On Thurs, Oct 25, Peter Hall, distinguished planner from London, will speak
on what's in-store for Silicon Valley.
UPC is offering a discount as an incentive to get anyone to attend - all
they need do is stop by the dept. office:

http://www.sjsu.edu/depts/urbplan/UPC/peterhall.html

Spread the word - unfortunately, we don't have access to funds to pay for an
ad in the Daily,

Amy,
Thank you for sharing this excellent dialog between the 2 researchers.
I enjoyed reading it, esp. as a 'to-be-planner'- at SJSU.
I'm copying a listserve that alums, faculty, and some classmates belong to.

Hopefully everyone knows about the Peter Hall presentation tomorrow - not to
be missed if possible!

http://www.sjsu.edu/depts/urbplan/UPC/peterhall.html

UPC has permission to do some tabling - Dayana will be doing folding of
dept. brochures in the URBP lounge - if anyone is free to join her there, it
would be much appreciated.

At this event we will 'showcase' some of the posters that were recently
voted upon by UPC - for the Showcase for Learning event in Nov.

At 4:30pm, we'll be setting up at Le Petit Trianon,72 N. 5th St off Santa
Clara st.

Help would be appreciated there as well.

In any case, please come to the event which begins at 5:30pm.
It's not too late to secure the $6 discount by providing $14 check to "Giant
Creative Services" and giving it to Elisa, dept. secretary in WSQ 216.

See you manyana!

Irv

Dayana, on behalf of the Urban Planning Coalition - thank you for displaying
the Urban Planning dept. poster at the Peter Hall event last night.
As the dept. gets more exposure to the 'outside' or 'greater community',
we'll be viewed as a resource and perhaps see new enrollment from those who
had considered learning more about urban planning.
Thanks again,
Irv

Hello all,

Robin Lee and I invite anyone interested in discussing the recent California
Chapter/APA annual conference held last weekend in Sacramento to meet with
us Monday night at Pizza-a-go-go, 117 E. San Carlos, SJ - yes, we reserved
the Boardroom!

On Friday, David, Karli, Anthony, and myself held a "post-conference"
meeting to go over this event. The notes from our meeting are attached.

Robin was unable to attend, hence the Monday meeting -- and we thought, "Why
not invite anyone interested to join us?"

(Robin, Anthony, David, Karli and I attended the conference)

As some may know, we have a bit of a problem with Tuesday night UPC meetings
- some schedules just don't allow for it!!!!

So, if you are free, please join us!

In any case, please skim the notes if you can.

Irvin

William McDonough is an internationally respected designer and one of

“The Next Industrial Revolution. Time Magazine recently
recognized him as a “Hero for the Planet, stating that “his
utopianism is grounded in a unified philosophy that – in
demonstrable and practical ways – is changing the design of the

Recent award-winning projects for Gap Inc., Nike, Herman Miller,

Smart Growth in Action:
Supporting Good Development in Your Backyard

Saturday, December 8, 2001
10:00 AM- 3:00 PM
Niles Hall, Preservation Park, Oakland

Register at http://www.urbanecology.org/cities/cities.workshop.html, or
by
calling 510-251-6330.

Bay Area residents have demonstrated increasing support for urban growth

boundaries to reign in sprawl development. But imposing growth
boundaries
without corresponding changes in local land uses simply cuts off land
supply
and drives up costs. While "smart growth" and "livable communities" have

become popular buzzwords, the fact remains that land use policies that
introduce higher densities, reduce the amount of land used for parking,
or
move away from single-use zoning are highly controversial. Developers
still
find it easier to build in greenfield areas than in vacant or underused
lots
in older neighborhoods.

Urban Ecology is building an informed and effective constituency for
smart
growth. This one-day workshop will provide you with the tools to
evaluate
development projects for sustainable features and explain how to get
involved
in local land use issues.

Workshop Program

9:30-10:00 Registration

10:00-10:30 Welcome & Overview
Marci Riseman, Chairman, Board of Directors, Urban Ecology

and
social equity benefits to the region. Learn to use the standards and
review
checklist that UE has created to evaluate development projects in your
own
communities. Look past the rhetoric about smart growth and see what
makes
some projects better than others.

11:00-12:30 Case study: Small working groups
Apply the evaluation criteria to a sample development project and
discuss
whether you would support it. Discover the complexities and local
factors
that influence endorsements.

Lunch provided

12:30-1:00 Wrap-up Discussion
Discuss how your group made tradeoffs among conflicting values and where
you
drew the line in terms of supporting or opposing a project.

1:00-1:30 How to be an effective advocate
Doug Shoemaker, Non-profit Housing Association of Northern California
The Non-Profit Housing Association has successfully advocated for
affordable
housing in communities throughout the Bay Area. Find out what resources
they

worlds. Find out what motivates developers and why they have an interest
in
working with you. Learn how to get what you want by working effectively
with
developers

Subject: Job Announcement: Project Manager, Green Resource Center
salmar@...
Send Email Send Email

Job Description: Project Manager, Green Resource Center

Summary: Lead staff at Berkeley non-profit Green Resource Center,
managing
and implementing two new and innovative green building projects.
Full-time,
$20/hr position.

General Information:

The Green Resource Center (³GRC²) is a non-profit 501(c)3 corporation
that
provides public information about green, environmentally sustainable
building. It currently holds two contracts to provide two specific
programs
to support and promote green building activity in Berkeley and the Bay
Area.
The GRC¹s Project Manager will be the lead staff person for the GRC, and

will be in charge of supervising and, in many cases, implementing the
two
contracted programs, extending green building information to a large
sector
of homeowners and also interacting with a wide range of architects,
engineers, consultants, developers, and homeowners. Other opportunities
may
include general representation of the GRC to visiting groups such as
researchers, designers, developers, and government. Other staff at the
GRC
includes an office manager/ bookkeeper, a variety of volunteers, and
office
space is shared with the ³Smart Lights² program of Community Energy
Services
and with Architects/ Designers/ Planners for Social Responsibility. The
GRC
is located at 1931 Center St. in downtown Berkeley, near the Berkeley
BART.

Project Information:

The Berkeley¹s Best Builders Program (³BBB²) is the City of Berkeley¹s
first
Green Building program. It conducts outreach to developers of
commercial,
industrial, and multi-family residential buildings to encourage ³green²,
or
lower-environmental impact, building strategies and technologies. It
provides developers and architects with free consulting sessions with
technical experts with a broad range of specialties and produces
follow-up
reports that contain green building recommendations. The BBB program was

begun in March 2001 and is the first project of its kind in the country.
It
is administered by the Green Resource Center (³GRC²) under contract with
the
City of Berkeley, and funds for the program come from the State of
California Integrated Waste Management Board, Alameda County Waste
Management Authority, and Pacific Gas & Electric Co. Applicants are
encouraged to view the program web site at
www.greenresourcecenter.org/bbb.

The Ask an Expert program will provide ³hotline² green building advice
and
information to primarily residential builders as an extension of a
volunteer
service already offered by the GRC. It receives inquiries about green
building topics, and provides replies through a combination of FAQ
sheets,
basic research by project of volunteer staff, or referral to a pool of
local
experts in a variety of green building fields. The formal,
contract-based
version of the current hotline system has not yet been implemented; the
Project Manager will help launch this exciting new service to the Bay
Area.
Ask an Expert is administered by the Green Resource Center (³GRC²) under

contract with the City of Berkeley, and funds for the program come from
the
Alameda County Waste Management Authority.

Job Description:

- Project Management: oversee project budget, tracking of completed and
pending consulting schedules, reporting to city supervisors, project
billing.
- Program Coordination: developer and architect outreach, management of
expert consultants, coordination with other program staff and city staff

involved in green building promotion.
- Board Communication: work with supervising Board members in developing

current projects, report to Board on progress of work. Board members
handle
most contract matters with City and grant sponsors.
- Consulting Supervision: preparation of BBB consulting sessions,
attendance
at consulting sessions, review and compilation of consultant reports,
final
reporting to program clients (i.e. developers and architects) and to
city
staff
- Ask an Expert Hotline Operation: Track and maintain a database of
inquiries and responses, coordinate limited consultations with green
building experts
- Volunteer Coordination: Supervise work of BBB volunteers in staffing
Ask
and Expert hotline and in other office functions as available. Recruit
and
train additional volunteers.
- Program Outreach: promote hotline and BBB service in local media and
through green building web sites or other community locations.

  Skills and Requirements:

- Architectural content: ³Green² architectural or other design and
construction experience is a requirement. A professional degree in
architecture is preferred but not required. (Please note that while
familiarity with these issues is a requirement, this position is also an

excellent opportunity to learn even more about green issues and the
developing demand for green services, and to become familiar with a
variety
of experts in the field.)
- Non-profit project management: Familiarity with managing small-scale
projects (e.g. budget and reporting functions) is highly preferred, but
architectural or other experience may be substituted instead.
- Self-sufficient office skills: ability to work with existing project
files
in MS Word ,MS Excel, and MS Outlook on Macintosh systems is required.
Filemaker Pro experience is greatly preferred. Other office functions
include general project correspondence and record-keeping.

  Length of Employment & Pay:
- Interviews will begin as soon as possible. Job is to start Jan. 14 or
as
soon as possible, beginning with a two week training period.
- Job is full time 40 hrs/ week. A 4/5 time position would also be
considered.
- Pay will be $20/hr ($40,000/year). Unfortunately, no benefits can be
offered at this time outside of the rewarding nature of the work and the

opportunity to develop and become a valuable part of the exciting and
progressive green building community
- Program length is subject to extension of City contracts, but minimum
of
one year duration.

How to reply:

Please send a letter and resume by email (preferred) to
bbb@... or by fax to 510-845-9503.

perhaps of some interest...

Please read the Washington Monthly article by clicking on the URL below

Fixing a Fat Nation from Washington Monthly
http://www.washingtonmonthly.com/features/2001/0112.farley.cohen.html

I received this email from Gladwyn, a major bike and ped activisit in SJ.

It's a rather long article, and the relevant excerpt is pasted below, found
on page 12 of 16 (the font is large - it's not really that long an article)

Irv...

Building recreational bikeways and walking paths makes it easier for people
to exercise, but if we really want to make physical activity routine, those
paths and trails need to go somewhere useful---such as a store, school, or
workplace. That means creating more densely built mixed-use neighborhoods
which integrate residential and commercial real estate.

The benefits of this kind of design are already well documented. Studies
show that people living in the suburbs, whose neighborhoods are typically
less dense than urban areas, drive twice as far and walk and cycle one-third
as often as their city counterparts. In 1994, a San Francisco study found
that residents of traditional neighborhoods which had a mix of residential
and commercial uses made 16 percent of their journeys by bike or on foot,
whereas people who lived in the suburbs walked or biked only 10 percent
thereof. A Seattle study found that the activity breakdown could even be
tied to the age of one's neighborhood. People who lived in neighborhoods
built before 1947 went out on foot or bike more than three times every two
days. People in developments created after 1977 (just about the time the
obesity epidemic took off) dispensed with their cars just one-third as
often.

--------------------------------
The next paragraph is very interesting - it deals with building design -
specifically, where the stairs are located!
Usually we thing of 'green building' issues in terms of design, and other
related energy issues - here the slant is to get people to walk/climb rather
that use the elevator - for health reasons, not energy conservation reasons!

However, the 2 are closely related - one of the conclusions of the article
is that rather than focusing on metabolic reasons for obesity and other
health problems, we need to look at our environment - so you see, this
really is right up our alley.

database that will be used to identify jurisdictions by size, project rate of
growth and possibly other categories.
(3) Compiling and evaluating the survey results including compilation and
assessment by categories in the data base created from the Department of Finance
population information.

Needed skills include experience with general computer functions with specific
experience with the use of Microsoft Excel. Access to a computer is preferred.

The amount of time expected to be spent on this work will be approximately 15
hours a week. The hourly rate of pay for this work ranges from $13-$16/hour
