IT'S TIME FOR THE ANNUAL BAND FRUIT AND FLOWER
It's time to place your order for fruit and flowers for the holiday season. Orders can be placed with any Color Guard or Marching Spartan, and checks are payable to SHS Band Boosters. Poinsettias (red, white, or pink) are $9, and grapefruit, oranges, tangelos, tangerines, and variety packs range from $18 to $25. The sale will continue through November 6th, and delivery will be between Dec. 1st and 3rd . CONGRATS TO OUR CROSS COUNTRY RUNNERS!
Congratulations to the SHS Men's Cross Country Team for earning the Cap Seven Conference Championship on October 20. Ten members of the team competed in the championship race. Four Spartans finished among the top 14 runners and were named to the All-Conference team - Matt Shick (4th), Matt Geisz (5), Mitchell Feldman (7), and Philip Hathaway (8). The championship was the eighth conference championship for the Spartan Men's Cross Country team in school history and the first since 1992.
The Spartans' Women's Cross Country team finished in third place in the Cap Seven Championship meet on October 20. They were led by three Spartans who earned All-Conference honors by finishing in the top 14 in the race. Earning All-Conference were Allison Cook (3rd), Samantha Cook (4), and Anna Taylor (14).

INTERNET SAFETY COURSE
Internet Safety for Young People and Families
Parents and families are invited to a special presentation, "Internet Safety for Young People and Families," that will be held on Tuesday, November 17th from 3:30-6:30pm at the Commons Building off of the Poole Rd exit at I-440. This event, sponsored by the Partnership for Educational Success, will include the topics: What you don't know can hurt your child, Internet predators, Cyber- bullying, Parental Controls, and more. Free SAT Prep Course
Sanderson will be offering SAT Prep for each of the fall administrations of the SAT. Prep classes are led by well-trained SHS students with a faculty member present. Classes will be held each Friday beginning at 3:10 in the JROTC room, room 197. No pre-sign-up is necessary; students may just "show up."

What: A public, residential high school for academically talented juniors and seniors. The school provides challenging educational opportunities for young men and women who have interest and potential for high achievement in the sciences and mathematics. There is no cost to the student. Who: Academically gifted/talented students who are interested in the areas of science and math apply during the first semester of their sophomore year (10th grade). Admission is very competitive.
When: Application deadline is January 15, 2010. Applications will be available online no later than mid-October.

In conjunction with College Foundation of NC, Sanderson High will be participating in College Application Week November 17-19, 2009. During this time select colleges will be waiving their application fee and seniors will receive assistance from Sanderson High counselors with the completion of college applications. On November 17, 18, and 19 th SHS counselors will be available to assist students in the completion of college applications during SMART Lunch. Seniors will have an opportunity to sign up to participate on November 4, 5, and 6 outside the cafeteria during SMART lunch. American Red Cross Queen of Hearts Scholarship Program
Any ambitious, outgoing young woman who has a passion to help others and her community is invited to participate in the American Red Cross Fund-Raising program and earn scholarship money at the same time. The Alumnae Legacy Scholarship at
This scholarship is the highest honor available to an entering freshman and is renewable for four years. The student awarded this prestigious scholarship receives full tuition, room and board, books, supplies, international study, networking opportunities with the Meredith president and alumnae, and other academic enrichment programs. The selection of recipients for this award takes into account superior academic achievement, intellectual promise and leadership ability. National Association of Secondary School Principals Scholarship
Attention seniors. The 2009-2010 Principal's Scholarships ranging from $1,000 to $12,000 will be awarded to 100 outstanding seniors from across the country. Sanderson may nominate ONE senior based on their leadership, service, achievement in the arts and sciences, employment experience, and academic record.
If you are interested in being Sanderson's nominee, please submit a resume and a letter detailing why you think you would be the best candidate for this scholarship. Resumes and letters must be submitted to Mr. O'Connor in Student Services no later than Friday, November 20.
UNC
Multiple academic excellence awards are offered to incoming freshmen at UNCG. To apply for the Merit Awards Program, current high school seniors must present a minimum 1800 SAT or 27 ACT (writing section is required for the ACT ) and a 3.5 minimum high school GPA. Annual award amounts range from $2,500 to full tuition, fees, room & board, and are renewable up to a total of four years. Scholarship recipients are selected primarily on the basis of exceptional academic achievement and potential.

Application/nomination program for seniors. Levine Scholars will receive a full scholarship to UNC Charlotte for four years, a grant to implement a service project of their own design, and four summers of experiences that will develop their leadership strengths and social awareness. Total value for in-state students over the 4 years- $90,000.
Applicants should be outstanding high school seniors who demonstrate evidence of experience, motivation and commitment towards the ideals of the Levine Scholars Program. Requirements include: (1) seniors who are applying as freshmen at UNC Charlotte (university acceptance is required)
(2) the Levine Scholars program anticipates that successful applicants have an unweighted GPA of 3.8 or better, a combined SAT score of 1800-2400 or ACT composite score of 29-36. There are no minimum GPA, SAT or ACT requirements, but students must excel academically

The Thomas Wolfe Scholarship award, the first of its kind at UNC-Chapel Hill, will be based largely on written work submitted by candidates. Artistic merit is the chief criterion of selection. Students who write poetry, fiction, plays, literary non-fiction (personal narratives, memoir, travel and nature essays, literary journalism, belles-lettres) are eligible. Multiple genre submissions are also encouraged, though submissions are limited to one application per student.
