ATHLETIC BANQUET

 

Don't forget to rsvp to the ATHLETIC BANQUET.  The banquet is on November 16th at 6pm and is FREE for all students who participated in a fall sport. (guests are $10) These athletes received an invitation via their coach and should respond as instructed.  Check the Sanderson website for a copy if you did not receive yours.

 

IT'S TIME FOR THE ANNUAL BAND FRUIT AND FLOWER SALE!!

 

It's time to place your order for fruit and flowers for the holiday season.   Orders can be placed with any Color Guard or Marching Spartan, and checks are payable to SHS Band Boosters.  Poinsettias (red, white, or pink) are $9, and grapefruit, oranges, tangelos, tangerines, and variety packs range from $18 to $25.  The sale will continue through November 6th, and delivery will be between Dec. 1st and 3rd .    You can also contact Mary Weaver (mary.weaver@... ) or Bernadette Clark (bernadette_clark@... ) for additional information.  We appreciate your support of the Sanderson Band programs!

CONGRATS TO OUR CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS!

The Sanderson Men's Cross Country team raced to a second place finish in the NCHSAA 4A Mideast Regional meet on Saturday, October 31. They finished a close second to Broughton, a team that they've been running neck and neck against all season. The Spartan team has qualified to run in the NCHSAA State Championship meet this Saturday, November 7 at Tanglewood Park, in Clemmons, near Winston-Salem. The 7 who will be running for the men's team are Matt Schick, Matt Geisz, Mitchell Feldman, Philip Hathaway, Ben Boyles, Andrew White and Patrick Crawford. Matt Schick, who finished 6th, earned All-Region. Joining seven male runners will be the Cook sisters, Allison and Samantha, who qualified on the basis of their individual finishes in the women's race.

SHS SOCCER TEAM IN THE PLAYOFFS!

The Sanderson men's soccer team will host Middle Creek in the first round of the NCHSAA 4A State Playoffs on Tuesday, November 3 at 6:30 PM.  Admission will cost $5.00 per person.   Come and support our team!!

 

COFFEE CHAT

Coffee Chat will have its first meeting on Thursday, November 12th starting at 8:30 am in the SHS auditorium. Join us for the opportunity to meet with Dr. Decker and Sanderson's new assistant principals.  After introductions are made you will have the opportunity to ask any questions you may have. NCSU DESIGN CAMP (summer opportunity)

 

North Carolina State University's Design Camp is for high school students who, as young artists and designers, are serious about preparing portfolios for art and for design college admission as well as for beginners who are interested in developing skills and creativity through hands-on experiences.   The purpose of design camp is to expose high school students to college study in design and to professional pursuits in architecture, graphic design, landscape architecture, art + design and industrial design.  Students will complete projects while also learning how to question, make choices, generate alternatives, and work collaboratively.

Cost- Day camp is $450, overnight camp is $900. A $100 downpayment is due with the completed application. NCSU can offer financial assistance to qualified students to offset the costs of camp.

Calendar - Day camp - July 11-16 and Overnight camp - June 20-26 or July 25-31.  Application window opens up February 16, 2010. Design Camp fills up quickly, so don't delay!

ATTENTION ALL WRITERS!!

WRITING CONTEST

The NC Department of Cultural Resources announces a writing contest, Letters about Literature, sponsored by the Center for the Book in the Library of Congress and by Target.  The deadline for entries is December 12, 2009.

 

For this competition, students select a fiction or nonfiction book, a short story, poem, essay, or speech about which they have strong feelings.  Each student writes a personal, reflective letter to the author.  There are both state and national awards.

SUMMER VENTURES IN SCIENCE AND MATHEMATICS FOR SUMMER 2010

Who:   This program seeks rising juniors and seniors who are academically talented, motivated to pursue independent research, and who have already demonstrated their commitment to academic growth and development in science and mathematics. The average unweighted GPA for summer 2009 participants was 3.86. Students must be able to handle the responsibility of living in a residential setting for four weeks, away from the supervision of their parents or guardians.

 

What:   A four-week residential summer program on a selected university campus for academically talented students who are interested in doing research in science and math and who are considering careers based in science and mathematics.  There is no cost to participants for room/board or tuition.

 

When:   The program takes place during one of two four-week periods in the summer of 2009. Session I will be June 20-July 17 and Session II will be June 27- July 24. (Students may not attend Governor's School and Summer Ventures in the same summer) Application deadline is listed below.

 

Where:   A participating university campus in NC. This summer's locations are as follows: Appalachian State, East Carolina University, NC Central University, UNC Charlotte, UNC Wilmington and Western Carolina University

 

How:   Applications are available outside Ms. Mosher's office in Student Services or online at www.summerventures.org . The application requires substantial information from the student, teachers, and the student's school counselor, so plan accordingly and begin the application process now. Completed applications must be postmarked on or before Sunday, January 31, 2010.

CATALYST CONFERENCE, FEBRUARY 26-28, 2010, UNC CHAPEL HILL – OPPORTUNITY FOR PRESENT 9 TH, 10TH, AND 11TH GRADE STUDENTS

Would you like to be one of 80 students from across North Carolina selected to attend a week-end-long exploration of social justice issues affecting the U.S. and the world at large?  Through leadership and personal development sessions, the Conference provides an open forum for discussion of community issues of social justice and equality, empowers students to combat the apathy of today's youth, and seeks to transform high school students into catalysts for positive social change, all while interacting with other students in relationships that transcend racial, ethnic, and religious boundaries. 

The conference will take place on the campus of UNC Chapel Hill, Feb. 26-28, 2010.  Once you apply and if you are accepted to participate, you will be expected to pay a $30.00 registration fee.  (DO NOT SEND IN THIS FEE WITH YOUR APPLICATION.  It is only expected if you are accepted to participate.)  If you are accepted but cannot pay the fee, you may be able to receive a scholarship from the Catalyst Conference Committee by contacting them.

NO FUSS FUNDRAISER UPDATE

Sanderson's no fuss fundraiser is currently at $9,909 – we are getting soooo close to our goal of $10,000, but still a bit short!  If you have not contributed yet, please consider making a donation to our school!  Also just a reminder that any
Seniors who want to be considered for the PTSA scholarships must be a
member; it's only $8 to join.  Forms are available on the Sanderson website.

INTERNET SAFETY COURSE

 

Internet Safety for Young People and Families

Parents and families are invited to a special presentation, "Internet Safety for Young People and Families," that will be held on Tuesday, November 17th from 3:30-6:30pm at the Commons Building off of the Poole Rd exit at I-440. This event, sponsored by the Partnership for Educational Success, will include the topics: What you don't know can hurt your child, Internet predators, Cyber- bullying, Parental Controls, and more. As soon as scores are available, they are immediately released to the colleges/universities/scholarship programs you selected at the time you registered. At other times during the year rush reporting costs $27.00 for processing (and an additional $9.50 per recipient, if requested after your initial free scores were reported).

Free SAT Prep Course

Sanderson will be offering SAT Prep for each of the fall administrations of the SAT.  Prep classes are led by well-trained SHS students with a faculty member present.  Classes will be held each Friday beginning at 3:10 in the JROTC room, room 197.  No pre-sign-up is necessary; students may just "show up."

NURSING COURSE SIGN UP

Any student interested in signing up for the Certified Nursing Assistant I course for the spring semester needs to sign up in the career center by November 10th.  This is a community college course offered at Wake Tech.  Students must be a junior or senior, have at least a 2.0 GPA, and personal transportation to the health sciences campus.

 

 

THE NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND MATH (NCSSM)

 

What:  A public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors.  The school provides challenging educational opportunities for young men and women who have interest and potential for high achievement in the sciences and mathematics.  There is no cost to the student.  Who:  Academically gifted/talented students who are interested in the areas of science and math apply during the first semester of their sophomore year (10th grade).  Admission is very competitive.  

When:  Application deadline is January 15, 2010. Applications will be available online no later than mid-October. 

How:  Applications for admission are only available online through the NCSSM website:  www.ncssm.edu/admissions

 

Students must take the SAT during their 10th grade year on one of the following SAT test dates: Oct 10, Nov 7, Dec 5, or Jan 23.  See NCSSM web site for very specific directions for reporting SAT scores to NCSSM.  SAT registration information is available in the SHS Student Services office or online at collegeboard.com

NEWS FOR OUR SENIORS….THE CLASS OF 2010!

 

Students are allowed 2 excused college visits...one PER semester that will not affect their exam exemption status. A form must be picked up from attendance or guidance, filled out and returned before the absence.

 

Graduation for Sanderson is set for Thursday, June 10th at noon – it will be here before you know it! 

 

 

ATTENTION ALL SENIORS AND PARENTS OF SENIORS: 

 

Effective immediately, all transcripts that need to be sent to any North Carolina 2-year or 4-year college or university MUST be requested through CFNC (College Foundation of North Carolina).  If you have completed your application for college admission through CFNC, you have probably already checked the box asking CFNC to send your transcript.  If you did not, or if you are not sending your application through CFNC, you must go to CFNC and create a personal account; after doing so, you may go to On-Line Applications,Transcript Manager, and then follow instructions for submitting your transcript.  This opportunity through CFNC also allows you to track your transcript to make sure that is has been sent and that your colleges received the transcript.

Please note, too, that when your North Carolina college or university application has a Counselor Statement or Secondary School Report form that must be completed by your counselor, you must provide a stamped, addressed envelope to your counselor to mail the Statement or Report.    Thanks for your assistance.  Student Services

 

 

FINANCIAL AID INFORMATION

 

Sanderson Parents of Seniors are invited to attend a Financial Aid Information Meeting on Tuesday, December 8, at 7:00 p.m. in the Sanderson High School Auditorium.  Bill Cox, former Financial Aid Director at Meredith College and now with the North Carolina State Education Assistance Authority, will present information regarding the FAFSA (Free Application for Federal Student Aid), loans, grants, and the financial aid application process in general.  Mrs. Ellen Wardlaw, Sanderson's Financial Aid Advisor, will also be present.  Please make your plans to attend.

North Carolina State United States Bowling Congress Association Youth Scholarship

Amount: $1,500.00. Applied to any recognized college, university, or trade school.   Eligibility: Any senior in a N.C. high school prior to the age of 22.  Must be a current member of the N.C. State United States Bowling Congress Association and must be bowling in a certified USBC North Carolina youth league. Must have an unimpaired amateur standing in bowling.   Deadline: Application, transcript and letters of recommendation must be postmarked no later than March 1, 2010.   You will find more information and an application in the Sanderson High School Career Center. KFC Colonel's Scholars Program

 

Seniors who have financial need and an entrepreneurial spirit are encouraged to participate in the KFC Colonel's Scholars Program. To qualify, seniors should: 1) have a minimum GPA of 2.75, 2) enroll in a public college/university after graduation in their home state, 3) plan to pursue a bachelor's degree, 4) be a US citizen or permanent resident, and 5) demonstrate financial need. Awards are up to $20,000 for tuition, fees, room and board.

The Raleigh Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities

Attention Seniors!

The Raleigh Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities will award two $1,000 scholarships to students with documented disabilities. Applicants must be residents of the City of Raleigh and must be enrolled in, or have been accepted to, an accredited undergraduate college, trade school, or community college. Selection is based on academics, financial need, character, school or community awards, leadership potential, and the ability to express oneself in written form.

If you are interested and feel you meet the criteria set by the Raleigh Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities, please pick up an application from Mrs. Davis in Student Services. Your completed application along with a copy of your college acceptance letter is due to your counselor no later than Monday, May 3rd.

 

 

American Red Cross Queen of Hearts Scholarship Program

Any ambitious, outgoing young woman who has a passion to help others and her community is invited to participate in the American Red Cross Fund-Raising program and earn scholarship money at the same time.  If you are a high school female student who would like the opportunity to creatively raise funds for the American Red Cross and compete for a scholarship, please go to http://www.trianglearc.org/EVENTS/QueenofHearts/tabid/800/language/en-US/Default.aspx to find out more information and to complete an application to participate.  Activities will take place in February 2010 with the Queen of Hearts being named in early March.  However, applications are due November 20, 2009.

The deadline for seniors applying for Air Force ROTC scholarships is December 1st.  Go to www.afrotc.com for the online application.  AFROTC scholarships provide tuition and fees for competitive students who are willing to serve as officers in the United States Air Force for 4 years, following the completion of their college degree at 1 of over 900 civilian colleges and universities in the nation. The Alumnae Legacy Scholarship at Meredith College

 

This scholarship is the highest honor available to an entering freshman and is renewable for four years. The student awarded this prestigious scholarship receives full tuition, room and board, books, supplies, international study, networking opportunities with the Meredith president and alumnae, and other academic enrichment programs. The selection of recipients for this award takes into account superior academic achievement, intellectual promise and leadership ability. This is a full-tuition scholarship available for entering freshmen, and is renewable for four years.  Like the Alumnae Legacy Scholarship, the selection of recipients for this prestigious award will be based on merit, taking into account superior academic achievement, intellectual promise and leadership ability.  Each recipient may apply for a stipend to help cover the cost of a study abroad experience; Presidential Scholars also participate in the Honors Program.  Students are selected to interview for the Presidential Scholarship from the Honors Program applicant pool.  The Honors Program Application is available online or by calling the Office of Admissions.  Learn more about the Honors Program at www.meredith.edu/honors.

Ithica is offering the Martin Luther King Jr. Scholars Program to outstanding under represented students.  The program focuses on citizenship and service to communities.  Scholars receive awards ranging from $18000 - full tuition paid to Ithaca College, renewable up to 4 years.  Visit www.ithaca.edu/mlk for more information.  You must meet all regular admission requirements and deadlines to the university as well as complete the separate scholarship application before January 15, 2010.  Students may pick up a scholarship application in the career center.

The Roy H. Park Scholar Award

Who : Seniors interested in majoring in a communications field

Criteria : High achieving and motivated senior with an interest in communications and leadership potential.

Award Amount : Full tuition for four years (estimated value of $172,000), a stipend for living expenses and books, and a one-time computer purchase stipend of $2,500.

·          As part of the scholarship process, students must complete an application to Ithaca College.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

 

Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year are now available online.

General Eligibility Requirements:  Be of Hispanic heritage (most programs).  Have a minimum 3.0 cumulative GPA.  Be a U.S. citizen or permanent resident.  Have plans to enroll as a FULL-TIME student in the Fall of 2010.   For more specific information about specific scholarships, deadlines, application forms, etc., go to www.hsf.net/scholarships

 

 

 

National Association of Secondary School Principals Scholarship

 

Attention seniors. The 2009-2010 Principal's Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from across the country. Sanderson may nominate ONE senior based on their leadership, service, achievement in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record.

    If you are interested in being Sanderson's nominee, please submit a resume and a letter detailing why you think you would be the best candidate for this scholarship. Resumes and letters must be submitted to Mr. O'Connor in Student Services no later than Friday, November 20.

 

 

UNC Greensboro Merit Awards Program

 

Multiple academic excellence awards are offered to incoming freshmen at UNCG. To apply for the Merit Awards Program, current high school seniors must present a minimum 1800 SAT or 27 ACT (writing section is required for the ACT ) and a 3.5 minimum high school GPA. Annual award amounts range from $2,500 to full tuition, fees, room & board, and are renewable up to a total of four years. Scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of exceptional academic achievement and potential.

The College offers numerous scholarship opportunities to qualified students each year. National Co-Op Scholarship Program

 

Seniors applying to the following colleges/universities should consider applying for the National Co-Op Scholarship Program:

University of Toledo

Wentworth Institute of Technology

 

To be eligible for the scholarship program, applicants must have a minimum 3.5 high school GPA and complete all of the required admissions applications material and be accepted for the 2010-2011 academic year at one of the partner institutions listed. 170 $6,000 merit co-op scholarships will be awarded between the eight partner colleges/universities.

Levine Scholarship Program- UNC Charlotte (new for 2009-10!)

 

Application/nomination program for seniors. Levine Scholars will receive a full scholarship to UNC Charlotte for four years, a grant to implement a service project of their own design, and four summers of experiences that will develop their leadership strengths and social awareness. Total value for in-state students over the 4 years- $90,000.

 

Applicants should be outstanding high school seniors who demonstrate evidence of experience, motivation and commitment towards the ideals of the Levine Scholars Program. Requirements include: (1) seniors who are applying as freshmen at UNC Charlotte (university acceptance is required)

(2) the Levine Scholars program anticipates that successful applicants have an unweighted GPA of 3.8 or better, a combined SAT score of 1800-2400 or ACT composite score of 29-36. There are no minimum GPA, SAT or ACT requirements, but students must excel academically

(3) students should demonstrate a commitment to community service, hold an academic record that reflects a sustained passion for knowledge and possess a capacity for ethical leadership that beckons fellow students toward a higher standard
