Hello friends,

Many people think of permaculture as gardening, but that's a lot like
thinking of math as being only good for building bridges. Permaculture is
a sustainable design science rooted in observation of nature and providing
solutions to some of our most pressing problems. The same branching
pattern that's found in tree is also found in a river, in your heart, and
numerous other places. That pattern maximizes edge (surface area for
exchanging information or nutrients), increases diversity and serves a
whole range of other functions.

Join an incredible regenerative leadership and permaculture design
certification retreat in the San Francisco Bay Area, February 16-24th or
April 20-28th, and go beyond sustainability towards a wildly fulfilling
life and a truly regenerative culture. We offer a no-nonsense, deeply
pragmatic, mainstream approach to permaculture. No ideologies, only
functional design and solutions that truly work. "This course was the
BEST time I have had in the past 6 years" -- Lana T

The most common example of biomimicry and permaculture is velcro, which was
invented by a swiss engineer who removed burrs from his dog, and noticed
how the small hooks on the burr grabbed to his dog's fur. Another great
example is better packaging designs. Have you ever considered how nature
packages pomegranate seeds inside a pomegranate? What we teach is
fundamentally the art of biomimicry -- observing nature and designing our
whole way of life with the patterns of nature, while often allowing nature
to do much of the work for us.

Go beyond sustainability towards a truly regenerative culture. Imagine
waking up each day with the knowledge that your whole life, including your
career, is completely aligned with your deepest passions, desires,
principles and values. The experiential permaculture design certification
course is your path towards a career in regenerative permaculture design
and a truly thriving life, deeply rooted in the patterns of nature and a
larger vision of regenerative community and regenerative culture.

Come get inspired by learning pragmatic permaculture design and
regenerative leadership skills for your life, career, business, and
community from the world's leading sustainability experts; and earn your
internationally recognized Permaculture Design Certificate. The skills
offered in this course are applicable to every aspect of your life, far
beyond the garden - you will learn to design nature-inspired, resilient,
regenerative systems – composting toilets, water-catchment system,
natural green buildings, eco-villages and much more.

While many people think of permaculture as gardening, that's a lot like
thinking of math as being about building bridges. Permaculture is a
sustainable design science rooted in observation of natural patterns. For
example, the same branching pattern of a tree is present in every river, as
well as in our own bodies -- the pattern maximizes edge, increases
diversity, and serves at least a dozen other functions. The very concepts
of diversity increasing stability of natural living systems and edge
increasing diversity are core permaculture teachings.

Consistently ranked as the single most powerful and transformational
experience of participants' entire lives, the experiential intensive
inspires real vision and personal regenerative leadership through practical
solutions of natural pattern observation and bio-mimicry design for a truly
regenerative culture.

many testimonials from past participants

"I really enjoyed the experience, I can feel my permaculture mind
continuing to grow as things settle in from the course." -- Jaye M

"Thank you for the experience I had - it was wonderful. Best wishes and
continued growth." -- Susan L

permaculture lens that I can put on at will, and see the world around me in
a way that I feel leads to making more conscious decisions and living
better in harmony with the earth." - Deborah F.

Subject: Live Food Lifestyle Support: 30 Days, 30 Conference Calls
environ_ment...
Send Email Send Email

Would you like to have a conversation once every day about the raw food lifestyle and Live-Food Nutrition, with an experienced raw foods coach-instructor?

For 30 days, every day, I will be on a conference call with you for raw food guidance for a half hour!

Each day, the half hour will be split into:
  • 10 minutes where I will give useful, interesting, and scientifically backed information on a topic in Live-Food Nutrition
  • 20 minutes where you will be able to ask questions and get my answers as well as peer group feedback.
This program is laissez faire guidance, in the sense that no one book or protocol is assigned for you to use.  I believe in promoting your individual dietary discovery through your own raw foods trial and error, than to generate dependence on my recipes, my book, or any one thing.  (That self-trial experience is what worked for my healthy transition into live foods, after all!)

You may each have different recipe books and access to different raw ingredients, and still our conference calls will be able to benefit you, since the common thread is raw food, and I am used to working with raw-food interest groups from "all over the map."

All you commit to finding is something, perhaps a raw food recipe book you already have or one you now choose to go and get, to inspire you to get the ingredients, make something raw to eat, and eat it.  That's what the whole group will have in common.

By the end of 30 days, you might like what you're eating, and how you feel when you're eating it, a whole lot.

Some themes of the program:
  • Fun
  • Common Sense
  • Self-Responsibility and Sovereignty (this is no "one-raw-diet-fits-all" program)
Topics throughout the 30 days will encompass:
  • Getting fat, protein, and carbohydrates in a balance in raw food nutrition
  • Basic kitchen set-up
  • Intuitive eating
  • Social life and live-food
  • And much more.
This program is January 11 to February 10.
There's 24 hours to sign up.
The calls will be at 8:00 to 8:30 AM PST, available nationwide and worldwide.

Your opportunity to have a call-in with me and your raw-transitioning peers once a day, every day, for 30 days is available ONLY to the first handful of people who register.

This program is no dent in your budget.  It is very inexpensive.  And even then it is limited to just the first handful of people who register.  This is to select for people who really want to go live for this key period of the year, and to allow every participant to ask their questions on the phone.  If we push past 20 people registered, I will start a new group to keep each group small.  The program price is only $47.  Do you want to register?

About the Program Facilitator, Michael Bedar

I am unable to attend the membership meeting and would really like to be a speaker at this year's event in September. My newest book Nutrition CHAMPIONS will be out by then. I would love to inform the audience about the best plant-based foods to choose for health. Please let me know what the process is for doing this.

I have spoken (actually did a cooking demo) at SFVS World Veg Day (weekend) before but it's been a few years. Please let me know how to get onto your radar.

Thank you,

he has an insider's understanding of both the conventional and alternative
medicine models, the challenges that each faces, and why you, the consumer, is
the one that is really at risk in today's healthcare environment.

Dr. Bizal will have copies of his two books, "The Optimal Life, Empowering
Health Healing & Longevity" and "Healthy Meals for Busy Lives Recipe Book"
available for purchase and signing.

Before his lecture, enjoy a fabulous vegan and raw dinner house-made by a
certified Nutrition Consultant. Patricia Allen Koot, NE, NC, has developed an
outstanding reputation in the Bay Area and beyond, for nutritional excellence
and taste sensations. The dinner is totally vegan and totally
health-supporting, prepared without eggs, dairy, honey, oil or added sugars.

And, it is all you can eat, as long as the food lasts. Bring a container and
take some home with you. Be sure to RSVP so Patricia knows how much food to
bring.

Location is the Opera Plaza Community Room, 601 Van Ness, San Francisco. Take
the elevator to the first floor, then security will key you down to the
mezzanine for the event.

A fifteen dollar requested donation covers the all you can eat dinner plus the
lecture. This is only possible because both the nutritionist and the presenter
are donating their time for the benefit of the community. Funds go toward
facility rental, food, transport and other costs.

How Do You Respond to ‘Veganism is Extreme’?

How many times have you heard the dismissive phraseveganism is extreme? Even if you’re not a vegan and the subject comes up in conversation, you’re bound to hear this knee jerk reaction from someone. Veganism is dismissed as extreme in our culture only because veganism challenges the dominant classes disconnection between what they say they believe about respect for animals and their actions which support unnecessary exploitation and violence to animals.

What is extreme is not veganism but its polar opposite, carnism, which remains largely invisible and unexamined;

  • What is extreme is the fact that a species of 7 billion kills 120 billion land and aquatic animals every year for a food source that is not necessary for survival or health.
  • What is extreme is the delusional belief that we are the only species that matters and the manner in which we live as if “the inferior others” have no interests.
  • What is extreme is the notion that we are somehow “above” rather than an integral part of the natural world.
  • What is extreme is that we act on the principle of might makes right in our exploitation of other species to serve our own ends.
  • What is extreme is the level of violence and oppression that fuels the current meat eating culture.
  • What is extreme is the endless moral acrobatics and irrational defenses that we use to justify our use of animals.
  • What is extreme is the epidemic of denial that blocks the reality behind our food choices, a reality that we have a strong aversion to when we face it.
  • What is extreme is the charge that veganism is irrational and purely emotional when the phrase “Veganism is extreme is simply a knee-jerk response with no rational or logical basis.

Six Common Objections to a Vegan Diet that Keep People from Making the Changes They Say They Want to Make

In developing my new workshop series on Overcoming Objections to a Vegan Diet, I am researching the most common objections out there. Here are six of them with some short responses. More to come in the future.

  1. Habit: “I’m a busy working mom who doesn’t have time to adapt to a whole new way of feeding my family.” Response: Once you get past the initial learning curve, it will become second nature to you. It’s time to break the “hand-me-down” habits we inherit, and replace them with habits aligned with our values of respect for animals, the environment, and our own well-being.
  2. Direct Denial: “I don’t want to know.” Response: Humans are natural truth-seekers. We especially want to knowwhen something is being concealed from us — and why. The truth about eating animals is a classic Matrix challenge. The message of the Matrix is that the truth can be initially painful but is ultimately liberating. For a great perspective on this, see social psychologist Melanie Joy’s presentation.
  3. Pseudo-ethical: “I only buy cage-free eggs.” Response: Is cage-free anything more than marketing hype? A closer examination of the life of cage-free hens reveals  suffering on many levels. Here’s a good overview of so-called “humane” farming.
  4. Convenience: “I don’t see any non-animal-based options where I shop.” Response: Look closer. The options are out there. If you learn more about your true nutritional needs, you might discover that you can fulfill them with what you already eat, minus the meat, dairy, and eggs, and with the addition of a few plant proteins. Check out Norris and Messina’s wonderful plant-based nutrition handbook, Vegan for Life, for answers to all of your health questions.
  5. Culture: “I come from a farming family where these foods are part of our cherished traditions.” Response: Some traditions are better left in the past. Tradition can and has been used to justify every atrocity done to our own kind and to animals alike.
  6. Nature: “Animals eat other animals.” Response: The animals you refer to are carnivores, while humans are not. So it’s not a just comparison. Besides, why compare ourselves to other animals only when it is convenient to do so? According to this misguided logic, it’s okay to behave like nonhuman animals when it serves to justify our ends. Instead, the power of our free will and our humanity should determine our food choices.

How Corn Syrup Might Be Making Us Hungry-and Fat

By Katherine Harmon | Scientific American
These fears may be well founded. Fructose, a new study finds, has a marked affect on the brain region that regulates appetite, suggesting that corn syrup and other forms of fructose might encourage over-eating to a greater degree than glucose. Table sugar has both fructose and glucose, but high-fructose corn syrup, as the name suggests, contains a higher proportion of fructose.
To test how fructose affects the brain, researchers studied 20 healthy adult volunteers. While the test subjects consumed sweetened beverages, the researchers used fMRIs (functional magnetic resonance imaging) to measure the response of the hypothalamus, which helps regulate many hunger-related signals, as well as reward and motivation processing.
Volunteers received a 300-milliliter cherry-flavored drink sweetened with 75 grams (equivalent to about 300 calories) of fructose as well as the same drink sweetened with the same amount of glucose. These different drinks were given, in random order, at sessions one to eight months apart. The researchers also took blood samples at various time points and asked volunteers to rate their feelings of hunger and fullness.
Subjects showed substantial differences in their hypothalamic activity after consuming the fructose-sweetened beverage versus the one sweetened by glucose within 15 minutes. Glucose lowered the activity of the hypothalamus but fructose actually prompted a small spike to this area. As might be expected from these results, the glucose drink alone increased the feelings of fullness reported by volunteers, which indicates that they would be less likely to consume more calories after having something sweetened with glucose than something sweetened with more fructose.
Fructose and glucose look similar molecularly, but fructose is metabolized differently by the body and prompts the body to secrete less insulin than does glucose (insulin plays a role in telling the body to feel full and in dulling the reward the body gets from food). Fructose also fails to reduce the amount of circulating ghrelin (a hunger-signaling hormone) as much as glucose does. (Animal studies have shown that fructose can, indeed, cross the blood-brain barrier and be metabolized in the hypothalamus.) Previous studies have shown that this effect was pronounced in animal models.
The study, led by Kathleen Page, of Yale University School of Medicine and published online January 1 in JAMA, The Journal of the American Medical Association, was small and was not able to pinpoint precise neural circuits that might be affected by the sweeteners. But the results, along with other research, suggest that, thanks to the "advances in food processing and economic forces" that have boosted the intake of fructose, added sugar and high-fructose corn syrup are "indeed extending the supersizing concept to the population's collective waistlines," wrote Jonathan Purnell, of the Division of Endocrinology, Diabetes, and Clinical Nutrition, and Damien Fair, of the Department of Behavioral Neuroscience, both of Oregon Health & Sciences University in Portland, who coauthored an essay that appeared in the same issue of JAMA.
Could fructose consumption alone really be playing such an outsized role in expanding our pant sizes? "A common counterargument is that it is the excess calories that are important, not the food. Simply put: just eat less," Purnell and Fair noted. "The reality, however, is that hunger and fullness are major determinants of how much humans eat, just as thirst determines how much humans drink. These sensations cannot simply be willed away or ignored." In order to eat less (and consume fewer calories overall), they argued, then, one should avoid foods or ingredients that fail to satisfy hunger. And that, according to the results from the new study, would mean those fructose-sweetened foods--and drinks.

Some of you may have attended Veggieprides in Paris but this will be a much bigger event.
The EU Grundtvegans project will be participating.   It may also coincide with the launch of Geneva's first vegan restaurant.  The organizers are providing some kind of camp with cheap vegan food but if you fancy something a little less basic a good trick is to stay across the border in France where everything seems to cost a lot less.
Patricia

You are invited to Geneva for the first international Veggie Pride, the aim of which is to unify our ethical ideas and have a good time in good company.
It is an unmissable opportunity for discussions, exchanging and sharing ideas and meeting people proud of their choice not to eat animals.

The whole event will last from 16 to 20 May and will include:

- Conferences
- Veggie Pride march on the streets of Geneva on 18 May, the start of World Week for the Abolition of Meat (WWAM)
- Letters to the WHO and the UN
- Delicious vegan food
- Concerts by talented artists and a Veggie Party
- Meetings and discussions
The PDF of a flyer can be downloaded from VeggiePride.ch but we can also post you printed leaflets.

Please contact us if you want to participate in the event and/or if you have any questions.

We look forward to seeing you in Geneva!

__________

18 MAY, GENEVA (SWITZERLAND)

VEGGIE PRIDE, YOUR VOICE FOR THE ANIMALS!

International demonstration for the victims of farming and fishing

Billions of animals are killed each year for a wholly unnecessary practice:  the consumption of animal products.

Veggie Pride is a demonstration of individuals who refuse to eat animals for ethical reasons and it aims at changing the current situation in two ways in particular.

The prevailing cultural view is that the interests of animals are unimportant and that it is not wrong to kill them for consumption.  The value that our culture gives them is so low that some even compare sentient beings that feel emotions with carrots.

Veggie Pride challenges this dominant view, condemning the slaughter and creating a public debate on the legitimacy of the murder of animals.  By not using ecological nor health arguments it promotes the idea that the interests of animals are significant in themselves and constitute a sufficient reason for the abolition of this practice.  Therefore the banners, placards and leaflets used in the demonstration will focus on the principal victims of meat consumption:  the animals.

Social repression impedes any expression of solidarity with animals, particularly visible in the almost systematic refusal to offer balanced vegan meals in public or private institutions, which may lead some to renounce to their beliefs or else be content with a nutritionally deficient diet.  Doctors are taught almost nothing about nutrition and cannot give vegans and vegetarians accurate information.  The media mock or criticize
"extremist" vegetarians when mentioning any topic related to vegetarianism instead of allowing a real debate of ideas.  Saying that you are vegan or vegetarian for the sake of animals sometimes provokes unpleasant reactions, contempt and even aggression.  This constant social pressure effectively prevents many vegans and vegetarians from opening the debate on the legitimacy of the slaughter of animals for consumption.

Veggie Pride denounces this system of social repression and calls it vegaphobia, demanding that vegan and vegetarian rights be respected.  The rights that society gives to us are currently the only way that non-human animals have any indirect rights at all and as such they are invaluable and we demand that they be respected.

Therefore we shall demand respect for these vegan and vegetarian rights in particular:

- The right to obtain balanced vegan meals in any public or private institution

- The right to impartial and appropriate medical information

- The right to be provided with the resources needed to raise their children in accordance with their beliefs

- The right to refuse any work contrary to their ethical beliefs.

A petition can be signed online asking for respect for these rights:  http://www.avaaz.org/en/petition/Respect_of_the_rights_of_vegans_and_vegeterians/?launch

Veggie Pride will take place on Saturday 18 May in Geneva and will be one of the actions and events to be held from 16 to 20 May.  All events will be authorized.  Given the high cost of living in Switzerland we shall offer vegan food and accommodation at the lowest price possible.

IN A SOCIETY THAT PAYS LITTLE ATTENTION TO THE SCREAMS OF ANIMALS, WE WILL MAKE THEM HEAR OUR VOICES!
WE HAVE THE RIGHT TO BE HEARD;  WE WON'T STAY SILENT ANY LONGER!
SO GET OUT YOUR PLACARD AND USE YOUR VOICE IN GENEVA in 2013!

I try to avoid Whole Foods whenever possible. I'd rather support worker owned co-ops and farmer's markets.

What's wrong with Whole Foods?

And this from NPR: "In fact, he's a self-styled libertarian: a vegan who sells sustainably raised meat, a man who compares the government's health care overhaul to "fascism" but wants to improve American diets."

Loyal dog continues to attend mass at church where owner’s funeral was held

A loyal dog whose owner died late last year has apparently been showing up for Mass every day for the last two months at the church where the funeral was held.

Tommy, a 7-year-old German shepherd, used to accompany his owner, Maria Margherita Lochi, to services at Santa Maria Assunta church in San Donaci, Italy, according to the Daily Mail, and was allowed to sit at her feet.

After Lochi died, the dog "joined mourners at her funeral service" according to locals and "followed after Maria's coffin" as it was carried into the church.

Tommy, a stray who was adopted by Lochi, has been showing up "when the bell rings out to mark the beginning of services" ever since.

"He's there every time I celebrate mass and is very well behaved," Father Donato Panna told the paper. "He doesn't make a sound."

None of the other parishioners has complained, Panna said, and villagers give the dog food and water and allow him to sleep nearby.

"I've not heard one bark from him in all the time he has been coming in," Panna added. "He waits patiently by the side of the altar and just sits there quietly. I didn't have the heart to throw him out—I've just recently lost my own dog, so I leave him there until Mass finishes and then I let him out."

Examples of this type of extreme canine loyalty are incredibly common.

In 2011, a fallen Navy SEAL's Labrador retriever lay down next to his owner's casket at a funeral service in Rockford, Iowa, refusing to leave.

The heart-wrenching photo of the scene, taken by the SEAL's cousin and posted to Facebook, soon went viral.

And on Tuesday, a 60-year-old man's dog watched and waited for 30 minutes for the fire department to rescue his owner, who had fallen through thin ice into the freezing waters of the Colorado River:

Nearby hunters witnessed the accident and called 911. But while they waited for help, the man's dog refused to leave the scene. Like a worried relative in the waiting room, the dog paced back and forth, trying to reach the man, who repeatedly waved the dog off, fearing for its safety.

"This is simply who dogs are," Dr. Karen Overall, an animal behavior expert, told Yahoo! Shine. "We have had a close, cognitive, emotional and working relationship with dogs for tens of thousands of years, and we have both been changed by that history. Dogs are heroic to us because they live up to that relationship."

Canine loyalty extends beyond humans.

Last year, a male pit bull refused to leave the side of a female pit bull who had been dead on the side of a road in Phoenix. According to local news reports, the male pit bull stayed with her for more than 14 hours.

Greetings Veggie Friends,

Since I live in Oakland (Rainbow Grocery is too far), I primarily shop at the Berkeley Farmer's Market but there are some things I unfortunately need to buy at Berkeley Bowl and Whole Foods Market.  I know individuals who work at BB and WFM.  Berkeley Bowl is also not unionized but their benefits appear to be very good, employees appear happier there, and when they are closed on several holidays (sometimes, 2 days in a row), their employees get paid.

John Mackey and Whole Foods Market owners/management does not allow its employees to unionize, refuses to pay "overtime" and instead, offers an employee a "vacation day" when they are requested to work 6 days/over 40 hours a week, and has fired employees who were involved in the "People against Wall Street Movement" (can't recall their name).

John Mackey seems to be an insensitive, manipulative, and greedy billionaire CAPITALIST who contributes to the violence of animals by selling meat, fish, and dairy products.  Nevertheless, I will continue to try to maintain an open-heart and mind toward all human and animal beings, including Mr. Mackey.

Susanne

I try to avoid Whole Foods whenever possible. I'd rather support worker owned co-ops and farmer's markets.

What's wrong with Whole Foods?

And this from NPR: "In fact, he's a self-styled libertarian: a vegan who sells sustainably raised meat, a man who compares the government's health care overhaul to "fascism" but wants to improve American diets."

JOHN MACKEY

- CEO & Co-Founder, Whole Foods Market
- Author of Conscious Capitalism: A Whole-istic Approach to Capitalism

John Mackey, iconic CEO and co-founder, is known for his all-natural approach to a mega chain of grocery stores, Whole Foods. His stores are, in part, credited with a boom in the healthy food movement where terms like “hormone free” are commonplace.

He’s also taken the formula for conscious capitalism and corporate social responsibility to a whole new level and other businesses are following suit. Mackey discusses the transformative business movement where value rests on something more than just finances. Find out more about the Whole Foods story from the man himself.
