My grandfather, George Rabatin b.1878 immigrated from Slovakia in the
1890's. He may have come with his brother John. George's 1st wife
Anna Sobel died and he married Anna (Roskos) Marenchin. It was also
her second marriage. The marriages were in the early 1900's. We are
not sure how they got to the US. They did not come though Ellis. The
family is Luthern, and we are looking at towns around Presov. Included
is Kalava, Vajkovce, Vojkovce. On George Rabatin's death certificate
it lists the birth town as "Walkovec". Since we are going to Slovakia
on April 20th, 2006, any help locating Luthern Rabatin's in Eastern
Slovakia is appreciated.

my family tree is posted at genealogy.com. and at LDS.

Anyone needing photographs from around the Presov area as well, please
let me know, if will be in the right area i will try to help.

Are you still trying to figure out the correct village? Is it
Valkovce at 49°10' 21°32' or Vojkovce at 48°57' 20°52'. Kalava is at
48°56' 20°52' and is near Vojkovce. There is a mountain trail
between these two villages.

There are 20 Rabatin(ova) listed in area code 051 and 14 in area
code 053. Some direct hits.

CHURCH RECORDS AT LATTER DAY SAINTS (MORMON) LDS FAMILY HISTORY
CENTER (FHC)
When searching for genealogical information, knowing the birth
village is paramount because records are organized by village not
nationally, so it is not possible to search on a national basis. It
is also necessary to know the religion. To locate church records for
Slovakia, knowing the village/town name, go to the LDS web site:
www.familysearch.org/Eng/Library/FHLC/frameset_fhlc.asp

Your local LDS Family History Center can get Evangelical parish
registers of baptisms, marriages and deaths for Krompachy,
Slovensko, Czechoslovakia, formerly known as Krompach (or Korompa),
Szepes, Hungary. For earlier years see Catholic parish.

LDS also has Evangelical parish registers of baptisms, marriages and
deaths for Giraltovce, Slovakia, formerly Girált, Sáros, Hungary.

These are the nearest Evangelical parish registers to your
respective villages.

LDS FICHES (set of 6) LDS #6000786
Survey of parish registers in Slovakia up to the time of civil
registration. Provides details of church records that are held in
Slovak archives. Index of villages is on fiche #6 and page
references refer to different religions. Most of these church
records are available on film via your LDS Family History Center.

LOCATE YOUR NEAREST FAMILY HISTORY CENTER AND ORDER FILM
You can go to the LDS web site to locate your nearest Family History
Center (FHC) and determine their hours of operation. You will need
to go there in person to order the film(s). In about a month, the
film will arrive and you can book a film reader and begin your
research.

TRANSLATION OF CHURCH RECORDS
Checkout http://www.bmi.net/jjaso/ for parish record header
translations.

LDS also has a pretty good translation guide which you can download.
See forums.delphiforums.com/iarelative/messages message #3931.1 for
details.

Have you tried to go to " Google Earth." It is an amazing resource with which
you can type in the location of the place you want to find, and it will take you
there via a satelite map. once there you can do many things like zoom in and
out, select various landmarks, etc. And the neatest part is that along the
bottom on the satelite view, it depicts the exact lat/longs and altitude.

I do have the towns located the Podrobny Autoatlas of Slovakia, has
very good maps.

I have written letters to the Rabatin's listed in the Slovak phone
directory in and around the Kalava and Presov areas. No responses as
yet letters sent about 3 to 4 weeks ago to listed Rabatin(ova's). One
small email response from an Ing.Rabatin in Presov. sent email, no
secondary response from him.

LDS - at least in the Tampa area, I have called and visited a number
of churches, found none open during business week. Called the LDS
History Center in the Tampa area, left phone message (I do have the
LDS numbers of the Micro's) but no response from messages left.

I will be back in the Tampa area next week and will call the LDS yet,
again for a response. And I also hope to hear from the people I wrote
letters to as well as email's sent (letters contained info on my
family tree to see if they felt there was a connection as well as
sources to look my tree up on the internet).

Have also sent for more death certificates from the State of
Pennsylvania. 3 weeks and waiting.

I also have contacted a local person recommended, that is doing prlim.
research for me in the areas mentioned.

I seem to see that most of the Rabatin's come from the Kalava area,
but they all seem to be Catholic. Not sure at this point whether the
area contained Luthern's in the late 1800's. or wheather there is an
area that was or still is Luthern.

have had a few inputs on what "Walkovec" may have translated into
these seem to be the towns of Valkovce or Vojkovce.

Leaving for Slovakia in April.
Hope to have more info by then will follow up on your information.
thanks
andy

There is no point in visiting the LDS churches. The Family History
Center is the only place to go. Their address and hours are shown
above. What do you expect to learn from a phone call?

Keep in mind that they are all volunteers and will know next to
nothing (personally) about Slovakia or Poland. They WILL be able to
order the church records films, which may take about a month to
arrive. YOU have to do the research -- not them.

Yes, Mick has researched the Dubravka GC records at Satoraljaujhely
for me. This was necessary because there is a 20-year gap in the
Slovak-archived GC records filmed by LDS.

Mick is not only professional but also fairly local, living in Kosice
and fluent in English.

However, since "time is money", I would recommend that readers FIRST
do as much research as possible themselves and then ask the pros
to "fill in the blanks". Nothing comes for free -- it's either your
TIME or your MONEY.

I have used Michael. Without a doubt he is legitimate and his prices are fair.
Do not hesitate to ask him to help you. He was able to find information on my
grandfather's family (which was no easy task) and find direct cousins from my
grandmother's family. He will no disappoint you.

Michael Sura just did some research for me on my maternal grandmother. I had
very little info to work with and it turns out that some nicknames evolved into
surnames and it was quite a confusing search. He did a great job sorting all the
information out. He sends a written report with notes, not just a pedigree view.
I was very pleased with the research Michael did for me and he is very
reasonably priced.
   Regards,
   Ed

Here is what may be a partial list of the Szninna (Snina) records
available at the Satoraljaujhely archives. There may be other Snina
records there also.

My understanding is that the PA means a declaration of intent has been filed.
The AL means that a person is still an alien. That confused me for a while. I
couldn't figure out how my New Jersey resident ancestors got to alabama :)

What column? I don't think it stands for petition, it was never required to
note that.
Is it possible s/he was naturalized in PA/ Pennsylvania?

I think that means they applied for their Petition to become Naturalized.

I have been a "lurker" for some time while beginning my search for clues
about my ancestors. This a very basic question. On the 1920 census forms,
under the catagory "Citizenship", the column "Naturalized or Alien" has
three answers. I assume "Na" = naturalized, "Al" = Alien. What does "Pa"
mean?

"Pa" (for papers), if he, or she, has declared intention to become

I ran across this same thing last Thursday. I thought that my
relatives were naturalized in Penn., which didn't make sense since
they were living in Ohio. Thank you so much for clearing this up.

Hello,
I have been researching my Slovak roots with LDS records which are in Latin.
My question to fellow researchers out there -- when you do your family tree
records do you use the Latin first names, the Slovak name, or the English
equivalent. For example: Andreas or Ondrej or Andrew? Thanks for your input.

I tend NOT to use the English equivalent but if he was born Michael,
then Michael it is. That may switch to Michal in later church records
and perhaps Mihaly. I don't like Josephus, for example.

You should record names as they are written in each record. The most
important reason is to be as true to the documented source as you can.
this ensures that your records are 100 percent accurate (that you did
not plagiarize from another source). And it ensures that future
researchers who may be relying on your records can go back to the
source and find the names as you have recorded them.

I use ALL the names, but refer to the First [by date] as the 'base name'
for the individual.
With a good computer genealogy program, you can record ALL the various
forms you will find in records, such as my Grandfather:

Imrich Havlicek, Henry Havlicek, Emrich Havlicek, Emmerich Havlicek.

Dear Jerry and Liz,
It may be that you are going to find you will run out of time to see all
the places; Aloshalas, Lipinki, Krzatka and Rozalin. Since Krzatka and
Rozalin are so close to one another they can be seen in one day. After
looking at some maps it has become apparent that your travel days are going
to out number your visiting days, which is not all bad since you will be
seeing so much of the countries. I saw where you said you would like to fly
into Budapest and fly out of Krakow. John said that it would take about four
hours to drive from Budapest to your destination in Slovakia. If you have
eight days your itinerary would go something like this:
Day 1: New Jersey to Budapest (six hours ahead of NJ). If all goes well
you will make it to Slovakia. If not ...
Day 2: Transit to Slovakia, tour Aloshalas, or a full day touring.
     Day 3. Tour Slovakia
Day 4. Transit to Lipinki, approximately four hours. Tour Lipinki.
     Day 5. Tour Lipinki
Day 6. Transit to Rozalin and Krzatka, approximately three hours. Tour
Rozalin and Krzatka.
Day 7. Half a day in Rozalin and Krzatka. Transit to Krakow,
approximately 4 hours.
     Day 8. Return home.
As you can see the days are filled. What is going to be the most difficult
is arranging the transportation to all these places. The ideal would for you
to have a translator who speaks both Slovak and Polish and has a car. That
way he could meet you in Budapest and get you all the way to Krakow. A
combination translator/driver I think would cost in the range of a $100 to
$150 a day, plus expenses. Remember this is where gas costs nearly $4 a
gallon.
There are other ways of doing things. But I wanted to show you something
of what I have experienced on my trips. The days do go by so quickly. If you
end up meeting relatives there you will wish you had more time to spend with
them than you have.
Nonetheless, the trip should be a wonderful one. It's just with such a
short time you have you should try to do as much as possible before arriving
to make it a special trip.
So take the time and develop that itinerary. But always be prepared for
something to disrupt it.

Thanks so much. We are really open to any suggestions on how to organize
the trip. I will try to find the Mayors of each town and write to them.
That is a wonderful idea. We are both excited and worried we are attempting
too much in two countries were we don't speak the language.
The towns we would visit in Poland are Lipinki ad Biez (SUREK). Rozalin
Bielow Woj Tarnosbzeg (REGULA) and Krzatka Woj Tarnosbzeg (SUDOL).
I know that Stanislaus Regula was born May 5, 1872 in Lipinki ad Biez and
was the son of Anny Regula. Marianna Sudol was born May 5, 1874 in Krzatha
woj Tarnobreg, daughter of Wojciecha Sudol and Anny Serafin)
They married in Krzatka woj Tarnobreg, Majdan, Kolbuszowa 25 November 1896.
Those towns all seem to be outside of Krakow and fairly close to each other.

Dear Jerry and Liz,
I have been reading the Slovak Roots postings. I thought it best to send
the following information directly to you.
First, I would like to understand your trip. You say you have eight
days. Your primary points of interest are Aloshalas, Slovakia and Pagorzyna,
Poland (which is near Wojtowa, Poland). Correct?
I see that you are planning to fly into Kosice first, visit Aloshalas
and then go to Poland.
On doing some research I found that the nearest large airport to
Pagorzyna is Krachow (KRK) it has three airlines that service it that might
be of interest to you. Austrian Air to and from Vienna. CSA Czech Airlines
to and from Prague. LOT Polish Airlines to and from Frankfurt and Vienna.
Kocise airport has service from Vienna and Prague.
If your eight days include your travel days, that will give you six days
in Europe. One of those will be a travel day between Slovakia and Poland.
That gives you five days to tour.
If you think you might have a chance to connect with relatives in either
town I would suggest that you write the Mayor of each town. They know
everyone and if relatives are there he can tell them when you hope to be
there. When you get to town, go to the City Hall first. They are most
helpful.
Good luck,
Michael Mojher

I have NEVER been asked about cash on hand and would consider
carrying much CASH to be flat out irresposible. The bank machines
work very well and issue local currency "as required" to handle
situations not covered by a credit card. Others may have a different
point of view. I would have a reasonable supply of Euros but nothing
excessive -- certainly not $50/day.

We have year-round travel health insurance -- not trip insurance.
Around here, you can add it to your house insurance, as well as
buying it from others.

Jerry and Liz,
First, what airline are you using, out of interest.
Not once in my four trips did I have such requirements asked of me.
I agree with John, you don't need to carry that much cash. Hungary, Slovakia
and Poland are still using their own currency. The dollar as of today is worth
209 Hungarian Forint, 31 Slovak Kruna and 3 Polish Zloty.
ATM's are every where, so getting local currency is easy.
As for health insurance, contact your company and see if they will cover you
in Europe. My sister had to use the health care system in Slovakia. The doctor
charged nothing. The cost of her three prescriptions was under $20.

I second this: I too have never been asked to show or prove if I had
sufficient funds or health insurance. However, it's my understanding that
you should at least be prepared to answer this, if asked, so I'm always
prepared. Other than (as John mentions) travel insurance, all I've ever
brought with me has been proof that I have medical/health coverage through
my employer. If anything happens while you're there, you're responsible for
paying the bills yourself & then submitting these for reimbursement to your
employer's medical/health insurance carrier...& apparently, that's how most
employers' insurance handle it.

As for money, my Slovak husband & I used to bring some cash, some
traveller's checks, we'd use our credit cards in places that accepted them,
& we'd also get money using our ATM cards. (Although we try to avoid
getting cash advances from credit cards, I believe I've done this once
during my 7 years of going to Slovakia.) Now we don't bother with
traveller's checks because you have to pay to exchange them & (if I recall
correctly) it's a bit more expensive than just exchanging US dollars to
Slovak crowns. More places accept credit cards, so we also use those more
because they offer a decent exchange rate, & we always exchange US dollars
for crowns (only at banks) as soon after we arrive as possible.

I can't answer as well for using money in Poland, as we typically only visit
the open-air flea market in Nowy Targ, which caters to Slovaks & will very
readily accept either Slovak crowns or US dollars. I have, however, in the
past visited Zakopane & was able to either use US dollars are exchange US
dollars for Polish zloty with no problem.

The requirement for a specific amount of money per day and health
insurance sounds like the old requirements from the communist days
being repeated. It may be technically still required, it may be
simply a hold-over in language someone repeated - or a suggestion
someone interpreted as a requirement and published.

Even in the communist days I never had the authorities check. As
everyone suggests, I do most of my transactions with my standard ATM
card.

It is pretty much the same. just have to find a Kantor and exchange USD for
Zloty.
i actually found it easier to exchange money in Poland than in Slovakia. In
Slovakia, i had to find a hotel that had an exchange Kantor and then you had
to show your passport to get Koruny. In Poland, just an exchange was made, no
passport no fuss.

I agree. I was never asked for proof of insurance or to show money. Credit cards
would suffice in any event to show you had means to pay for expenses there. Just
be sure to advise your bank and credit card companies you will be in Central
Europe. A Bancomats in Kosice ate one of my cards because there was a snafu
between my bank and their European counterpart. Put your notification to the
bank/card companies in writing!

I thought it was strange too, to require a certain amount of money and
health insurance. Sounds like one of those rules no one enforces. We will
NOT bring large amounts of cash - but did decide to get a package of
travel/medical insurance through our homeowners policy. Also glad I read
the State Department info as we will be getting some vaccine updates before
we go.
I really want to thank everyone for all the information and guidance.
We are flying Continental/KLM/CSA from Newark to Warsaw to Rzeszow (back to
Warsaw) to Prague to Kosice (back to Prague) and home to Newark. Still
haven't confirmed, Here is the information I found..
