do a review of your favorite restaurant!

if you want cooked food with NO oil, Hulu House in SF
can do it for you. Peter C. said it was pretty good
too.

Unfortunately their produce is not organic.

Dear Lovers of Live Foods,

Announcing the opening of a Organic, Vegan, Live Food
restaurant in Santa Cruz California.

The name is Cafe La Vie and a majority of the recipes
have been created by Executive Chef Matt Samuelson who
makes some of the best food I've ever tasted. The
address is 429 Front Street, Santa Cruz, CA 95060 and
the phone # is (831) 429-ORGN.

The menu has a varitey of dishes and flavors including
some cooked dishes, and the atmosphere is a bright and
friendly tropical theme. While there I met a few
people who have been eating their meals at the Cafe on
a regular basis and love the food and the lightness &
energy it gives them.

Please support our friend who has created this
love-filled restaurant; Owner Yeyan Gunawan. She and
her partner Dallas are beautiful spirits and have
brought this restaurant to you because of their love
for the food. They will also be hosting classes and
events at the restaurant on a regular basis.
The website is www.lavie.us. It features a full menu,
calendar, and photos.
Enjoy!

Wishing you magic and joy in all that you do,
Elaina Love

Dear All Who Attended Today's Potluck,

A large black canvas bag with a triangular red design on it and red leather
straps was
left behind at the end of the potluck. It didn't have anything inside it to
indicate
whose it was.

Janet offered to take it home since she lives right by the potluck venue, at
18th and
Dolores.

If it's yours, please give Janet a call to arrange to reclaim it: (415) 864

Thanks - and great potluck, everyone - I had a lovely time.

cheers,
Ela

Subject: another Raw Halvah recipe

Send Email Send Email

Wanda found this possibly from the internet, she says
enjoy and share some with us!
==

Halvah

Halvah is a candy popular in the Middle East,
  where it is made from
  ground

sesame seeds. This is far superior to the store
  bought variety. For a

lighter version, make this recipe with the almond
  pulp leftover from
  making

almond milk. (Use the almond pulp the day you make
  it.)

  1 1/2 cup raw almonds

  1/2 cup raw tahini

3 tablespoons honey (or 3-4 soaked dates)

  1 teaspoon vanilla

In a food processor, place almonds and process
  until finely ground.
  Add the

tahini, honey and vanilla, and process thoroughly.
  Press the mixture
  onto a

plate or pan until it is 1/2" (1 cm) thick (don't
  worry about filling
  the

pan, just press the mixture to the correct
  thickness). Chill the
  halvah in

the refrigerator for 1 hour or more, then cut it
  into bite-sized
  pieces and

roll into little balls. Yields 20-24 pieces.

Variation: Add 3 tablespoons carob to mixture.

JC needs someone around Sat 1pm to haul boxes of
literature to the event. If you have a truck but
can't haul, we can make some sort of arrangement. For
this special help, JC will get you a LIving Foods
dinner for Sunday Evening at WVD. call him at 415 552

==
A few folks want to know how to get to WVD

By BART & Bus, get off Montgomery BART, stay
underground go to an underground Muni Metro station,
take the N judah which will be a 10 minute train ride.

N judah train is the best, if you can't take that,
71, 71, 66, 6 is nearby and is slower

by BART & Bike, get off Civic Center BART, there's a
bike route on Fulton go West, left on Baker, right on
the Panhandel into the park and from there on there's
no cars.

(bring a map with you, and it should be a fun bike
ride) the bike ride should take 20 minutes with 2
hills on fulton

you can take Cal Train up to SF

if you must drive, UCSF has a garage that you can park
all day. the bottom Entrance is around 2nd and Carl
(I'm gussing) that's where the N Judah stops,

then walk or bike to the event, (there's a free
shuttle but it's a fast walk)

I hope the WVD web master will save this for next year
==
street parking, if you're lucky might be available on
Lincoln Blvd, 8th Ave, 10th Ave (just don't complain
to me parking is tough, ha ha)

this year, there will be more vendors than usual.
Half of the food vendors are Living Foods, so come
hungry.

I'll be chomping on Living Foods cookies, they are
tastes great and are very filling.
I like Blessings, Raweo Chai and Fudge, someone (c.)
got me hooked on them.

Dear All,

I work in corporate HP holding a very comfortable project management & technical

restaurant somewhere in Mountain View, Sunnyvale or around. I must be nuts to
leave my job! But I am experimenting and very intrigued by this prospect. If
anyone can give me some guidance on how to go about it, it will be great. Feel

I recommend talking to the Living Light Culinary Institute up in Fort
Bragg, CA, since they have trained so many who have gone on to open raw
restaurants. In fact, we just had a potluck in Chicago (for raw meetup)
whose organizer is the longtime owner of one of several Turkish
restaurants (called Cousins) there. He just announced that he shut down
his restaurant, will be attending Living Light's training in CA, to reopen
it in January as raw vegan! I made a raw vegan version of Turkish Sucuk (a
spicy sweet sausage), pinenut "parmesan", and faux fries from rutabaga.

So that might help, too, to start a group of people who could help you
(through meetup.com, or a mailing list or something).

Some friends of mine are also pursuing new dehydrator technology to
drastically reduce the time it takes, and improve the nutrition of it.
Also, there is talk of probiotic/enzyme producers offering seed/nut cheez
cultures, which would really advance the art of it. Add to that the
testimonials surrounding ocean-grown sprouts, Boutenko's push for green
smoothies, and several other ideas (e.g. using wild edibles/weeds picked
for free on organic farms), I'd say there are some great new reasons to
start a raw restaurant using these techniques. Best wishes! JP

HELLO TO ALL!
This event should be a lot of fun. I'll be one of the speakers / panel members,
telling my story of how I created Que SeRaw SeRaw, Inc. My friend, Kathleen
Redmond (hostess of many of our raw food potlucks), will also be speaking.
It would be great to see you there! Love, Alicia

It's been 4 years, 14000 messages/posts, and about 385
events since Bay Area Vegetarians, aka BAVeg, started
in October 2001. Whether you're new to BAVeg, or been
with us since the beginning, please join us to
celebrate our 4th Anniversary (or Birthday) on SUNDAY,
Oct. 2nd at 2 pm.

BAVeg is a diverse group. We have events all over the
Bay Area, as well as different types of events, from
social to educational to advocacy. In keeping with
this theme, this year's party is more than just
celebrating 4 wonderful years and eating delicious
vegan foods. It's about

1) Connecting and supporting like-minded people and
working together towards our goal of promoting
vegetarianism

2) Celebrating what we have accomplished, and what is
still to come

3) Raise Funds for Bay Area Vegetarians to continue
our efforts to promote vegetarianism in the Bay Area
and support/connect the vegetarian and animal rights
community.

We will have our party from 2 to 5 pm (including
recognition for our volunteers and prizes for
participants in the Advocacy Rewards Program), and
from 5 pm to 6 pm, we'll have a special presentation
in honor of World Farmed Animals Day, a nationwide
event to memorialize and mourn the pointless suffering
and death of 50 billion cows, pigs, turkeys, chickens,
and other innocent, sentient animals in the world's
factory farms and slaughterhouses. For this occasion,
we present (as part of the Compassionate Living
Program)

"Campaigning for Farmed Animals: the Whole Story"

a talk by lauren Ornelas, Viva!USA

It was headline news in USA Today and mentioned across
the nation by Newsweek and other news channels when
when Whole Foods Market adopted strict guidelines for
its "meat", dairy, and egg suppliers, and John Mackey,
CEO of Whole Foods, revealed he'd gone vegan. These
changes were a direct result of a tireless 3 year
campaign by Viva!USA led by lauren Ornelas.

lauren will discuss, from an activists perspective,
the behind-the-scenes work of investigating,
launching, maintaining, and hopefully winning a
campaign for farmed animals. Viva!USA is a Viva! is a
dynamic non-profit organization campaigning on behalf
of animals killed for food. They do investigations of
factory farms and then produce campaign materials for
students and activists, helping people change to a
veggie diet.

What each person should bring:

- A donation for Bay Area Vegetarians: $10-$30 sliding
scale donation (we can issue receipts for tax
purposes, just ask). We also welcome gifts of time and
have lots of opportunities for volunteering! If you
can't make this event, but would like to mail in a
donation, please visit our website at bayareaveg.org.
- A vegan food dish that generously serves 6,
ingredient list, and serving utensil (if possible,
please indicate what you are bringing on the evite so
we have a nice variety of foods; fall or Thanksgiving
theme foods welcome!)
- Re-useable place setting including a cup (if you
forget, we will have disposable place settings
available for $1/person)
- Your veg & non-veg family/friends! Let them
experience the delicious wonders of vegan food.

More info on Vegan Food Parties:
http://www.bayareaveg.org/vfpdetails.htm

Please RSVP by 9/29. Please use the evite to RSVP, and
to invite your family and friends.

If you are celebrating a birthday this month, or if
October is the anniversary for becoming veg*n, please
let us know so we can celebrate together.

Location info: We'll be meeting (and eating) in the
clubhouse at Scotchollow Apartments at 203 Laurie
Meadows Drive (leasing office). Cross street is Suzie

Please park on the street.

we'll randomly share with you, including packages of
Fantastic Foods "Tofu Scrambler", just "add tofu to
our blend of vegetables and spices to make a delicious
eggless scramble – with all the benefits of soy".
