Kim Wilkie
Kim Wilkie Associates, United Kingdom

Kim Wilkie had an intense introduction to landscape. He grew up in the
Malaysian jungle and Iraqi desert before being sent to school in
southern England. Having studied history at Oxford and landscape
architecture at the University of California, Berkeley, Kim set up his
landscape studio in London in 1989. He is fascinated by the link
between land and culture and between memory and imagination. Kim
continues to lecture on design; writes optimistically about land and
place; and meddles in various national committees on landscape and
environmental policy in the UK, which have included the Mayor of
London’s Public Realm Advisory Group and the Royal Parks Advisory
Board. His book Led by the Land was published in 2012. The practice
has a reputation for bold new designs in complex settings and has just
completed the Orpheus landform at Boughton. In London, projects
include the Chelsea Barracks redevelopment, the Thames Landscape
Strategy, the V&A Museum Garden, Hyde Park Corner and projects for
Imperial College. Abroad, Kim is working for New York University at
Villa La Pietra in Florence and for Longwood Gardens in Philadelphia.

Led by the Land explores the relationship between land, water and
life; a subtle cohabitation that creates landscape. Kim Wilkie will
speak about his philosophy of land and human settlement, illustrating
the ideas with examples of his work. Alongside all the practical
issues of surviving on the planet, it is important to infuse a spirit
of joy detonated by memory and imagination. Kim will show how ancient
traditions of sculpting the land can inspire new forms and meanings at
the same time as creating habitats for wildlife and spaces for
theatre.

Kenneth Harlan Simmons Lecture Series: John Liu
Date: Tuesday, November 6, 2012 (6:30 p.m. - 6:30 p.m.)
Location: 106 Wurster Hall, UC Berkeley

John K.C. Liu, Chair and Executive Director
Building and Planning Research Foundation, National Taiwan University

The CED Alumni and Students of Color are pleased to announce that one
of our founding members, John K.C. Liu, PhD 1980, will be the first
speaker in the Ken Simmons Lecture series on Community Design and
Development. John will discuss his work as head of the Building and
Planning Research Foundation at the National Taiwan University in
Taipei . The Foundation adheres to four working principles: training
of “professional-generalists”, collaborative work, social justice, and
user participation. To date, the Foundation has trained over 300
professionals who use their skills as architects and planners to
assist communities in planning and development. For the work of the
Foundation over the past 22 years, John recently received the 2012
Taipei City Culture Award.

Public Service Community Planning and Design
John was born in China, grew up in Taiwan and India, did his
undergraduate work at the Rhode Island School of Design and the Cooper
Union for the Advancement of Science and Art, graduate work at the
University of Washington and Pennsylvania State University before
receiving his PhD in Architecture from the University of California,
Berkeley in 1980. While at Cal, John, along with Ken Simmons, Sara
Ishikawa, Halim Abdelhalim, and Virgus Streets formed the Community
Design Collaborative in Oakland focusing on professional planning and
architecture services to disadvantaged communities in the Bay Area,
working such projects as D.Q. University, the Black Repertory Theater
in Berkeley, the Berkeley Free Clinic, the Oakland Downtown
Redevelopment Plan, the Jack London Square master plan, San Francisco
Chinatown Housing for the Elderly, and Yerba Buena West Public
Housing, etc.

In 1990 John returned to Taiwan and founded the Building and Planning
Research Foundation at the National Taiwan University. The Foundation
serves public agencies from the central government to the local
townships in planning projects ranging from policy analysis on
national land planning, county general plans, new-town planning,
issue-based planning including historical preservation, tourism
industry, and water management. Community projects include
regeneration of rural townships, preservation of historic streets and
towns, urban neighborhood revitalization. Design projects include
schools, theaters, hospitals, university campuses, public parks, the
restoration of historic buildings, passive-solar housing, and
facilities for indigenous tribes.

*Title: * Are Inclusive and Just Cities Possible? Lessons After the Great
Recession, from America and Abroad

Xavier de Souza Briggs is an American sociologist and planner, known for
his work on social capital, civic capacity, and community building, as well
as the concept of the "geography of opportunity," which addresses the
consequences of race and class segregation for the well-being and life
prospects of the disadvantaged. In January 2009, Briggs went on a public
service leave from MIT, appointed by President Barack Obama to become
Associate Director of the White House Office of Management and Budget. At
OMB, he oversaw policy and budget for six cabinet agencies (Housing and
Urban Development, Treasury, Commerce, Transportation, Justice, and
Homeland Security) as well as the Small Business Administration, General
Services Administration, and other agencies, with a discretionary budget
totaling approximately $225 billion per year. He returned to the MIT
faculty in August 2011.

He is Associate Professor of Sociology and Urban Planning (with tenure) in
the Department of Urban Studies and Planning at the Massachusetts Institute
of Technology (MIT). He is also a former faculty member of Harvard
University’s Kennedy School of Government. He was a presidential appointee
in the Clinton Administration, serving as a senior policy official at the
US Department of Housing and Urban Development.

Please join ULI’s East Bay Committee and three distinguished apartment
developers for an informal panel discussion with Bob Burke of
Greenheart Land Company to understand the different perspectives of a
small private builder, a large private developer as well as a large
REIT on the current Bay Area trends in Apartment development. Panel
questions will include: Will the market last through 2013 or will the
lack of job growth outside of Silicon Valley and San Francisco catch
up to the outlying markets. How will thousands of new units in Silicon
Valley affect that submarket? Will the surge in construction starts
increase hard costs to point where some projects become infeasible?
Will the resurgence of the For Sale market reduce the number of
renters as more people realize it may be cheaper to buy than rent? The
Panel will also explore the ever-changing financing market as well the
investment market for apartments. These topics along with audience
questions will be part of this very lively discussion.

the current market conditions.

The Learn from the Best (LFTB) Guest Mentor program series has been
one of the most successful programs in the San Francisco District
Council since it was launched in the fall of 2005. LFTB was created
by the San Francisco Young Leaders Group (YLG) and is now being
implemented nationally by YLG chapters across the country. The
premise is simple: take 100 Young Leaders and 10-15 senior regional
real estate leaders, pair them into groups of 10, and let them have a
conversation for 20 to 25 minutes about informal topics such as tips
on success, personal anecdotes, the state of the industry, tricks of
the trade, trends, etc. Young Leaders rotate tables a total of 3
times, allowing for a broad mix of insights. The result is a mutually
rewarding experience, but one which primarily allows the next
generation of real estate professionals to learn from recognized
industry leaders.

The public is invited to celebrate on Friday the completion of the BART
tunnel constructed under Lake Elizabeth in Central Park. The construction
is part of the ongoing BART project that is expected to extend subway
tracks 5.4 miles from the existing Fremont station to a new station in the
city's Warm Springs district.

The event is scheduled from 9:30 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the north end of the
park, at 1320 Stevenson Blvd. It will feature a "subway walk," in which
tour groups consisting of 20 people will take a 10-minute tour through the
tunnel, BART spokeswoman Luna Salaver said.

The tunnel remains an active construction site, so attendees must be at
least 12-years-old and wearing sturdy walking shoes and pants -- high
heels, open-toe shoes, skirts and dresses are prohibited. Attendees will
be escorted down four flights of stairs before touring the tunnel, Salaver
said.

Each person touring the tunnel will receive a commemorative button that
reads, "I walked the Warm Springs Subway."

Here’s a question on many of our minds: will high speed rail become a reality?

TransForm believes that high speed rail has the potential to reinforce
cities as the hubs of our economy, relieve congested roads, plus help
California meet clean air and greenhouse gas reduction goals. Yet it
also has an enormous price tag, is being slapped by lawsuits and has
generated opposition in cities and farms alike. (Read more in
TransForm's June 2012 report).

Join Dan Richard, Chair of the California High Speed Rail Authority,
and special guests for a lively discussion on overcoming some of the
most confounding issues facing the project and addressing community
concerns. Sponsored by TransForm and the California Association of
Environmental Professionals, this event will be on Thursday, November

California's High Speed Rail: Lessons from Asia

8 November 2012
5:30pm - 8:00pm

K&L Gates, LLP, 4 Embarcadero Center, Suite 1200, San Francisco
$10 Asia Society members, $15 non-members

While high-speed trains have been zooming across Europe and Asia for
decades, after years of contentious debate, the state of California
has approved the first phase of construction for the much anticipated
— yet controversial — high-speed rail project linking Los Angeles and
San Francisco. The nation's first high speed rail, and one of its
largest public infrastructure projects, will cover 800 miles of track
and reach speeds of up to 220 mph, allowing passengers to travel from
LA to SF in just 2.5 hours. Although it is cheered on by many who see
it as a boon for business, commerce, and a step toward environmental
sustainability, others view it as project "doomed to fail" when the
state is on such shaky fiscal legs.

This program will look to models in Asia, such as Japan's Shinkansen,
as well as those in Korea and China to understand how high speed rail
systems have impacted travel, business, and livability. Will such an
undertaking in California bring about similar changes, or is it simply
a waste of public funding? Please join our expert panel for a
discussion of these and other questions.

Speakers include Steve Boland, Associate Project Planner,
Nelson/Nygaard Consulting Associates, Rod Diridon, Executive Director,
Mineta Transportation Institute, John Eddy, Principal, America's
Infrastructure Practice Chair, Arup (moderator), and Tian Feng,
District Architect, SF Bay Area Rapid Transit (BART).
