Internship Announcement

The City of Campbell, located in the heart of Santa Clara County, is
a community of over 38,000 people. Campbell is an urban city of 5.8
square miles where future development will be taking place on vacant
and under-utilized properties.

To this end, Campbell is in the process of creating and updating
several policy documents, including the City's Design Guidelines for
residential, commercial, and industrial development. We are looking
for an intern who can assist us with this project by completing the
following tasks:

-Identifying and documenting good design principles at work in
Campbell and other nearby cities;
-Collecting examples of user-friendly, practical guidelines being
used with success in other jurisdictions;
-Identifying awkward residential, commercial, and industrial
buildings, sites, and layouts in Campbell and writing guidelines
which will help future development avoid repeating old mistakes; and
-Assisting in the technical writing and review of draft guidelines.

The ideal Planning Intern will be interested in urban design and have
a background or be completing studies in art, architecture, urban and
regional planning, or landscape architecture. Although the City of
Campbell does not offer paid compensation, we provide the opportunity
for our intern to:

-Learn the process of local government and planning policy;
-Experience working in a city Planning Department;
-Participate in the creation and development of a highly regarded
planning document, and
-Coordinate an important project from beginning to end.

Work on the Design Guidelines Project will be finished by December
2001.
The ideal Planning Intern will be available twice a week for two to
four hours.

If you are interested in discussing this position, please call Kristi
Bascom at (408) 866-2142 or send an e-mail to:

Kristi - excellent posting for the UPC. Thanks!
FYI, we've 'cleansed' the UPC bulletin board in the lounge area - I
encourage anyone to stop by and place formal listings there - I'll be
posting this announcement under employment/internships, but the official
notices are more eye-catchy.
I posted our last meeting notice there and new students have asked about the
UPC after reading from the board!

There are openings in SJSU class, Urban Planning 123, Historic Preservation.
It meets Wednesday evenings, 6:30 - 9 pm. Instructors are a dynamite duo,
the preservation officers from the County and the City of San Jose, Dana Peak
and Courtney Damkroger. They have a wonderful list of outside speakers which
will address issues such as national, state and local historic properties and
processes.

Just got my 2001 Official CCAPA Ballot in the mail and was surprised to see
Quantitative Methods instructor Hing Wong on the ballot!

My Urbp 211 class was just on a field trip to ABAG where Hing made a
presentation on Regional Planning in the Bay Area (followed by a
presentation by Carol Kuester/MTC Sr. Transportation Planner).

Hing is a candidate for Director, California Planning Foundation. There are
either 3 or 4 open seats, depending upon whether the bylaws amendment
passes. There are 6 candidates running.

Although it's not listed on his bio, Hing was UPC co-vice chair, 1994-95.
During our on-going clean-up of the dept. lounge, Karli, current UPC Vice
President, located 2 editions of The UPC Planner (1994, 95)that make for
most interesting reading for the current UPC officers and members. Nice
newsletters, real nice!

Remember, ballots must be postmarked by Thurs, September 20!

Hi all,

Yes, it's that "Third Tues of the month", so UPC shall meet at Pizza
A-GO-GO, San Carlos St. by Third St., SJ.
Most important item is discussion of sub-committee structure -
please consider joining one, or two...

While it's not on the agenda, I was hoping we'd do a brief moment of silence
for respect to those who died last Tuesday.

Due to a prior error, we have the "Boardroom" till 7:15pm, if we need to
continue we can simply move to a table in the main dining area.
While the meeting starts at 6, please don't worry about arriving late - we
fully expect many to show up by 6:30 because of class scheduling.

Future meetings will start at 6:30pm.

See you Tuesday,

Irvin

Subject: Smart Growth Strategy/ Regional Livability Footprint Project

Hello,

Wanted to send out some information about the Smart Growth Strategy/ Regional Livability Footprint Project.  I've pasted the text of an e-mail received from the Bay Area Transportation and Land Use Coalition (BATLUC) that helps explain the importance of the "Smart Growth" workshops that will be happening in each of the nine Bay Area counties.  Keep in mind that BATLUC is one of the many groups that will be participating in the workshops, along with elected officials, developers, community members, environmentalists, community organizers, etc.

For more info on what the heck this project's about, check out the ABAG web page through the following link:

As a side note, several SJSU MUP students are helping facilitate the small group exercises that are the highlight of the workshop, so you may see some familiar faces.

This is an exciting opportunity to participate in developing a vision for the future of the Bay Area, particularly as it relates to the location and quantities of future housing and jobs.  Do feel free to e-mail me if you have any questions that cannot be answered by checking out the web page and/or info below.

Thanks!

Subject: What can planners do?
salmar@...
Send Email Send Email

To:      SJSU MUP Students and Alumni
From:  Dayana Salazar

A week after the September 11th tragedy, a student in URBP 201 raised a poignant question:
What are we doing here, learning about planning, when all these horrific events are happening out there in the world?

His question may also be understood as: How can we, planners, respond to such events?
There are many ways in which we can begin to address this question as individuals.

In the meantime, the American Planning Association (APA) has begun a professional dialogue about the subject.

Details below.

Subject: Planning After September 11
     Date:      Fri, 28 Sep 2001 15:26:11 -0500
     From:     apamem-l-admin@...
 Reply-To:   ccheski@...
       To:       "'apamem-l@...'" <apamem-l@...>

Dear APA Member:

The American Planning Association and its professional institute, The
American Institute of Certified Planners, expresses its sympathy to those
affected by the horrific tragedies of September 11. To the victims, their
families, and their friends, we offer our heartfelt thoughts and prayers. We
are all strengthened by the many acts of heroism and kindness shown by
caring people and by the continuing contributions so many are making in
service to others.

Our community of Planners has offered assistance to those who must now turn
to the long process of recovery and reconstruction. Many of our members will
be called upon for their personal contributions of talent and expertise
through APA or through others' requests in the coming months. For members
and friends, we will be offering a variety of opportunities for dialogue,
information, and contributions. Visit <http://www.planning.org/abtapa/11sept01.htm>
to share in APA's resources for Planning After September 11.
Some of them are listed below.

Please join us in the task of building community in America and throughout
the world.

Paul Farmer, AICP
Executive Director

-- Moderated Discussion --

We invite our members and friends to join colleagues in a thoughtful and
respectful discussion of the planning and public policy issues being debated
in the aftermath of the recent tragedy.

Click on <http://forums.siteforums.com/~apa> to register to participate in
the online discussions. The forum is available 24 hours a day, and APA's
moderators will participate daily. Enter at any time to post messages and
read other planners' ideas and opinions. You need not be a member of APA to
participate, but please address all postings to the topics at hand.

We are pleased that several members of our community have agreed to lead and
moderate our discussion:

Edward Blakely,  Dean of the Robert J. Milano Graduate School of Management
and Urban Policy, New School University in New York

Amy Helling, AICP, Associate Professor of Public Administration and Urban
Studies in the Andrew Young School of Policy Studies at Georgia State
University.

David S. Sawicki, AICP, Professor of City and Regional Planning and Public
Policy at Georgia Tech.

Kenneth Topping, FAICP, an expert in planning for post-disaster recovery and
reconstruction and the former planning director for Los Angeles.

-- Planners Day on the Hill and Fall Leadership Meetings --

These events will continue as scheduled, although our discussions will
include the events of September 11 and the aftermath. APA has been assured
by congressional offices that our members are very much encouraged to
continue with our visits. Our message of building vital communities now and
into the future should be consistent with short term priorities. And
planners have a special expertise that will add value to the emerging
national policy dialogue on so many issues of human settlement and other
topics.

-- APA and AICP Resources --

APA and AICP resources are available to community leaders, citizens, news
media, and anyone who wants to know more about the role planning plays in
responding to an emergency.

UPC is offering a discount as an incentive to get anyone to attend - all
they need do is stop by the dept. office:

Amy,
Thank you for sharing this excellent dialog between the 2 researchers.
I enjoyed reading it, esp. as a 'to-be-planner'- at SJSU.
I'm copying a listserve that alums, faculty, and some classmates belong to.

Hopefully everyone knows about the Peter Hall presentation tomorrow - not to
be missed if possible!

http://www.sjsu.edu/depts/urbplan/UPC/peterhall.html

UPC has permission to do some tabling - Dayana will be doing folding of
dept. brochures in the URBP lounge - if anyone is free to join her there, it
would be much appreciated.

At this event we will 'showcase' some of the posters that were recently
voted upon by UPC - for the Showcase for Learning event in Nov.

At 4:30pm, we'll be setting up at Le Petit Trianon,72 N. 5th St off Santa
Clara st.

Help would be appreciated there as well.

In any case, please come to the event which begins at 5:30pm.
It's not too late to secure the $6 discount by providing $14 check to "Giant
Creative Services" and giving it to Elisa, dept. secretary in WSQ 216.

See you manyana!

Irv

Dayana, on behalf of the Urban Planning Coalition - thank you for displaying
the Urban Planning dept. poster at the Peter Hall event last night.
As the dept. gets more exposure to the 'outside' or 'greater community',
we'll be viewed as a resource and perhaps see new enrollment from those who
had considered learning more about urban planning.
Thanks again,
Irv

Hello all,

Robin Lee and I invite anyone interested in discussing the recent California
Chapter/APA annual conference held last weekend in Sacramento to meet with
us Monday night at Pizza-a-go-go, 117 E. San Carlos, SJ - yes, we reserved
the Boardroom!

On Friday, David, Karli, Anthony, and myself held a "post-conference"
meeting to go over this event. The notes from our meeting are attached.

Robin was unable to attend, hence the Monday meeting -- and we thought, "Why
not invite anyone interested to join us?"

(Robin, Anthony, David, Karli and I attended the conference)

As some may know, we have a bit of a problem with Tuesday night UPC meetings
- some schedules just don't allow for it!!!!

So, if you are free, please join us!

In any case, please skim the notes if you can.

Irvin
