Location is the Opera Plaza Community Room, 601 Van Ness, San Francisco.  Take the elevator to the first floor, then security will key you down to the mezzanine for the event.

"MEET KATIE CANTRELL, FOUNDER OF THE FACTORY FARMING AWARENESS COALITION, WED. JAN. 9 AT 6 PM

On Wednesday, Jan. 9 at 6 pm, at the Opera Plaza Community Room, 601 Van Ness, San Francisco,  hear Katie Cantrell, founder of the  Factory Farming Awareness Coalition (FFAC) talk about  the mission of FFAC, and about ways to save  the environment, animals, and our health through Food Choices.

Katie Cantrell is a UC Berkeley graduate and former president of the Berkeley Organization for Animal Advocacy. She founded the Factory Farming Awareness Coalition in 2010 to educate people about the ecological and social justice hazards of industrial meat production in the United States. Katie has delivered over 100 presentations on factory farming, and her presentation has been used as a resource by food justice activists across the country.

The Factory Farming Awareness Coalition (FFAC) is a local non-profit dedicated to empowering consumers to help animals, the environment, and our own health through our daily food choices. We give a holistic overview of the ecological, social justice, and public health impacts of factory farming. It's useful and informative for both omnivores and long-time vegans.

In the two years since its inception, FFAC has trained 20 presenters and given over 100 presentations to classes, churches, community organizations, and businesses. FFAC also won free advertising on BART, which brought the message of Meatless Mondays to over 300,000 people per day. For more information, please visit www.ffacoalition.org or on facebook and Twitter @ffacoalition

Before the presentation, enjoy a fabulous full-course vegan and raw dinner, prepared by a certified Nutrition Consultant, Patricia Allen Koot, NE, NC.  It is all house-made from quality non-GMO and organic ingredients, totally vegan, totally health-supporting, made without eggs, dairy, honey, oil or added sugars.

The dinner is all you can eat, as long as the food lasts.  Be sure to RSVP so the chef can plan accordingly.  And bring a container, take some home with you.

Location is the Opera Plaza Community Room, 601 Van Ness, San Francisco.  Take the elevator to the first floor, then security will key you down to the mezzanine for the event.

A fifteen dollar requested donation covers the all you can eat dinner plus the presentation.  This is only possible because both the Nutritionist and the presenter are donating their time.  Funds go toward facility rental, food, transport and other costs.

RSVP to (888) 234-1361 or email to:  rsvp@...

Subject: Live Food Lifestyle Support: 30 Days, 30 Conference Calls
environ_ment...
Send Email Send Email

Would you like to have a conversation once every day about the raw food lifestyle and Live-Food Nutrition, with an experienced raw foods coach-instructor?

For 30 days, every day, I will be on a conference call with you for raw food guidance for a half hour!

Each day, the half hour will be split into:
  • 10 minutes where I will give useful, interesting, and scientifically backed information on a topic in Live-Food Nutrition
  • 20 minutes where you will be able to ask questions and get my answers as well as peer group feedback.
This program is laissez faire guidance, in the sense that no one book or protocol is assigned for you to use.  I believe in promoting your individual dietary discovery through your own raw foods trial and error, than to generate dependence on my recipes, my book, or any one thing.  (That self-trial experience is what worked for my healthy transition into live foods, after all!)

You may each have different recipe books and access to different raw ingredients, and still our conference calls will be able to benefit you, since the common thread is raw food, and I am used to working with raw-food interest groups from "all over the map."

All you commit to finding is something, perhaps a raw food recipe book you already have or one you now choose to go and get, to inspire you to get the ingredients, make something raw to eat, and eat it.  That's what the whole group will have in common.

By the end of 30 days, you might like what you're eating, and how you feel when you're eating it, a whole lot.

Some themes of the program:
  • Fun
  • Common Sense
  • Self-Responsibility and Sovereignty (this is no "one-raw-diet-fits-all" program)
Topics throughout the 30 days will encompass:
  • Getting fat, protein, and carbohydrates in a balance in raw food nutrition
  • Basic kitchen set-up
  • Intuitive eating
  • Social life and live-food
  • And much more.
This program is January 11 to February 10.
There's 24 hours to sign up.
The calls will be at 8:00 to 8:30 AM PST, available nationwide and worldwide.

Your opportunity to have a call-in with me and your raw-transitioning peers once a day, every day, for 30 days is available ONLY to the first handful of people who register.

This program is no dent in your budget.  It is very inexpensive.  And even then it is limited to just the first handful of people who register.  This is to select for people who really want to go live for this key period of the year, and to allow every participant to ask their questions on the phone.  If we push past 20 people registered, I will start a new group to keep each group small.  The program price is only $47.  Do you want to register?

yes he promotes it but he doesn't make the 100% decision for the store to sell vegan only items.   The Board of Directors and stock holders all have to agree.   Of course, they want profits....so being an entire vegan company...someone might start one soon....

by the way, Palo Alto and Berkeley's Whole Food stores were former locations of co-ops, they made poor decisions and closed.....

Dear Kalpana Mehta
cc:  SF Living Foods and SFVeg,

Your sad message stunned me.  I met Dorleen twice -- once at a joint picnic between the raw food group and SFVS on Independence Day several years ago, when I joined her raw food friends for a spontaneous 2-hour walk through the Presidio; another time when she invited me to join a hike with the raw food folks on Mt. Tam a couple of years ago.  She was outgoing, friendly, with an amazing level of energy and a trim and toned physique in her 60s that any teenager would envy; she appeared to have taken a drink from the Fountain of Youth.  She had brought the healthiest raw snacks to the Mt. Tam hike--jars of neatly-cut organic fruit and veggies, which she offered to share with one and all.  She ascended the mountain so effortlessly, despite the steep climb and the hot sun that day.  We talked about teaching; she had retired, but she was nostalgic about her former work and she told me of many extra-curricular activities she had arranged for her students.  Since she was your close friend, please accept my condolences.  I can't even imagine her being ill, because she was the picture of health during the brief times I spent in her presence.  I'm so sorry to learn she is gone.  She was an extraordinary woman.

What a shock!  Like Bonnie Knight, I am stunned.  I knew her since the 80s.  We'd meet for the LFSG (Living Foods Support Group) potluck meeting at her house in the Sunset.  Of all the offerings, hers were the best, and she would always prepare many different dishes.  She was such a great raw foods chef, and of course a great host.  She'd always invite everyone to go hiking and to gather seaweed, always making one feel welcome.  I remember sometimes she would walk me out to my car when I was leaving, and we'd stand there and talk a bit, but my German Shepherd would get jealous and bite my jacket sleeve and try to pull me away from her.  She's the only person my dog was jealous of, which I've never understood.

What a loss.  I'm so sad to see her go.

I am sad to hear that Dorleen passed on.  I knew her from the SF Living potlucks and hikes almost 15 years ago.  She came to a few East Bay Living Foods events when we first started that group.  She brought her mock tuna salad (almond pate) that was such a hit we had to have the recipe.  I've since passed that recipe on to friends, one of whom makes it and takes it to work for lunch because it gives her so much energy.  I remember all of us sitting around in a beautiful meadow in the Oakland Hills during a hike eating our lunches and Dorleen brought foods for everyone to try and share.  She was always that way . . . sharing what she knew and what she had with others.  My condolences to her family and friends.  -- Barbara Turunen

Dear Living Foods Community:

I was shocked and saddened to hear about Dorleen's passing. Given personal chaos
and flux in my life these past few years, I was unable to stay current with
Dorleen's situation. Her passing, to the community, is palpable.

I wanted to share my memories of her here, in the form of this "open letter" to
the community.

_______________________________________

For Dorleen's Memorial

Dorleen had been a part of my life for almost 25 years, as we met in the first
Living Foods group back in 1985. In 1986, she was part of the core group, which
became SF LiFE. From the first, she was enthusiastic, committed, and above all
giving of her time and energy, and mentored all of the "newbies" who came to the
group to learn. Dorleen had always acknowledged my Ann Wigmore skills in Living
Foods, and propagated a following for me when I did my demos for the group. She
was a one-person PR machine for me, and for those who knew how to teach and pass
on Ann Wigmore's philosophy and practice, which was so unique in the Living
Foods community, and I always thanked her for her intrinsic belief in the
program.

Dorleen was a leader, not just in her classrooms, teaching ESL, but in group
inclusion; she always made people welcome; always inviting people on walks,
hikes, field trips to Yosemite, and seaweed excursions. I always saw her as the
Maria Von Trapp character, who was always smiling, always positive, always
helpful, always insightful, full of vigor, energy, and capable of giving 110% of
her energy with whatever she endeavored to accomplish.

Her travels even made me envious, even though I've been a world traveler. She
did it her way, and with that, sparked new-found excitement in me. After her
trips, and her sharing of stories, and photos, I too wanted to get on the next
plane and discover Australia, New Zealand, and Iceland. She did Mexico, and
Canada, and the "States" in a way that no one could ever call boring. How many
times did she drive cross-country? How many times did she hike Mt. Tam?
Hundreds, and yet never repeating any of her journeys the same way. Each and
every day was a new day for Dorleen, and she approached each task, and each
recipe and each Tai-Chi pose as if she was discovering it for the first time.

Her sharing personality made every moment full of sparkle and shine. She was
always smiling and positive. I always wondered if hurt and flux, and chaos
entered her life. I wondered if she let those moments in, or whether they were
covered and cast in the brilliant light of positive change. Dorleen was
adaptable, which made her recipes sing with exuberance. She would change them at
will, adding and subtracting to catch every nuance of the season.

I loved her because she was unique in the way she gave of herself. Each and
every time we talked, she devoted all of her energy in listening to me: really
hearing what I had to say. I never saw her dismiss anyone from their sharing.
When asked for information, she always had it: telephone numbers, addresses,
files of past names and numbers were always at hand. She collected data long
before computers were popular, and she always knew where everything was. Her
file cabinets were full; her organizational skills were paramount. I remember
several enormous projects we worked on together: the SF LiFE library list, and
the recipe books we gathered together. I remember the Living Foods "conference"
she spear-headed back in the 90s.

She was the leader with the group, and the group would not have survived without
her energy, and perseverance. New people came and went, and she stayed and
stayed. Over the years, she gave of herself when others wouldn't pick up the
slack, and she never complained. Acknowledging her contribution to the group,
would take pages, but what is left, what we as a group will never forget is her
unfailing attention to the concept of giving. Not business nor money-making
ideas or plans, she believed in giving, and giving freely. That is what I
remember and will retain always.

Dorleen was a giving person, and what she gave each of us in turn is the notion
of brilliant acceptance of life, on life's terms, without judgment and without
hesitation.

Thank you Dorleen, for teaching and being strength and love.

Thank you for being LOVE.

Robin

Subject: SF Rally and Organizing Meeting - JOIN US!

Dear Volunteers and Supporters,

As we begin this new year, we should reflect for a moment on the amazing job we did in San Francisco in 2012. We topped all counties in the state with over 68% of San Franciscans voting “yes†on 37, and that’s something we should really be proud of. Let’s also give some credit to the local businesses and organizations that have supported us, and show our appreciation by patronizing them. You can see a list of those here - be sure to let them know why you’re there: http://on.fb.me/Vk9HEW

Now that we’ve had some time to recoup and relax, it’s time to re-group! Prop 37 may be over, but the issue of GMO labeling is certainly not. We need people to step up and take some leadership within the group, and with the specific projects we choose together to pursue. If you’re interested in being part of this group moving forward, please join us on Tuesday, February 19th, 7-8pm, at El Cafetazo to discuss our next steps. We’ll keep the meeting to an hour or less, and then adjourn to a nearby Prop 37-supporting restaurant to enjoy some good food and good company. Please RSVP here: http://www.labelgmos.org/1469/san_francisco_organizing_meeting_2

Some of you may be aware that genetically engineered salmon -- the first genetically engineered animal meant for human consumption -- is about to be approved by the FDA. The FDA is accepting comments on this issue until February 25th and we MUST speak out during this crucial time.

ON Sunday FEBRUARY 9TH, THERE WILL BE A RALLY IN SAN FRANCISCO to protest genetically engineered salmon and raise awareness and encourage action among folks in San Francisco and beyond. We plan to have speakers, media, and a large crowd present. Please come, bring a friend, and help us promote the event to your friends and relevant groups/organizations. We also need folks to make posters and/or banners for the rally - let us know if you can do so. This is your chance to get creative!

More info about the rally is on Facebook: https://www.facebook.com/events/127099870791582/
And on LabelGMOs.org: http://www.labelgmos.org/labelgmoseb/global_day_of_action
If you have questions about the rally, feel feel to contact Rachel Pachivas, who is taking the lead in organizing this event: Rachel@....

Please also submit a comment about genetically engineered salmon on the FDA website and ask your friends and family to do the same. We need everyone to do this, even if you have already signed a petition. The FDA takes individual comments much more seriously than a petition signature; let’s make it impossible for them to ignore our voices! Here is the link: http://www.regulations.gov/#!docketDetail;D=FDA-2011-N-0899

1. Potluck cost:

Free if you bring a dish (raw vegan dish enough to serve 10-12). $10 without a dish.

2. Dish notes:

We request people to use organic, fresh or minimally processed ingredients. If the dish requires sweetness, please use stevia extract, dried fruits, yacon syrup, and lastly agave nectar. For a salty taste, preference would be Nama Shoyu, Celtic salt, Himalayan salt, Bragg's amino acids, or celery salt.

Over the years, people have expressed a desire to have less intense salt and sweet taste; please season lightly if possible.

Please have your dish prepared. Preparation at the site is discouraged. As this is a new site, it is important that we make it manageable for all.

3. Please plan on bringing your own plate and utensils.

4. Please refrain from wearing scented products as this may effect the comfort of others at the group.

Directions

To get there, start at the corner of Geary Blvd. and Laguna St. opposite the Chinese Consulate on Laguna. On Laguna, walk south towards O'Farrell. About half a block down, you'll see a street sign for Western Shore Lane. Turn right there and walk down. In a couple of minutes, you'll come to a quad with a garden and a basketball hoop. The Community Room is on your right as you're walking toward the quad. We will place our fish kites out there to alert our guests.

Parking is plentiful around Laguna and surrounding streets. The 38 Geary bus goes there, offboard at Geary Laguna in either direction.

Hi all,

Thanks to everyone for coming to the SFLife Potluck Memorial held in Dorleen's
honor. It was great to meet up and see some old-timers from the group!

The hike afterwards at Land's End was a perfect way to end the day - the weather
was beautiful and we finished right before sunset.

May everyone have a great day and a healthy, prosperous New Year (it's the Year
of the Snake for the Chinese/Lunar New Year!).

Best to everyone,

Sharon

and stayed.

> Dorleen was a giving person, and what she gave each of us in turn is the
notion of brilliant acceptance of life, on life's terms, without judgment and
without hesitation.

Date:   Sunday February 10, 2013
Time:   1:00 pm - 4:00 pm (GMT+00:00)
Location:   St. Francis Square Coop, 10 Bertie Minor Lane, #2

----------------------

-------

The 38 Geary bus goes there, offboard at Geary Laguna in either direction.

ways to prevent containmenations in the fruit

http://www.foodsafety.ksu.edu/articles/533/unpasteurized_juice&cider_factsheet.pdf

we've been drinking unpasteurized juices for centuries...

In a few cases, careless fruit workers,,  picked fruit that were dropped on the ground,,,

and just so happened, to have animal feces in them.   And when they washed the fruit, they just so happened not to wash it clean enough...

Again, fruits such as apples HAS to be from the TREE NOT THE GROUND

so I think the chances of drinking bad juice is low.   How many people got sick drinking bad juice?

People get most likely get sick eating meat,, way more often than eating veggies..
