housing community in the Bay Area and around the state - the conference is
always well-attended and our members are great conversationalists!

"A new tool for congestion pricing"

Over the past three years, economist and transportation activist Charles
Komanoff has created a traffic-analysis model that calculates the impact
of congestion tolls and transit fares on New York City traffic speeds,
gridlock costs and agency revenues at different times of day. In its June
issue, Wired magazine pronounced Komanoff’s model a “masterpiece.” Please

prospects for implementing congestion pricing in New York and San

Fall 2010 Internship, Trails and Greenways Program, Western Region, San
Francisco - Posted 07/22/2010

About Our Internship Programs

Rails-to-Trails Conservancy (RTC) is the nation's leading advocate for
trails and the only national organization devoted to converting unused
railroad lines to multi-use trails. RTC is dedicated to connecting people
and communities by creating a nationwide network of public trails. With
headquarters in Washington, D.C., and offices in California, Florida, Ohio
and Pennsylvania, RTC is a nonprofit public charity carrying out a program
of technical assistance and public education.

RTC is looking for interns interested in working on environmental and
public policy issues. Interns will provide assistance to the program,
development, communications and the administrative department. Job
assignments will consist of professional and administrative support.
Interns will participate as full-time staff members including attending
staff meetings, retreats and social gatherings. Hours are flexible to
accommodate class schedule(s) or other commitments. Generally hours are
four days a week from 9:00 a.m. to 5:00 p.m. or 9:30 a.m. to 5:30 p.m.

Summary of this Opportunity

Program Internships are full- or part-time. As a small office of three,
opportunities abound for volunteers to get involved in a multitude of
projects and to assist staff to make it feel like we are really an office
of 20! Volunteer assignments are flexible depending upon a volunteer's
interests and skills. A sample of current office needs includes: Trail &
Greenway project and policy research, fielding and answering technical
assistance calls, in-house library and resource development, grant writing
and research, developing educational workshop programs, and fundraising
strategies etc.; project support (e.g. helping with community outreach,
public meetings). General administrative support (clerical, office
management, etc.). Let us know what you want to do!

Benefits

Positions are unpaid though interns will enjoy the benefits of working in
downtown San Francisco, in the casual but professional Western Regional
Office. The office is conveniently located in San Francisco's financial
district, just blocks from bustling Market Street and the landmark,
pyramid-shaped Transamerica building. Surrounded by professional offices,
retail stores, restaurants and galleries, the office is serviced by
multiple MUNIlines and the Montgomery Street BART station. Nearby cultural
attractions include the Contemporary Jewish Museum, the SF Museum of
Modern Art, the Museum of African Diaspora, Yerba Buena Gardens, Sony
Metreon and the trendy SOMA (South of Market) neighborhood and Mission
District.

Qualifications

Qualified interns will be students in undergraduate or graduate programs
seeking on-the-job experience, or professionals looking to hone their
skill set. In all internships, excellent writing and communication skills
are necessary. RTC operates off a Microsoft Office platform, and
experience in Word, Excel, Access, PowerPoint and Outlook is expected.
Applicants should be task-oriented, highly organized and possess a strong
interest in environmental issues or related studies including trail
development.

Dear Colleague:

The City of San Jose, the International Institute for Sustainable
Transportation, and Mineta Transportation Institute invite you to attend
Podcar City, San José – Innovating Sustainable Communities, in San José,
California.

Podcars, also known as Personal Rapid Transit systems (PRT), are a new
transit technology that blends the convenience of the personal automobile
with the environmental benefits of mass transit. PRT offers the potential
to fundamentally change the way communities deliver transit services and
integrate land use and transportation. But, as with anything new, its
introduction raises a number of questions.

In 2010, three Podcar or Personal Rapid Transit systems began operation in
locations around the globe. A handful of other cities have expressed their
intent to build similar systems. Come hear from owners, would-be owners,
and experts on:

· PRT applications in Asia and Europe and, soon, the U.S.
· Technological and conceptual advances in materials, modeling, sensors
and control systems
· PRT design concepts and business models
· How Podcars can complement traditional transit and facilitate smart
growth
· Technical, financial and policy challenges—and how to overcome them

Who Should Attend: Public works, transportation, airport and planning
directors; engineering and technical professionals; land use and
transportation planners; researchers and educators, policy makers and
environmental leaders, regulatory officials and energy experts, designers,
architects and finance experts.

Register: http://podcarcity.org/events/podcar-city-san-jose/register/

Early-bird registration ends Sept. 24

We hope to see you there.

Subject: "Be the Change" Environmental Leadership Program
rickkos
Send Email Send Email

From Don Weden:

I'm writing to tell you about an environmental leadership program
called "Be the Change", offered by Acterra, a nonprofit organization
located in Palo Alto. The "Be the Change" program consists of about
10-11 day-long sessions -- one per month over the course of almost a
year -- aimed at providing people with the basic skills needed to
improve their effectiveness in promoting sustainability
(environmental, economic, and social) within their local communities.

The program is just entering its sixth year and has received rave
reviews from past participants -- who have ranged in age from their
late teens to their seventies. Many have found it to be a
transformative experience in their lives and some have even embarked
on new green careers after taking the class.

Part of each class session is devoted to presentations by experts on a
variety of subject issues, including water, waste, environmental
justice, land use and transportation, sustainable agriculture, etc.
The rest of the day is devoted to group discussions and various
activities to help the participants improve their leadership skills.

Each student is required to undertake a project of their choosing
during the course that will give them the opportunity to test and
develop their leadership skills -- in a very supportive environment.

This year's class will begin on September 17th.

I'll be making the keynote presentation "Effective Environmental
Leadership for the 21st Century: It's Time to Move Beyond 1970s
Environmentalism". (I'm an unpaid advisor, presenter, and mentor for
the program.)

Each class consists of about 25 participants, from a wide array of
backgrounds and life experiences.

For example, one of this year's participants, who I had the
opportunity to have dinner with a few weeks ago, was born in Vietnam,
raised in Paris, and has worked in Brazil, Texas, and New York City
before moving to Santa Clara County.

At lunch today, we interviewed a young woman who is a relatively
recent grad from UC Berkeley who currently works for VTA, and was
involved with a variety of environmental and social justice projects
during her years in college.

Another man we interviewed last week just completed a cross country
bike ride -- with his family and others -- on their electric bikes to
call attention to sustainability issues and projects across the
country. His sister is also likely to enroll in this year's class.

A couple of years ago, we had a woman in the class who was a graphic
designer by training. Her Be the Change class project involved
organizing the first Earth Day event at her daughter's school.
Although she initially encountered resistance from the school
administration, she persevered and was successful. In fact, she was so
successful that she was asked to help arrange similar events for other
schools in the school district. And, after that, she was hired by the
San Francisco Unified School District to help establish sustainability
programs throughout the school system.

The testimonials I have heard from people who have taken the course
have been truly inspirational.

The tuition for the class is $1,600 for the entire year. Flexible
payment plans can be arranged. Some limited scholarship funds are
available.

Time is running out to apply for this year's class and the number of
enrollees is approaching the limit of around 25 students.

But there's still room for a few more candidates who want to become
more effective in bringing about positive change within their
community, agency, organization, business, etc.

More information is available at Acterra's website:
http://www.acterra.org/programs/bethechange/index.html

Anyone interested in knowing more about the program and how to enroll
in it, should contact Rebecca Araiz Iverson, Director of the Be the
Change Program at (650) 922-1787 or rebeccaai@... ASAP.
