Research Assistant, Cities and People Project

Posted: 09 Aug 2011 05:00 PM PDT

The Research Assistant will do research on the interaction of people
with the urban built environment, to help lower carbon emissions by
creating walkable cities. This work will be done in collaboration with
a major global company engaged with building the urban environment, so
will be a rich combination of the theoretical and the practical.
Research questions may include: • How do people in cities
(residents, workers and visitors) use the spaces, products and
amenities? How does this use change when the spaces, products, and
amenities are altered to reduce carbon emissions? • How do the
location and type of buildings, urban design and transit
infrastructure contribute to goals for human wellbeing such as meeting
daily and weekly needs, and promoting opportunities for socializing?
• What mixture of office, retail, residential uses within cities, at
what density, and over how much area, promotes these goals? • What
are the respective roles of retrofit and new construction? Do people
interact with retrofit vs. new construction differently, and if so,
how? • How do buildings, urban design and infrastructure interact to
promote human wellbeing while reducing the overall carbon footprint?
Answering these questions will lay the foundation for the development
of leading edge models for elements such as the siting, design,
amenities, size, etc. of buildings and surrounding areas that fit with
larger urban planning goals to increase environmental and social
sustainability. This will initially involve a survey of existing
research into this area. From there, researchers will create a
framework for examining key ways in which people interact with the
built environment (housing, plazas, retail, entertainment,
transportation, etc.) and explore how their interactions promote or
detract from the creation of low-carbon cities. This will be done with
reviews of relevant printed and online information and interviews of
experts to construct a baseline of best practices, followed by an
examination of how these could be applied to actual urban projects,
either completed or underway. The Institute is a nonprofit
organization, which works closely with several academic departments at
UC Berkeley, but is not a part of the University. Work space for the
Research Assistant will be available in our offices at the David
Brower Center in downtown Berkeley. More information about the
evolving work of the Institute can be found at

----------------------------------------
*Urbanized* is a feature-length documentary about the design of cities,
which looks at the issues and strategies behind urban design and features
some of the worlds foremost architects, planners, policymakers, builders,
and thinkers. Over half the worlds population now lives in an urban area,
and 75% will call a city home by 2050. But while some cities are
experiencing explosive growth, others are shrinking. The challenges of
balancing housing, mobility, public space, civic engagement, economic
development, and environmental policy are fast becoming universal concerns.
Yet much of the dialogue on these issues is disconnected from the public
domain.

More information and tickets could be found on their website.
http://urbanizedfilm.com/

The screening is in San Francisco on Wednesday, September 21st at 10:00 pm,
which they added because the one at 8:00 pm sold out. If people are
interested, they can get tickets on the website.

The Drs. Julian + Raye Richardson Apartmentsdeveloped by Mercy

permanent supportive housing for a very-low-income, formerly homeless
population.

This open house will feature two tours of the buildingat 10:15am and
11:15amled by architects Amit Price Patel AIA LEED AP and David Baker
FAIA LEED AP. There will be no additional tour opportunities after the
residents move in.

The residents entrance on Fulton Street features a spacious, secure
lobby with a reception station. Beyond the lobby, the south-facing
courtyard frames an expansive existing murala paint-and-glass mosaic
of dancers on the side of the Performing Arts garage. Connected by an
open-air stair, four levels of fully equipped studio apartments sit
atop neighborhood-serving retail and surround the private landscaped
courtyard.

Other supportive uses include an on-site medical and counseling
center, a residents' lounge, and a prominent flexible-use community
room. The rooftop deck includes a living roof, allotment garden plots,
solar arrays, and City Hall views. The corner retail space is slated
for a bakery featuring a work-training program for residents, and
other ground-level retail spaces maintain an active street edge and
connect the building to the Hayes Street retail corridor.

Formerly a parking lot on the southeast corner of Fulton and Gough
streets, Richardson Apartments has risen on one of the sites freed for
development by the demolition of the collapsed Central Freeway.

on Saturday, September 10 from 10am-noon, with 2 architect-led tours
at 10:15 and 11:15.

This is the last time that the building will be open for a tour, due

Policy Internship

Posted: 02 Sep 2011 10:48 AM PDT

Greenbelt Alliance seeks a motivated individual to provide policy
research support for our campaigns for open space protection and
better city planning throughout the San Francisco Bay Area.

Greenbelt Alliance is the San Francisco Bay Area’s advocate for open
spaces and vibrant places. Founded in 1958, we work to make the Bay
Area a better place to live by protecting the region’s greenbelt and
improving the livability of our cities and towns. We have helped
protect over 1.1 million acres of farmlands, parks, watersheds and
other open space. We are also a leading advocate for the creation of
livable communities: walkable neighborhoods near transit, shops, and
jobs, with homes people can afford.

Responsibilities

The Policy Intern will provide policy support to Greenbelt Alliance
campaign leads. Tasks may include:

• GIS-based research –
for example, what is the historic rate of urbanization of land in the
Bay Area compared to population growth?

 • Policy research –
for example, what new zoning tools could Sonoma County implement to
prevent rural parcelization and sprawl development?

 • GIS
system development – updating and improving Greenbelt Alliance’s
GIS data layers
• Emissions analysis – using the URBEMIS
software package to calculate estimated
greenhouse gas emissions
from development proposals
• Analysis of public documents – for
example, reviewing draft Specific Plans and
Environmental Impact
Reports (EIRs) and drafting formal comment letters

Commitment

This position requires a 2 to 5 day a week commitment
for at least three months starting immediately; a six-month commitment
is strongly preferred. Interns are expected to adhere to a regular
schedule, but working hours are flexible and interns can generally
choose this schedule. Most work must be completed between 9am and 5pm
weekdays in the Greenbelt Alliance main office in downtown San
Francisco. This location is BART and MUNI accessible and public
transportation is encouraged. The position is unpaid. Travel
reimbursement is available for interns working more than 30 hours a
week who can demonstrate financial need.

Talents/Skills
Desired

Greenbelt Alliance is seeking candidates with strong
quantitative and qualitative research skills, strong writing skills,
and a friendly and professional demeanor. Knowledge of urban planning
or land use policies is highly desired. Ideal candidates should have
strong organizational skills and an ability to work independently to
meet deadlines. Excel and one year of GIS experience are required.
Graduate students and recent college graduates are encouraged to
apply, but advanced undergraduates will also be considered.

Benefits

This position is an excellent opportunity to have an
impact on land use decisions throughout the Bay Area. The intern will
meet professionals from around the region and will learn about
environmental and urban planning issues while developing a network of
contacts and references in the non-profit field. When applying for
future jobs, interns will be able to point to tangible results from
their work and describe discrete projects that they led.

To
Apply
Please send a resume and cover letter to Adam Garcia, Policy
Researcher, at agarcia@.... Please include the date you
would be available to start work. Applications will be evaluated as
they arrive; the position is open until filled.
Greenbelt Alliance
values a diverse workplace and is an equal opportunity employer.
People of color, women, people of all sexual orientation, trans and
gender non-conforming people, and individuals of diverse backgrounds
are encouraged to apply.
