Even though my family is stuck in bad weather, I called  Taylors Rollersports (268-7397), and they are still having rollerskating today from 1-3pm if you can get over there.   Also, the co-owner, Lawson, would like for us to enjoy rollerskating on January 8th and 22nd, 2010 since New Year's Day falls on a Friday.  So plan to come to Homeschool Rollerskating on the 8th and 22nd of January, and then in February we will resume our 1st and 3rd Friday schedule.  If you can share this post with other loops, that would be great, my computer won't let me do Yahoo.  Thanks.

Families that are in need starts Today
Please involve your children and husbands too. Pray for these families and
children as you are choosing items to send. This is such a special way for
our children to be involved in sharing God's love.
Some have asked how this works. You can adopt a family if this what you are
wanting to do, or just let me know what items you can send for what child.
You need not meet every need of the child or the family to be involved.
Remember Christmas is just a few weeks away and we need to get these items
in the mail so they can arrive in time. please look to the bottom of the e-mail
for more info

PLEASE LOOK OVER THE FAMILIES
If you can help e-mail me at momhaskids@... and tell me what family or child
you can help I have families still to be added

Please join the SW quadrant for our Mom’s Meeting in January. We will be hosting a Couponing Class! This is open to all Family TOUCH members and homeschooling families!

Tuesday, January 19, 2010
06:30 PM - 09:00 PM

Brushy Creek Baptist Church
100 Clay Street
Easley, SC 29642

Couponing Class by Christy Coffee!

...In September of 2008 our family was spending over $850 per month on groceries, toiletries, cosmetics, household items and diapers (for a family of 5).  I became a "Couponer" in October of 2008 and have never looked back!  A year later we are spending $300 a month and have a large stockpile!  Couponing has been such a blessing to my family and I love to encourage others to learn the system of using coupons efficiently.  Come learn how organize your coupons, find out where to get them, how to use sale match-ups, how to get free items every week and much much more!...

$1 per person will be charged to cover her expenses. Everybody will get a handout and she will have some freebies/door prizes to give away.

We are also doing a coupon swap that evening! Bring your unwanted coupons and take some you will need!

Please bring a snack or drink to share.

Everybody must sign up for this class to make sure we'll have enough handouts! Feel free to bring your homeschooling friends. This event is open to the public. (Don't forget to sign them up!)

Please visit our website for more information and to sign up for this event!  Non-members DO have access to the sign-up feature on our website.

Thank you!

What is the earliest positive learning experience you can remember with your child/ren? You're first "ah-ha" (they got it; or it worked)

*************************************

For me, I would have to say reading.  (I think because it was it was an "ah-ha" moment for all of us.) I think the coolest moment that we have had was when my kids started to read, and I sat back and thought, "If we can do this, then we can do it all."  It was "ah-ha" they got it; and "ah-ha" I can do this. That was 10 years ago, and my kids are in the 10th grade now still plugging away!

Rebecca

P.S. I went to the store to buy a pre-made turkey and meal so that I wouldn't have to cook (because this year my kids were begging for a "holiday" meal), but I just couldn't get over the prices!  My husband's income has dropped half this year, and I just couldn't justify the cost.  I ended up buying a turkey to make.  But to keep things simple for myself, I used boxed potatoes, canned cranberry, canned green beans, canned gravy, and boxed stuffing.  All of which took less than 30 minutes to put together when the turkey was near complete.  My kids and husband said it was a great meal!  (I think they were just in the holiday mood.)  Next year, back to hamburgers and hotdogs!  Hope you all had a wonderful Thanksgiving.

We need 2 more students!  Our minimum is 10.  I am posting this message to the following yahoo groups: FCHome, UCH,  HSED_Update, and SCarolinahomeschool.  Feel free to share this with other homeschool families you know who have high school students.  If you DO NOT see your child's name on the list and would like to go, please contact me ASAP.  Thank you!

---------------------------------------------------------------------------
The high school field trip has been set for the Computer Lab/Reference Tour.  There is a 10 person minimum and a 24 person max.
We will need to be at the Hughes Library (downtown Greenville) on Thursday, Dec. 3rd at 1:45 P.M.  Let's meet in the little coffee shop area inside the Main Library building where the large globe is located.  This field trip consists of: 1 hour of computer lab time when the librarian will discuss resources and reference materials, and a 45 minute tour.  Our field trip starts at 2 P.M. and will end roughly at 3:45 P.M.  This is a FREE field trip.

Please email me at vbeineke@... with the following information if you plan to attend this field trip even if you responded earlier showing an interest in going:
  • Your child's name (I'll provide name tags)
  • Your child's grade
  • The parent's name that will be bringing the student and your contact number (cell phone or home phone)
If something comes up and you CANNOT make the field trip, please call me (631-9049).  I will need to let the library know how many students and parents are attending.  Thanks so much everyone!  I'm looking forward to putting faces with some of the names I've been seeing.  If you know other high school homeschooled students who live in the Greenville/Taylors/ Greer area, please feel free to pass this information along to them too!

Blessings,
~Vickie

Rosa, I have a children/youth section on my message boards at
http://www.carolinahomeschooler.com/forums I moderate all messages before
they are posted for safety reasons.

I also have a chat room, but haven't had time to moderate chats lately. I'll
try to host at least one or two chats over the holidays, though. I'll post
announcements of any upcoming chats in my newsletter. Subscribe at

We have FAQs (and answers), forums, a calendar of events, group trips,

Ok I am totally knew here and to the idea of homeschooling. I have a 15 year old
daughter who is being harrassed by an ever growing group of "mean girls" at her
highschool. I am disabled and at home 24/7. I am considering getting her out of
the drama and helping her concentrate on the important things like school work
and learning but I have no idea on how to start or what is required in South
Carolina so that she can still receive her high school dipolma and go to
college. HELP.

QOTW: What are you doing this year to celebrate Thanksgiving
Good Morning and Happy Thanksgiving.

I'm happy to report that my son's surgery last Monday seems to have gone well.  Last year we spent Thanksgiving going crazy trying to control the pain from knee surgery (football injury) and it was two weeks before he was up and walking.  This Thanksgiving, we are happy that he is not having a lot of post-op pain from his shoulder surgery (football again!); and the discomfort that he is having is rather manageable through pain medication.  We are thankful about this.

So it's that time of year where we try to shift our focus on being thankful for things. This being said...What are you doing this year to celebrate Thanksgiving (regardless to what you believe in or celebrate).

(I never think to include my own answers to the QOTW in the email that I send out.  Here's the difficulty that I run into.  I send the QOTW out to almost 200 groups.  I then receive almost 200 responses back, as I have my groups set to individual mail.  Once I send out the QOTW, my internet provider shuts me down for sending out emails for a 24 hour period--I can only send out emails directly through each Yahoo! group....which would take me forever to do one by one.  By the next day, I am busy approving messages/members and forget to send in my own responses.  But today, I remember to include it in the original email!)

For us, the holidays are a no fuss.  My husband works a lot so that I can stay home with the kids...usually six days a week (sometimes seven).  When holidays would approach, and he would have a day to spend with us, I would be in the kitchen cook.  If I wasn't in the kitchen cooking, I was in there cleaning up.  The day that he would be off, I would really see him only at the meal times.  So several years ago, my husband decided that a holiday was a holiday for all of us.  No cooking or cleaning on that day.  We cook hotdogs and hamburgers the day before and we eat them the next day.  We generally spend the day watching movies or TV shows together, while eating popcorn in between.  Sometimes family will stop by on their way to the homes of others.  Both of our parents (and my maternal grandparents) and siblings live either in our county, or in the next county, so they can be seen quite easily or frequently through out the year. We do not go out on holidays, as my husband drives for a living and hates to travel on his day off; plus he wants to spend the time with us since he doesn't see the kids a lot.  Add to this that we live with my parents (to help take care of them), and my husband it when my parents go to my sister's and we have some "just the four of us" in the house time.

This year, however, my kids have been grumbling that they would like a turkey (a Thanksgiving dinner in general).  My grandfather (90 years old) had a major heart attack a couple of weeks ago and my husband doesn't think he will live for another year; although until this heart attack, my grandfather put me to shame: walked at least 5 miles a day and still did push ups and sit ups!  So my husband would like to go and visit my family at my sister's this year "for only an hour."  He has also said that a Thanksgiving dinner would be okay--just as long as I ordered one and didn't spend the morning cooking it--woo! hoo!  So I guess that is how our Thanksgiving will be this year.

Happy Thanksgiving!
Rebecca Miller

Homeschool Rollerskating at Taylors RollerSports is open to ALL upstate
homeschoolers (including the Christmas party) - it's not just for Family
TOUCH members.

Reminder: This Friday, 11/20/09, is Homeschool Rollerskating at Taylors
Rollersports from 1-3pm.

Please don't forget to bring your food donations. My daughter, Amanda, will
be there to collect them for the Family Touch Food Pantry.

Also, please remember the Family Touch Rollerskating Christmas Party is
coming up December 4th, from 1-3pm. Wear your Christmas colors and please
bring a snack and drink to share, and please no nuts.

And, please remember the owner, Nancy, in prayer for her upcoming knee
surgery on November 28th. Would you please consider having your child(ren)
make her a homemade Get Well Card for tomorrow? She may not be able to come
to the Christmas Party while she is recovering. Nancy is an awesome friend
to Family Touch, and this would be a great opportunity to give a little love
back to her.

Thanks so much for being the most caring families in South Carolina! Linda

What do you do to keep your children safe? (Take this anyway that you wish)

Please note that I will not be posting a QOTW on Monday, November 16, as my son will be going in for shoulder surgery.  QOTW should resume as normal on Monday, November 23.
