Sea Kayak Lakes Area Kayak Enthusiasts (SKLAKE) exists to share accounts of our experiences, support each other in improving our skills, share tips on trips and gear, and enjoy paddling!
Weekly paddles are gatherings of paddlers who share an interest in kayaking and spending time together. Participants often paddle in the evening during the week from April through September on inland lakes and rivers in Oakland , Wayne, Livingston and Washtenaw Counties, Michigan. The duration of the paddles varies from 1 to 2 1/2 hours. Keep in mind, on these paddles we may encounter wind, waves, currents, obstacles, and cold water. A skirt is not necessary to paddle with this group, but if you use a skirt, you need to know how to do a wet exit. There is no guarantee that others will be there.
The weekly paddles are open to all interested individuals of any skill level and have the correct equipment for a safe paddle(seaworthy boat with adequate flotation (bulkheads or flotation bags), wearing a personal flotation device (PFD), dressed for immersion, paddle, bailer/pump, whistle, and light). Members may post a general query for events outside of the regular paddles but the details of those events should be communicated between interested individuals only. The organization of those trips is private and separate from SKLAKE.
There are no leaders, lifeguards, or anyone else responsible for the safety of those who choose to participate. Everyone is responsible for their own safety and is expected to use common sense and good judgment on and off the water. Neither SKLAKE nor any of its individual members can be held responsible for the safety of those attending these events.
