IT'S TIME FOR THE ANNUAL BAND FRUIT AND FLOWER SALE!!

 

It's time to place your order for fruit and flowers for the holiday season.   Orders can be placed with any Color Guard or Marching Spartan, and checks are payable to SHS Band Boosters.  Poinsettias (red, white, or pink) are $9, and grapefruit, oranges, tangelos, tangerines, and variety packs range from $18 to $25.  The sale will continue through November 6th, and delivery will be between Dec. 1st and 3rd .    You can also contact Mary Weaver (mary.weaver@... ) or Bernadette Clark (bernadette_clark@... ) for additional information.  We appreciate your support of the Sanderson Band programs!

CONGRATS TO OUR CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS!

Congratulations to the SHS Men's Cross Country Team for earning the Cap Seven Conference Championship on October 20.  Ten members of the team competed in the championship race.  Four Spartans finished among the top 14 runners and were named to the All-Conference team - Matt Shick (4th), Matt Geisz (5), Mitchell Feldman (7), and Philip Hathaway (8). The championship was the eighth conference championship for the Spartan Men's Cross Country team in school history and the first since 1992.

 

The Spartans' Women's Cross Country team finished in third place in the Cap Seven Championship meet on October 20. They were led by three Spartans who earned All-Conference honors by finishing in the top 14 in the race. Earning All-Conference were Allison Cook (3rd), Samantha Cook (4), and Anna Taylor (14).

 

NO FUSS FUNDRAISER UPDATE

Sanderson's no fuss fundraiser is currently at $9,398 – we are getting close to our goal of $10,000, but still a bit short!  If you have not contributed yet, please consider making a donation to our school!

HAVE YOU GOTTEN YOUR FLU SHOT??

Schools across Wake County will be sponsoring free seasonal flu shot clinics during the months of October and November for all students in grades K-12.  A clinic at Sanderson will be held on Thursday, October 29, from 3:30 to 7:30 PM.  Students may get the shot at any of the clinics--they are not required to get the shot at the school they attend.  The clinics are voluntary – not mandatory for students to attend.  A parent or guardian must accompany all students receiving the vaccine, regardless of age.   For more information, including a list of all of the scheduled clinics, visit the WCPSS website:

INTERNET SAFETY COURSE

 

Internet Safety for Young People and Families

Parents and families are invited to a special presentation, "Internet Safety for Young People and Families," that will be held on Tuesday, November 17th from 3:30-6:30pm at the Commons Building off of the Poole Rd exit at I-440. This event, sponsored by the Partnership for Educational Success, will include the topics: What you don't know can hurt your child, Internet predators, Cyber- bullying, Parental Controls, and more. Please know that for the November SAT test, there is no need to place a "rush" order on your scores. As soon as scores are available, they are immediately released to the colleges/universities/scholarship programs you selected at the time you registered. At other times during the year rush reporting costs $27.00 for processing (and an additional $9.50 per recipient, if requested after your initial free scores were reported).

Free SAT Prep Course

Sanderson will be offering SAT Prep for each of the fall administrations of the SAT.  Prep classes are led by well-trained SHS students with a faculty member present.  Classes will be held each Friday beginning at 3:10 in the JROTC room, room 197.  No pre-sign-up is necessary; students may just "show up."

THE NORTH CAROLINA SCHOOL OF SCIENCE AND MATH (NCSSM)

 

What:  A public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors.  The school provides challenging educational opportunities for young men and women who have interest and potential for high achievement in the sciences and mathematics.  There is no cost to the student.  Who:  Academically gifted/talented students who are interested in the areas of science and math apply during the first semester of their sophomore year (10th grade).  Admission is very competitive.  

When:  Application deadline is January 15, 2010. Applications will be available online no later than mid-October. 

How:  Applications for admission are only available online through the NCSSM website:  www.ncssm.edu/admissions

 

Students must take the SAT during their 10th grade year on one of the following SAT test dates: Oct 10, Nov 7, Dec 5, or Jan 23.  See NCSSM web site for very specific directions for reporting SAT scores to NCSSM.  SAT registration information is available in the SHS Student Services office or online at collegeboard.com

Students are allowed 2 excused college visits...one PER semester that will not affect their exam exemption status. A form must be picked up from attendance or guidance, filled out and returned before the absence.

The Raleigh-Wake Alumni Chapter of Winston-Salem State University is sponsoring a college visitation day Saturday, November 7, 2009. This college visitation is open to all high school sophomores, juniors and seniors with at least a 2.0 GPA. The cost of the trip is $20.00 per person, which includes transportation from Crabtree Valley mall to and from WSSU, lunch and a ticket to the WSSU/Delaware State football game that day. The Raleigh Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities

Attention Seniors!

The Raleigh Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities will award two $1,000 scholarships to students with documented disabilities. Applicants must be residents of the City of Raleigh and must be enrolled in, or have been accepted to, an accredited undergraduate college, trade school, or community college. Selection is based on academics, financial need, character, school or community awards, leadership potential, and the ability to express oneself in written form.

If you are interested and feel you meet the criteria set by the Raleigh Mayor's Committee for Persons with Disabilities, please pick up an application from Mrs. Davis in Student Services. Your completed application along with a copy of your college acceptance letter is due to your counselor no later than Monday, May 3rd.

 

 

American Red Cross Queen of Hearts Scholarship Program

Any ambitious, outgoing young woman who has a passion to help others and her community is invited to participate in the American Red Cross Fund-Raising program and earn scholarship money at the same time.  If you are a high school female student who would like the opportunity to creatively raise funds for the American Red Cross and compete for a scholarship, please go to http://www.trianglearc.org/EVENTS/QueenofHearts/tabid/800/language/en-US/Default.aspx to find out more information and to complete an application to participate.  Activities will take place in February 2010 with the Queen of Hearts being named in early March.  However, applications are due November 20, 2009.

The Alumnae Legacy Scholarship at Meredith College

 

This scholarship is the highest honor available to an entering freshman and is renewable for four years. The student awarded this prestigious scholarship receives full tuition, room and board, books, supplies, international study, networking opportunities with the Meredith president and alumnae, and other academic enrichment programs. The selection of recipients for this award takes into account superior academic achievement, intellectual promise and leadership ability. Presidential Scholarships at Meredith College

The Roy H. Park Scholar Award

Who : Seniors interested in majoring in a communications field

Criteria : High achieving and motivated senior with an interest in communications and leadership potential.

Award Amount : Full tuition for four years (estimated value of $172,000), a stipend for living expenses and books, and a one-time computer purchase stipend of $2,500.

·          As part of the scholarship process, students must complete an application to Ithaca College.

Hispanic Scholarship Fund

 

Applications for the 2010-2011 academic year are now available online.

John Montgomery Belk Scholarship at Davidson College

 

Attention Seniors!

   If you are interested in attending Davidson College in the fall of 2010, the John Montgomery Scholarship might be of interest to you. Davidson will be awarding up to five Belk Scholarship, each annually renewable and valued at the college's comprehensive fees ($45,030 in 2009-2010) plus two summer stipends (up to $3,000) to pursue international study and other enrichment activities.

   Each high school may only nominate ONE student. Davidson is looking for students who "demonstrate purposeful engagement in the classroom, with student and civic organizations, on the athletic field, or in the arts." Candidates must apply to Davidson College.

   If you feel you meet the criteria set by Davidson College for the John Montgomery Belk Scholarship and are interested in being Sanderson's nominee, please submit a resume and letter of interest to Mr. O'Connor in Student Services no later than Friday, October 30.

 

 

 

Randolph College Presidential Scholarship

 

Attention seniors. Randolph College , located in Lynchburg , Virginia , is offering the Presidential Scholarship to outstanding students planning to attend Randolph College in the fall. If you are interested in being nominated, please submit a resume to Mr. O'Connor in Student Services no later than Wednesday, October 28.

 

 

National Association of Secondary School Principals Scholarship

 

Attention seniors. The 2009-2010 Principal's Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from across the country. Sanderson may nominate ONE senior based on their leadership, service, achievement in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record.

    If you are interested in being Sanderson's nominee, please submit a resume and a letter detailing why you think you would be the best candidate for this scholarship. Resumes and letters must be submitted to Mr. O'Connor in Student Services no later than Friday, November 20.

 

 

UNC Greensboro Merit Awards Program

 

Multiple academic excellence awards are offered to incoming freshmen at UNCG. To apply for the Merit Awards Program, current high school seniors must present a minimum 1800 SAT or 27 ACT (writing section is required for the ACT ) and a 3.5 minimum high school GPA. Annual award amounts range from $2,500 to full tuition, fees, room & board, and are renewable up to a total of four years. Scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of exceptional academic achievement and potential.

Levine Scholarship Program- UNC Charlotte (new for 2009-10!)

 

Application/nomination program for seniors. Levine Scholars will receive a full scholarship to UNC Charlotte for four years, a grant to implement a service project of their own design, and four summers of experiences that will develop their leadership strengths and social awareness. Total value for in-state students over the 4 years- $90,000.

 

Applicants should be outstanding high school seniors who demonstrate evidence of experience, motivation and commitment towards the ideals of the Levine Scholars Program. Requirements include: (1) seniors who are applying as freshmen at UNC Charlotte (university acceptance is required)

(2) the Levine Scholars program anticipates that successful applicants have an unweighted GPA of 3.8 or better, a combined SAT score of 1800-2400 or ACT composite score of 29-36. There are no minimum GPA, SAT or ACT requirements, but students must excel academically

(3) students should demonstrate a commitment to community service, hold an academic record that reflects a sustained passion for knowledge and possess a capacity for ethical leadership that beckons fellow students toward a higher standard

Deadlines:

Students must be nominated by one of the following individuals as their high school- teacher, principal, school counselor. Students must provide the nominator with the following information- Legal first name, middle name & last name, preferred first name, email address, and date of the most recent SAT test taken. The last day for students to ask a school official to complete a nomination is Tuesday, November 10,  2009.

Thomas Wolfe Scholarship (UNC Chapel Hill)

 

The Creative Writing Program and the Department of English of the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill are pleased to announce the Thomas Wolfe Scholarship, which offers full four-year financial support to one incoming freshman per year. The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship seeks to identify and reward students with exceptionally focused literary ability and promise

Thomas Wolfe Scholarship applicants must apply simultaneously to the University of North Carolina at Chapel Hill for admission and must meet all academic requirements for admission. These are two distinct application processes and require different forms and separate mailings.

The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship award, the first of its kind at UNC-Chapel Hill, will be based largely on written work submitted by candidates. Artistic merit is the chief criterion of selection. Students who write poetry, fiction, plays, literary non-fiction (personal narratives, memoir, travel and nature essays, literary journalism, belles-lettres) are eligible. Multiple genre submissions are also encouraged, though submissions are limited to one application per student.

The application process will require the submission of up to fifty (50) pages in prose, forty (40) pages in poetry, or sixty (60) in play writing, in English. In addition to completing an application questionnaire, candidates will submit a five-hundred-word personal essay entitled "Why I Write."

The age of entering freshmen under The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship shall not exceed twenty-two (22) years. The scholarship is not available to undergraduate college students seeking to transfer to UNC-Chapel Hill from other institutions. All applicants shall be citizens of the United States of America.
