Admission fee to the potluck is free for members, $3 for non-
members. Bring a raw/living foods dish to share with others. The
dish should provide at least 10 individual servings. If you did not
bring any food, there is an extra charge of $5; if you have brought
food but not enough for 10 individual servings, an extra charge of $3
will apply.

Food must be raw - no cooked food, no bottled juices (unless they are
clearly labelled as raw/unpasteurized). The food must be vegan; no
fish, poultry, meat, eggs, or dairy. Also, no processed food-no
tofu, chips, etc. The food should be organic or at least non-
sprayed, whenever possible. Please bring your own utensils-
plate/bowl, fork, spoons, etc.

We suggest that you bring a dish based on sprouts and/or vegetables.
Other things you can bring would be raw nuts, or a dessert made from
dried fruit. If you are new to raw/living foods and can't make a
salad, you can buy pre-packaged raw organic spinach salad (at Safeway
and health food stores), or buy some organic sprouts and bring them.
We request that you do not bring fresh fruit unless you personally
plan to eat only fruit at the potluck. We have had problems in the
past postlucks where many people would bring fruit, but very few were
eating it. The result was a surplus of fruit, and a shortage of
other food.

We hope to see you at a future potluck.

EAST BAY LIVING FOODS NOVEMBER POTLUCK

This month's potluck is on Saturday, November 16th at 6:30 p.m. at 1300
Grand Street (at Alameda Avenue) in Alameda in the Garden Cottage
BEHIND the Home of Truth Spiritual Center. Go through the gate off of
Alameda Avenue to get to the cottage. Read on for potluck and food
guidelines and directions.

This month's speaker is Jordan Rothstein who will be speaking on
ENZYMES. Specifically food enzymes, digestive enzymes, metabolic
enzymes, co-enzymes, phytochemicals, aging, cancer, pain, inflammation,
free radicals, high-enzyme foods, enzyme-wasting foods, enzyme
inhibitors, raw foods which contain no enzymes at all, and what to eat
and what to avoid.

Jordan Rothstein, CMT, practices bodywork, flower essences and
nutritional counseling. A vegetarian of 35 years, he eats like a horse
and has been feeling his oats since going raw.

POTLUCK GUIDELINES:
We request that each person bring a dish to serve about eight to ten
people (if there are two of you, bring enough to serve 16-20 people).
With a dish there is a $3.00 donation. Without a dish there is an
$8.00 donation. No one will be turned away for lack of funds. Money
is used to cover our expenses of rent, plates, cups, utensils, business
cards, fliers, etc. If possible, remember to bring your own RECYCLABLE
PLATE to benefit the environment.

GUIDELINES FOR FOOD:
*Raw, living plant food. That is, fresh fruit and vegetables, and
soaked and/or sprouted nuts, seeds, legumes and grains. Nothing
cooked, steamed, baked or otherwise heated above approximately 110
degrees. If in doubt, leave it out (no tofu, chocolate, or maple
syrup, please).
*No processed foods
*Preferable organic or pesticide-free
*Vegetarian/vegan (i.e., no animal products).
- We ask that you clearly label your dish if it contains raw,
unheated HONEY as honey is considered an animal product by some
vegans. Dried fruit (dates, figs, etc.) blended with a little water
makes a good sweetener for recipes (maple syrup is boiled for a long
time).
- Milks and cheeses can be made from nuts and seeds.
*Please make sure everything is well washed.
*Suggestions: All types of salads or fresh fruit. Go to
www.living-foods.com for a good selection of raw recipes.

Sweet Potato Pie (Yam Pie)

Sweet Potato Pie (Yam pie)

If you are wondering what recipe to prepare for friends that have not
yet been introduced to raw food, wonder no more! This delicious pie
is difficult to distinguish from its cooked (dead) cousin. This pie
freezes very well also. Let it thaw in the refrigerator. Because yams
are available all year long (their harvest is July-August, but they
keep in cold storage) this pie can be equally as big a hit on the
fourth of July as Thanksgiving. Use yams if you can find them, they
are usually sweeter and darker orange than sweet potatoes. Garnet
yams work very well.

Almond Date Crust
1 1/4 Cup almonds that have been soaked overnight and dehydrated in
sun or dehydrator
1 Cup date pieces
1 Tablespoon water
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
dash of cinnamon
2 teaspoons psyllium

In food processor, process nuts until coarsely ground, add dates and
process until finely ground and thoroughly mixed. With processor
running, add water, vanilla, and cinnamon. When mixture is holding
together, gradually add psyllium. Press into pie plate.

Note: crust must appear slightly damp and be holding together before
psyllium should be added, a small amount of additional water may be
necessary to achieve this effect.

Note: For a crunchier taste treat, at this point you can dehydrate
the crust in the sun for 1-3 hours, but it is not necessary.

Filling
6 small medium yams, scrubbed, peeled and cut up
3/4 Cup cut up pitted dates (soak whole dates for 20 minutes before
pitting and cutting up)
1/4 Cup raisins (soak for 20 minutes)
1/2 Cup Pine Nuts (soaked 5-10 minutes)
1/8 teaspoon 5 spice powder
1/2 teaspoon cinnamon
1/8 teaspoon Garam masala (if not available use either nutmeg or
cloves or additional 5 spice powder)
1/2 teaspoon vanilla
2 Tablespoons Psyllium powder

While preparing yams, soak dates and raisins in small amount of
water. Soak pine nuts and rinse. Put yams through Champion with
blank, alternating with fruit and nuts. It should amount to about 4
cups. (If not add more yam and put all through Champion again.) Put
mixture in food processor. Add spices and vanilla. Be patient with
processing, the smoother the better. After 5-6 minutes, if not very
smooth add a small amount of raisin soak water, apple juice or orange
juice to the mixture so it will process to a smooth puree. Gradually
add psyllium. Pour into crust immediately. Store in refrigerator.
Delicious served with a dollop of one of the nut fluffs.

Note: do not add extra liquid unless you have to, it is important
that the pie hold together so it can't be too wet.

Alternative: If you want more intense flavor, soak fruit in juice of
1 orange. Add 1 teaspoon orange zest to mixture. Increase spices to:
1/4 teaspoon 5 spice powder, 3/4 teaspoon cinnamon, garam masala
stays the same, a pinch of clove, 1 teaspoon vanilla, a pinch of sea
salt.

Dear Jcadiz--
Sweet potatoes (and white potatoes) contain enzyme inhibitors,like seeds do;
unlike seeds, there's no way to deactivate the inhibitors by soaking or
sprouting. They should probably not be eaten raw.

Hello all,

It is Tuesday night and I have just arrived from Oxygen Bar (795
Valencia St, between 18th & 19th Streets). Excellent and filling raw
foods that can satisfy and energize you with the living foods enzymes.

Tonight's menu included a vegan sushi roll, collard wrap, side salad
with very tasty dressing, chip-crakers with seed and cherry tomato
toppings and dip. Reasonably priced at $10. Michelle and Connor (the
caterers and proprietors) also prepared parsimmon pudding (not vegan)
with honey. I did not try the pudding because it was not vegan.
Michelle and Connor do the raw foods catering every Tuesday night at
7 p.m. You need to come early as the crowd lines for the delicious
food.

After dinner, you may try the oxygen bar. I tried their suggested 25
minute oxygen therapy using lavender aromatherapy. It was so relaxing
for me. This session cost $15. I also suggest their jun tonic cold
drinks of different herbs from around the world. This time I
tried "Ambrosia". It has that out of this world drink taste that you
can only find in Oxygen Bar. It is an exotic elixir drink. After my
oxygen therapy, Kim (the proprietress) gave me a one shot drink
of "Cosmic Thinker". I love this drink !

I hope to see you all at the Oxygen Bar on Tuesday of next week.

come join Dorleen, one of the nicest and strongest
vegan (raw over 7 years) I've ever met. She's a very
experienced hiking leader. No one will be left

If you can't it this time, come join Dorleen at future
