Thanks to Dave Povey, four of us (Dave Povey, Mike San Miguel, Kurt
Radamaker and I), went to the Los Coronados Islands in Dave's boat today -
Saturday, 31 March 2007. We went south by way of the nine-mile bank off the
Tijuana River Valley, where impressive numbers of Brown Pelicans, gulls and
marine mammals were feeding on "balls" of bait-fish forced to the surface. The
sky was clear, with wind from the northwest increasing in the afternoon.
Species seen included - Pacific Loon (100 - a steady stream of these birds
were seen flying north all morning), Common Loon (1 - one in alternate-plumage
at the entrance to San Diego Bay), Northern Fulmar (2 - two together near the
nine-mile bank), Cory's Shearwater (1 - one at the nine-mile bank), Pink-footed
Shearwater (3 - three at the nine-mile bank), Sooty Shearwater (1 - one at the
nine-mile bank), Short-tailed Shearwater (9 - nine at the nine-mile bank),

Islands), Brown Pelican, Brandt's Cormorant, Double-crested Cormorant, Pelagic
Cormorant, Peregrine Falcon (2 - two at the Los Coronados Islands), Black
