Academic Booster Club
What is high school all about? Clubs? Football games? Pep Rallies?
Dances? Why, "YES" to all of this … but most importantly, high

academics, leadership, citizenship, and personal development among
all students. That's the purpose of the Sanderson Academic Booster

promoting ALL of these values.

**Integrity is the Character Trait selected by Wake County Public
School System for focus during the month of February. The definition
of Integrity taken from the "Character Education Informational
Handbook & Guide", produced by the Public Schools of North Carolina,
is "having the inner strength to be truthful, trustworthy and honest
in all things; acting justly and honorably. Integrity is ever present
in our lives from the many scandals of Wall Street to the political
arena as well as in education such as discussions of cheating being
on the rise in high schools and colleges. It is only now, early in
the lives of our children, that we can foster the roots that
integrity stems from, to give them a passionate dedication to the
value of ones own integrity that will withstand question.

**AFJROTC Cadet Serves School While Earning Credit toward Eagle Scout
Sanderson's cadets now have a level platform for raising and
lowering the flags thanks to Cadet Jason Taylor and the Boy Scouts of
America. Jason completed a service project for Sanderson HS on 13
December that was seven months in planning. When the new flag pole
was put in place in front of the school last Spring, Jason asked if
he could build a pad around the pole for cadets to stand on while
raising and lowering the flags. He wanted to do something significant
and needed by the school as the service project required for Eagle
Scout. Jason's plan was passed to and approved by Mrs. Moore and on
Saturday, 13 December 2003, under Cadet Taylor's supervision, the pad
was put in place.
A special thanks to Wake Stone Corp. for the stones and sand, to
Envisions Co. for the expertise, and Brandco Inc. for the bricks
which were used for the project.
The area will now be maintained by the cadet corps as a school
beautification project.

**Sanderson won the North Carolina Food Bank's "Students Against
Hunger" competition among Triangle High Schools. This is the 3rd
year in a row that Sanderson has won. The Sanderson student body
raised 70,016 pounds, which is more than 14,000 pounds over last year
and 10,000 pounds more than the second place high school this year.
To achieve their win the students participated in several
events. "Kick for the Can" was a raffle during the Powder Puff
game, which allowed the winner to kick a field goal at half time for
Homecoming tickets. The "Penny Wars" brought in over $1,000. "Beat
Hunger" featured a junk car that students and faculty paid to take
swings at with a sledgehammer. "Trick or Treating for Cans" had
students collecting canned goods on Halloween. And then each
homeroom class collected money and cans in a competition. Way to Go
Spartans!!!!!!!
**Congratulations to Emily Dahl and Roby Chatterji who are Morehead
Scholarship Semifinalists.

Congratulations to five Sanderson High School teachers who have
become National Board Certified Teachers. Jennifer Elmo, Jasmine
Hart, Viola Lee, Dong Nguyen, and Meredith Soltesz now meet the
criteria set forth by the National Board for Professional Teaching
Standards.
To achieve National Board Certification the teachers participate in
an "extensive series of performance-based assessments that include
teaching Portfolios, student work samples, videotapes and thorough
analyses of the candidates' classroom teaching and student learning.
Teachers also complete a series of written exercises that probe the
depth of their subject-matter knowledge, as well as their
understanding of how to teach those subjects to their students".

FYI:
**Character Counts November
Courage - Having the determination to do the right thing even when
others don't; the strength to follow your conscience rather than the
crowd. Attempting difficult things that are worthwhile
**PTA Reflections 2003-2004 Theme "I am really happy when..." School
deadline 11/30/03
**Last week some of you ask "What's a bag tag?" A bag tag is a blue
key chain. Teachers request bag tags so that they can recognize
students for hard work, consistent effort on assignments, good
citizenship in the classroom, or academic/attendance improvement.
**The Total Connection has several articles about Sanderson students
this month including: Band Expo, Powder Puff Game, CAP6 Cross Country
Meet, Raleigh Youth Council. Copies may be picked up in the main
office at Sanderson.

We need to cultivate an engaged youth. This will provide results both
for students and the community. It will also insure a future
generation of thoughtful, sensitive and active citizens and leaders.
This is the essential ingredient both to our form of government and
our health as a society. " -- Wayne Meisel
"The greatest source of happiness in life is the reciprocal
communication between mutual friends…and the larger the amount of
giving in this relationship, the more happiness is obtained." -- Dr.
