Looking for any information on the "GYUK" name. I would appreciate
any confirmation of its origin. This is my late mothers maiden
nameand would love to learn more about her past, for I was very young
when she passed away.
Thanks for any input.

Sincerely,
Mona

I am researching the following surnames originating from Hranovnica, Slovakia:
Fabry, Liptay, Kikta, Martinko
I have access to microfilm of church records from Hranovnica from circa
1820-1905 and am interested in sharing information and collaborating on
further research.

A color copier say at Kinko's can do an amazing job - sometimes the copies
look better than the originals. This way you could make one for each person
in the family. Some may feel that the light that shines on it for the
impression might hurt it but likely would give you amazing results and
properly conserving it could cost a great deal - maybe the experts in
historical preservation can help you.

However I advise color copying all old family photos and enlarging them -
for you see little details not visible at the time - like my favorite great
aunt in a family group photo taken when she was 12 - she was found to have a
decorated Easter egg
clutched in her hand.

This is much less expensive than going the photo reproduction route which
costs say $10 for a negative and more for each print. Color copies are
ereally reasonable and if you go to a nice place they hlep you and work to
get a good reproduction, especially if you are having more than one copy made.

Dear Joseph,

How wonderful that you have found your ancestral "home" and have surnames
to search. Hranovnica is a wonderful place! Looking up at the huge snow
capped Tatra Mts. filling the horizon is a gorgeous view from there!

We have a number of Fabri and Fabry surnames listed in our Slovak Pride
data base - think you might be interested in the ones from Spisske Bystre
just a few km to the west.

We have one Martinko listed from Spisske Stiavnik and one Kikta from
Hranovnica.

let me know if you would like to get in touch with the listers.

This is another name I am interested in finding out the origin. As
with the name "Gyuk" I posted earlier...it is the same reason behind
it. "Supposedly" my mothers maiden name was "Gyuk" but when she came
to Canada she used the name "Jug". I am so curious to get the facts.
Was it due to a translation problem? I don't know...I'm just
grabbing

Thanks again!

If you wind up using many copies especially color you might check into
getting a moderate quality scanner as you can use them to copy and also have
a computer file of the photo or document.

I found a good deal at a Wal-Mart.

I'd suggest two possibilities for the surname Gyuk/Jug.

My Slovakia census (no locations or data) just a summary of 50,000
surnames, lists only 50 surname that begin Gy (no Gyuk)

In Hungarian, the letter gy is pron. d.

In Canada telephone White Pages , see 5 surname Gyuk are listed.
Sandor (Alexander) is a Hungarian male first name.

Feminine first name Lubyca (Ljubica) looks South Slavic (i.e.
former Yugoslavia)

In most Slavic languages (Czech, Slovak, Polish, Croatian etc., plus
Hungarian, the letter j is pron. y.

Most common example is Jugoslavija = Yugoslavia.

Are you sure the name is of Slovak ethnicity ?
Possibly its ethnicity is Slovene ?

Slovenia was once a part of former Yugoslavia in the Balkans.
Slovakia was once a part of former Czechoslovakia in Central Europe.

If you write to Slovenia and don't use Slovenija, the letter
probably gets mailed to Slovakia.
If you use Slovensko for Slovakia the letter probably ends up
in Slovenia ? Our U.S. Postal Service doesn't seem to know
the difference either.

How are you ? English

Hogy Van ? Hungarian (Non-Slavic)

Ako sa más^ ? Slovak

Jak se máte ? Czech

Jak sie pan miewa ? Polish

Kako ste ? Croatian/Slovene

Hi! According to the "Navzy obci" and the Slovak atlas - Hajnick is now
called Hajnicky and is located in central Slovakia on the out skirts of a
famed spa Sliac~ which is just a few kilometers north of Zvolen and about 17
km south of Banska Bystrica. This was Zvolen County in the old days.

This is the region of the proud Detvans and I am curious as to where they
came from. I was told by villagers that long ago they were called by the
King from somewhere else to guard the borders. They are very proud and state
they were never serfs, but freemen. Would love to know more about this -can
anyone shed some light. They were farmers and sheperds and wonder if they
came via the Carpathians from Romania where there is a similar sheep-oriented
culture with somewhat similar music, songs, and customs - even some of the
sheep keeping words are connected.

I believe you may be referring to Hájniky in central Slovakia - - - next to
Sliač, 5 km north of Zvolen, 14 km south Banksá Bystrica, about 150 km
northeast of Bratislava.

Hi Irene,

I forwarded your message to her... I'm not sure what
she has... I know she found the passenger list that
had Anna coming over, but I don't know if she's
searched Rovne yet. I've not been able to help her
because I've been engrossed in the Gabris side (Anna's
husband's family). The Gabris' came from Cadca,
Slovakia, and I'm not finished putting the whole
puzzle together there.

I hope that you have a common ancestor somewhere. It
would be the first personal link since I've been on
the list.

Sincerely,

The surnames Bleha, Blaha, and Bleho all appear in the Slovakia
census.
Have no surname information.

The surname Bleha appears to be associated with both Zvolen (Sv)
Zólyom (H) and Hlink nad Hronom (Sv) Geletnek (H), Slovakia.
The surname Bleha also appears in the Czech Republic.

Too bad there are no online regional Slovakia telephone directories.
