Santa Clara County Facilities and Fleet Department has a paid internship
position available in the Climate Change and Sustainability Program. If you are
interested, please send a letter of interest - why this position fits in with
your course of study and career path and why you would be a strong candidate -
and a copy of your transcript (unofficial is fine). Please email these to me by
May 10, as I will be moving quickly to hire the right person. Candidates
selected from this pool will be sent an application and may be offered an
opportunity to interview.
We have funding for about 400 hours of work, beginning in May or June if you are
available part time, and going through the summer as full time.

The intern will be assisting the Climate Change and Sustainability Manager on a
number of projects relating to doing an update of our Greenhouse Gas Emissions
Inventory for Operations and Facilities and the preliminary steps of an updated
Climate Action Plan for Operations and Facilities. You are not expected to know
the protocol for doing an inventory, but to bring strong basic skills as noted
below.

The skills needed to do this position well are

* Ability to perform accurate and reliable calculations using Excel and
the ability to spot answers that are not reasonable. A background in engineering
or scientific research is appropriate, but not required.

*         Strong writing skills.

* Ability to understand and apply complex protocol methods for
inventories.

* Good personal interaction skills, as there will be data that needs to
be acquired from different departments.

* Ability to solve problems, identify missing data and suggest
solutions.

In addition, an interest in energy, water and climate issues is key. In addition
to the climate inventory work, there may be opportunities to assist with
developing a Water Plan, working on the LEED EBOM program (LEED for Existing
Buildings Operations and Maintenance), and supporting interdepartmental meetings
on climate change goals and objectives.
Thank you,
Jill

Alex MacLean

The American Landscape at the Tipping Point

May 5 - July 2, 2011
Reception for the Artist: Thursday, May 5,  5:30 - 7:30

SAN FRANCISCO – The Robert Koch Gallery is pleased to present its
first exhibition of photographs by Alex MacLean, who for over thirty
years has been documenting a changing American landscape, and the
complex relationship between its natural and constructed environments.
Internationally recognized for his aerial photography and ecological
commitment, the works in The American Landscape at the Tipping Point
bear eloquent witness to the marks and transformations humanity has
wrought on the American landscape.

Trained as an architect at Harvard University’s Graduate School of
Design, MacLean earned a Masters Degree in Architecture and also
became grounded in urban design through his work on projects in the
Unites States and Europe for the past 30 years. Drawing on his
background in architecture and urban design, MacLean’s aerial lens
captures the proliferation of parking lots, housing developments, and
agricultural fields that embody the profound impact of human
habitation on the Earth. "I seek out odd occurrences in the physical
landscape that serve as metaphors for shifts in societal values. These
images tell important stories about our cultural standards." For
decades, MacLean has used his camera to document this American
obsession with development, and the extent to which we have
manipulated and transformed the environment to suit our needs.
MacLean’s images are aesthetically seductive, defined by bold color,
texture, and pattern, but offer a warning. His photographs depict a
relationship that has reached a tipping point, an American way of life
that is no longer environmentally sustainable.

MacLean’s photographs have been exhibited widely in the United States,
Canada, Europe and Asia, at such major institutions as the Centre
Pompidou, the Menil Collection, Houston, and the Museum of
Contemporary Photography, Chicago. He has won numerous awards,
including the 2009 CORINE International Book Award for OVER: The
American Landscape at the Tipping Point, the American Academy of
Rome’s Prix de Rome in Landscape Architecture for 2003-2004, and
grants from foundations such as the National Endowment for the Arts
and Graham Foundation. MacLean’s work is the subject of ten
monographs.

"We All Want the Same Thing:: Results from a Roadway Design Survey of
Pedestrians, Drivers, Bicyclists, and Transit Users in the Bay Area"

Lecture | May 13 | 12-1 p.m. | SafeTREC, 2nd floor conference room
Location: 2614 Dwight Way, Berkeley, CA
Speaker/Performer: Rebecca Sanders Carlton, Safetrec
Sponsor: Safetrek

Pedestrians, bicyclists, drivers, and public transit users all desire
similar design features on local streets. At least, that is what a
recent intercept survey of Bay Area residents found with regard to a
major urban corridor. This paper elaborates on the findings from this
survey, which was conducted as part of a larger effort to establish
performance measures for pedestrian and bicyclist safety and mobility
for the California Department of Transportation. The survey was
conducted to understand traveler preferences for street design to
increase perceived traffic safety, walkability, and bikability, as
well as encourage economic vitality through increased visits.

When asked an open-ended question about what street improvements could
be added to make them feel safer from traffic along the survey
corridor, all respondent groups requested the same top five
improvements. Pedestrians, drivers, and bicyclists all named bicycle
lanes as the top traffic safety improvement for the corridor (ranked
fifth by public transit respondents), followed for nearly all groups
by improved pedestrian crossings (ranked third by bicyclists). The
remaining top five elements, while the same for all groups, were
ordered slightly differently among them: slowing traffic/improving
driver behavior, installing more traffic lights, and increasing the
amount of street lighting. A similar open-ended question asking about
street improvements that could encourage more visits to the corridor
included a preference among all user groups for increased street trees
and landscaping, street lighting, a bicycle lane, and public
art/beautification.

These findings strongly suggest that traditional ideas of nuanced
planning for various user groups may miss opportunities to create an
urban street environment that is pleasing to all user groups by
focusing efforts on a handful of design ideas. In addition, there is
evidence that design features previously thought to benefit only one
user group, such as bicycle lanes, may have unmeasured benefits for
other user groups like pedestrians and drivers. In an era in which
"complete streets" principles are becoming more common and accepted,
these findings offer encouraging evidence that this concept is on the
right track to increase perceptions of traffic safety and encourage
more lively streets through attracting users. These results also offer
evidence of targeted actions that could encourage more walking and
bicycling along local streets, helping to achieve goals of increased
physical activity among the general population.

Program Manager

The Portola Neighborhood Steering Committee (PNSC) is seeking a
Program Manager to work at least half, but up to full time. The
Program Manager is responsible for implementing a comprehensive
economic development program in San Francisco’s Portola District. This
work is guided by an action plan that is a working blueprint of a
comprehensive and community-led effort to revitalize the San Bruno
Avenue commercial corridor. The action plan includes activities of the
PNSC and partners to strengthen the physical, social, and economic
character of the neighborhood by improving safety and cleanliness,
coordinating beautification projects, recruiting businesses to fill
vacant retail space, planning community events, and promoting the
district within the neighborhood and beyond. The Program Manager will
work closely within the community to develop the action plan annually,
and identify volunteers and partners to implement activities in the
plan. The Program Manager is the key staff member to lead and provide
support to the PNSC, a group of committed neighborhood leaders,
residents and merchants. In addition to implementing the action plan,
the Program Manager is responsible for developing strong relationships
with merchants and residents, recruiting and managing volunteers,
preparing program materials such as flyers and quarterly newsletters,
and identifying resources – volunteers and funding – to implement
additional activities. The PNSC is a project of Community Initiatives
and is funded by Bay Area Local Initiatives Support Corporation and
the San Francisco Office of Economic and Workforce Development.

*Intern Description* San Jose PARK(ing) Day Coordinator

Summer Internship Position

Greenbelt Alliance, the San Francisco Bay Area’s advocate for open spaces
and vibrant places, seeks an intern to help coordinate PARK(ing) Day 2011 in
San Jose. This position will run a minimum of four months. PARK(ing) Day is
Friday, September 16, 2011.

*Position Summary*

The San Jose PARK(ing) Day Coordinator will coordinate activities around
PARK(ing) Day in downtown San Jose on Friday, September 16, 2011.

PARK(ing) Day is an annual event on the third Friday in September where
artists, activists, and citizens collaborate to temporarily transform
metered parking spaces into temporary public parks. PARK(ing) Day was
originally created in 2005 by Rebar, a San Francisco art and design
collective. Since 2005, the project has blossomed into a worldwide
grassroots movement: *PARK(ing) Day* 2009 included more than 700 “PARK”
installations in more than 140 cities on six continents.

Last year, there were six parking spots transformed into temporary parks in
downtown San Jose. This year we would like to grow this event even more. A
Greenbelt Alliance intern organized this event in San Jose last year and
created a document outlining all the steps required to make PARK(ing) Day
2011 a success.

*Key Responsibilities*

    - Coordinate a steering committee of interested PARK(ing) Day
participants to help with outreach and adoption of temporary ‘parklets’
    - Oversee promotion of event through use of flyers, social media, word of
    mouth, e-lists and more.
    - Work with City of San Jose on logistics for event
    - Design Greenbelt Alliance’s ‘park-let’
    - Coordinate day-of event activities

*Qualifications*

This is an excellent opportunity for students interested in urban and
regional planning, public policy or environmental studies. The ideal
candidate will have strong organizational skills and the ability to
plan/execute events; facilitate meetings and build excellent working
relationships with community groups and policy makers; and work
independently as well as part of a team.

*Compensation*

This is an unpaid internship.

*To Apply*

Please send a resume to mbeasley@... with subject line: PARK(ing)
Day Internship.

*About Greenbelt Alliance*

Greenbelt Alliance is the San Francisco Bay Area’s advocate for open spaces
and vibrant places. Founded in 1958, we work to make the Bay Area a better
place to live by protecting the region’s greenbelt and improving the
region’s cities and towns. We have helped protect over 1.1 million acres of
farmlands, parks, watersheds, and other open space. Greenbelt Alliance is
also a leading advocate for creating livable communities: walkable
neighborhoods near transit, shops, and jobs, with homes people can afford.
