ready to make the "jump"
and am interested in others' experiences.  Thanks..

You can write to the Archives in Slovakia in English.   I did and it only
took about 4 to 6 weeks for results.  I received alot of information on my
ancestors and it only cost about 50.00.  Use Air Mail, return receipt, if you
don't it will take months for your letter to get to Slovakia.

I had an interesting point brought to my attention.  On my great
grandfathers obit it talks about 117 C.S.A.  and his leisure time
there.  Does anyone have any idea what this might be???   I am sure
my great grandfather passed away in Chicago or one of the suburbs.

C.S.A on tombstones or obits in the US usually either refers to the
"Confederate States of America" (i.e. the South) or the organization for
veterans and descendants called Confederate Sons of America. If he
fought in the US Civil War, that might refer to a lodge or group of the
Confederate Sons of America.

Many immigrants did fight in US wars, and if an immigrant fought in a
war, the waiting period for naturalization was forgiven, so many
immigrants got their citizenship that way.

Of course, I live in Mobile AL where this is a big thing! So this is the
context I know CSA. But many southerners did fight for the north, and
vice versa, so it's not an impossible thought.

I waited for them to bill me, because I wasn't sure of what I was doing, or
if there was any information.  I only had a slight idea of where my
grandfather was from and his birthdate.  I sent all the information I had and
waited.  Send you mail----Air Mail, return receipt and they do the same.  It
is much quicker.  If you think there is information to be found you could
send a cashiers check for $50.00 and hope for the best, I do not know if they
return any unused funds.

With the Archives help ( they were very helpful to me)  and further use of
the Family History Center  films, I know have information back to my
ggg-grandfather!!!!!.

I just received the death certificates of My paternal grandparents which
give their names and the names of their parents and their birthdates.

They are Karol Bagin, born in Czecho-Slovakia on September 10, 1877 to
Michael Bagin and Elizabeth Kralik

and Mary Bagin, born in czecho-slovakia on June 15, 1881 to Joseph Minar and
Eva Zsikavszky.

Could very well be that he is a owner or associated with the business.  I
have a second cousin who is a dentist and that information is placed next
to her name.  I've seen it with others in the phone book also.  I think it
would indicate more than a normal employee relationship with the business.

By the way, do you have any Starinskys in your tree?  My b-i-l's father was
from Plavnica and I stopped to take some photos and videotape of the
village and cemetery while passing through last Fall.

Your translation you sent to me is, for the most part, quite good.  Little
bits that I can add are as follows:
His dwelling was at 10348 South Albany Ave.
After a lengthy stay in a hospital he died on Saturday, 7 August 1948 at 11
o'clock in the evening. . .
Gayaroch is not listed as any village, city, county/zupa or district/okres
so that one is a puzzler.
Something is pertaining to perhaps a group or organization called Freedom
number 117 C.S.A.  (Czechs and Slovaks of America??) as there were political
attempts to help free their countrymen from Austrio-Hungarian rule.  This is
a big guess on my part!

The funeral proceedings will begin on a Wednesday, the 11th of August at 9
o'clock in the morning at the chapel  of the mortuary of John V. Satala at
4744 South Damien Ave, then on to St. Michael the Archangel Church.   After
the solemn/sorrowful  services a farewell of the beloved body/remains of the
departed will  take place/be buried in the cemetery of the Crucified Lord.
(Not sure of this cemetery's name.)

Za tichu sustrast prosia:  It's something like "We extend our condolences
to. . ."

You seem to have the names and relationships in good translation.  The ml.
after Stefan means Jr.

I hope this helps and is not too far off in some areas.  I had to assume
