S.E.E.D.S. (Students and Educators for Environmental Development and Sustainability) is a student club at the University of Nevada, Reno. Our mission is to create a campus that is focused on becoming a model of sustainable development for Nevada. UNR SEEDS will accomplish this by:
- working with the University and community leaders to ensure that new campus infrastructure and buildings meet silver LEED (Leadership in Energy and Environmental Design) certification while striving for gold and/or platinum certification
- recommending green retrofitting of established campus infrastructure and buildings
- creating/expanding programs that minimize the campus’ environmental footprint (building green, composting, energy/water efficiency, greywater reuse, recycling, xeriscaping)
- working with campus leaders to encourage environmentally sustainable practices within campus dining services
- working with educators to incorporate sustainability and environmental awareness into academic programs of study
- seeking out grants and partnerships to help defray costs

By bringing the community together, UNR SEEDS seeks to aid the University of Nevada-Reno in utilizing the entire campus as a tool to educate its students, faculty, and community about the benefits of sustainable development/environmental stewardship.

Sustainability is an economic, social, and environmental concept. It is intended to be a means of configuring civilization and human activity so that society and its members are able to meet their needs and express their greatest potential in the present, while preserving biodiversity and natural ecosystems, and planning and acting for the ability to maintain these ideals indefinitely. Sustainability affects every level of organization, from local neighborhood to the entire planet.
