Hi Catherine,

I recognize you from the Jakubany group.

I should've been more clear in that the Skapura name, specifically for my family
line, isn't likely to be the original name. It was something like Skorzepa.
When they moved into Jakubany it Somehow became Skapura, which they continued to
use.

Thank you for the transliteration of the name. I will add it to my notes!

Tara

   Hi,

I think "Skapura" is fairly close to an original spelling. I have a
Skapura family Bible where they recorded births and marriages. The
names are written using the Cyrillic alphabet (Russian), and the
   sounds would transliterate into: Shkapoora

Catherine (wife of a Skapura whose family came from Jakubany)

Anyone researching the Herich family?
Karol Herich, born July 7 1869, died July 20, 1956. Married to Anna
Geletko, born July 22, 1872, died July 13, 1949. They are buried in
Hnilcik, Slovakia
Photo of their gravestone at http://homepage.mac.com/rskapura1/hnilcik/

Anna Herichova, born January 8, 1893, at Jerohutta #1. Married to
Michal Geletko, born November 28, 1891, died June 6, 1965. Buried in
Hnilcik, Slovakia.
Photo of the double headstone at the above link. No death date for
Anna.
This makes me think she moved away, probably to live with one of her
children, after her husband died and is buried somewhere else.
There must have been children, because the headstone says, "Here lies
our beloved father..."

If you assume that the children live in the same phone area code, the
only other places where the Herich name appears in phone listings are
Spisska Nova Ves and Smizany. Smizany is a western suburb of Spisska
Nova Ves.

Anyone researching Lesko?

I am now abstracting all information for the Lesko/Lessko surname from
LDS film 1739198, which is the area around Hnilcik, and posting it at
http://www.geocities.com/cathskap/Geletko_Puskar_Ancestry/index.html

So far I've got the page up for Lesko/Lessko Deaths 1810-1843, 1852-
1859.

Catherine,
Nice job on all the names you posted. I went to look out of curiosity.
Where is Hnilcik? I was amazed at the number of surnames I recognized. I
grew up in Struthers, Ohio, which is near Youngstown and the
Ohio-Pennsylvania border. We had so many families with all of those names
living in Struthers. The Steel Mill was the big draw. In my own personal
research, I found a lot of the same names you listed, but I was researching
in Teplicska, Csepanfalu, Marcu Shovec (all near Spissa Nova Ves) area.
Have you looked into that area for your ancestors or are they only in the
area you mentioned? I am particularly interested in your entry for
Susanna. November 4, 1871.
p: Stephanus Puskar & Helena Dzuricza, Bindt #86

What more can you tell me about Helena Dzuricza. Dzuricza is in my father's
mother's line.

Thanks,
Marilyn

Csepanfalu = Marcu Shovec(sic) = Markusovce

Hnilcik is 7 km south of Markusovce and 6 km south of Teplicka "as the
crow flies". It's about 3X further by road.

Thanks. My husband's ancestors went to Pennsylvania from

Sorry, but I don't know anything about the Dzuricza family. Right
now I don't know many of the the connections to the people I've

was married to Ann, Rose Radocha's sister. Exhausted all family

There were actually three Frank Dives in Chicago in the 1920 Census, two of
them with wives named Rose! The first one, though, is probably the one you
are looking for:

Frank Divis, age 29, Box Maker, born Illinois, parents born
Bohemia

             Rose, age 28

             Edward, age 8

             Evelyn, age 1

             John Radocha, brother-in-law, single

Frank Divis, age 31, Freight Handler for RR,

             Anna, 32

Dear Lorna,
Are you trying to find a connection between your surname and a place with the
same name? Or better say, find the roots of your family in a place called Stein?
This hardly ever works, because the surnames derived from the place name have
been created long before the records you can research.
Vladimir

Hello Richard,
Thank you for the information regarding this name. It makes me wonder what the
origin of the name is and if it derived from an occupation. (writer, printer
etc.?)
All information I have lists the BUCHSTABIRER family as being Roman Catholic.
Is there something specific about the name that makes you think it might be
jewish?
Thanks for your insight!

A while back, someone was asking about the 1869 Hungarian Census for
Bardejovska Zabava. The SEARCH function seems to have had cardiac
arrest. Here is a reply from Mick Sura.

Bardejovska Zabava was still part of town Bardejov, they have never
had any church there in Bardejovska Zabava. So, I do not think that
there was census in Bardejovska Zabava in 1869. I am aware only
Bardejov census 1849, which is kept in Bardejov archive.

Welcome to the board and a new hobby. One thing you have left out is the
religion associated with each family name.

Let's start with an easy one. >>> Szobrancz, Ung Megye, Hungary
(ZELIK) <<< Given that village name, we are starting with an assumption
that the genealogy is Slovak rather than Czech.

Sobrance is just east of Michalovce. The Zelik name appears in area code
056, none are in Sobrance or nearby. GC church records are available for
Sobrance at LDS. What religion was Zelik?

Prahura? Are you sure? Any other clues? What is the source? Need more
info on this village. Could it be Prague = Praha?

Blazovice might be Blazov, Slovakia, formerly Balázsvágás,
Sáros, Hungary. This area is a military reserve now. Vyskov might be
Vyskov, Morava, Czech or it might be Vyskovce, Slovakia;
formerly Viskócz, Sáros, Hungary. Boleslav might be in Bohemia.

Flumaca or Tlumacas needs more information. Unable to identify.

In Slovak phone records, the Senkyrik name appears ONLY in Trnava, area
code 033, northwestern Slovakia.

Blazek appears 154X. WHERE should we be looking? What language did they
speak? What religion?
Gahura appears 3X in area code 052 and 034. What village should we be
looking at? Western Slovakia or north central? Or was Gahura Czech?

Well yes because I was so startled to see STEIN as a Bohemian town.

Even if I couldn't establish a personal connection I still want to
know if the derivation of the name might have come from that area.
Thanks, Lorna

Okay, but were there common ancestry between Germans and the Boii
celts perhaps?

Thank you so very much!! Yes the first Divis children are my aunts and
uncles, so that would have been my grandfather! And the second name
listed with the Anna wife must have been Rose's sister so I can maybe
find part of that family that no one seems to know about, not even her
brother. Lorna

Lorna,

You had said you were looking for Frank's parents' names also, which are
those shown in the 1900 Census.

Good luck to you,

Janet

Dear Daniel,

You misunderstood. The present name of kisszolyva is
Skotarskoye/Skotarske/Szkotarczka/Skotarszkoje (and other variations) in
Ukraine. The names I gave you are surnames of families that were found in
that village according to the RadixIndex
(http://www.radixindex.com/placeindex/kisszolyva.shtml).

Hi...
Does this mean that the name changed to become one of the following names?
Do you know what the name is now?

To the experts out there...

I just found one of my GGF's in the 1869 Hungarian Census and cannot
read/interpret all that is written in the columns.

I have read and think I understand the headers and commonly used Hungarian
words from the 'iabsi' web site. However, I am wondering if some of the
handwriting might be in Slovak?

Some of the words (as I interpret the handwriting) are:

Col. 7 (after religion) -- 'lndiy' (?) or maybe 'lndry' (?)
Col. 8 Lirylufnno (?) or maybe 'Tirylufnno'

Also, over the names is written two words, but, for example, over the wife's
name the word is not 'neje', but I cannot make out the letters.

Is there another source of key words used in the 1869 Hungarian Census?

   thank you,
   Marilyn Sandorf

Your subject line mentions Lesko. There were Leskos living in Whitney,
Pennsylvania, (Unity Township, Westmoreland County) during my childhood days in
this coal patch. I don't know if they are still there.

I have never seen any of the census written in Slovak. Magyar was the
language mandated.
Try the FHL Hungarian Language guide

LESKO is a hugely common surname, with many unrelated lines. Tread
carefully lest you end up on many wild good chases.
