Got this book on interlibrary loan this week, and it's a very interesting
read, not to mention having cool pictures of scent containers...

_Aphrodite's scents: aromatic journey through experimental archaeology_

Hi!

I'm new here. The Canton of Brackendelve in Michigan has started up
our herbal guild. A nice lady from Darachshire refered me here. Many
thanks to the sinister scribe.

Another facet to your question about medieval herb gardening: what
herbs were average people ALLOWED to grow?
At certain points in the Middle Ages (like the Scourge in Britain and
the Inquisition in southern Europe) herbs took on a political aspect.

Midwifery and folk medecine were officially banned by certain Bishops
(and then the bans were repealed occasionally), therefore I imagine
herb gardening to be a sticky situation during certain times.

I know that during the time of Shakespeare, having rosemary growing
in a visible place in one's yard was a huge NO NO.

Why? Because rosemary, taken in a concentrated decoction at certain
times of the month with other herbs was used by women as a form of
birth control.

Happy days to you,

Concepcione the Gypsy

Hello,

I have a differant perspective on this. Headaches are generally caused the constriction of the blood vessels around the neck and head, and most headaches are caused by fatigue or stress (that's my humble opinion).
It sounds to me like you dear grandfather's headache may also have to do with circulation issues and the health of blood, as well as the trauma from surguries. Doctors consider the blood a living tissue, same as a liver for pancreas.
The best herbal treatment for healing the blood and improving circulation is cayenne pepper. It also contains a lot of B vitamins. The compound capsacin found in cayenne is an effective pain reliver and is used to treat artheritis here is the US.
I'm sure that dumping cayenne on your grandpa's food would not make him happy. However, it is available in capsules if he was interested. It will not interfere with medications.
Another herb to consider is Horse Chestnut. It has been shown to rebuild the vien and capillary structures in the body! In Europe, doctors use Horse Chestnut extract to treat varicose veins and hemorroids. It will also strenghten the arteries of the heart.

I wish you happier days,

Concepcione the Gypsy

However, if he has stomach problems it may not be at all suitable, even in capsule form. I can't take supplements with garlic in them, or cod-liver oil capsules, without getting bad stomach pains. And anything hot like cayenne would be abolutely out for me.

I have not found any information that indicates this-- could you give us
your source for the information?

I haven't heard this anywhere in my researches, and the botanical/herbal
texts from the time of Shakespeare, such as Gerard, Culpeper, don't
mention any such prohibition or even a superstition. Culpeper's _English
Physician_ says " Our Garden Rosemary is so well known, that I need not
here describe it." There is the superstition that where rosemary
flourishes, the mistress rules... ?

Are you sure you are not mixing rosemary up with rue? Distilled
essential Oil of rue was used in the nineteenth century to produce
abortion, and in period rosemary and rue often appear together in recipes
for cleansing the air and and reducing infectious disease.

Almost all astringent herbs, including thyme, rosemary and sage, were used
at one time or another as emmenagogues-- but rosemary is not mentioned
specifically as an emmenagogue in most of the texts.

I wouldn't think so.

Of course, I've been trying to grow myrtle for years as it is traditional
for a marriageable woman in Poland to grow some in her garden...

ok. I'm going to admit to a slightly embarrassing problem. I've been long
past teenage, but I still have acne. I'm tired of all of the chemical
treatments like Retin-A which have strong warnings about being out in the
sun afterwards (kinda hard to garden or go to events in the summer without
going outside) Are there any herbal remedies that could help. I don't have
rosacea or excema (sp?) that's been determined... just over-exuberant oil
glands...

Thanks

Lady Elia and I recently participated in an herbal class at the grand outlandish. She spoke a bit on some of the different ways to use herbs, i.e. healing oils, salves, pain rubs, etc. and I added some info on a bruise balm and healing salve that we got the recipes online through this group, in fact, giving credit to the people who posted the recipes, of course. We each had made samples of the recipes we had made, and passed around copies of the recipes as well. I can't speak for any one else but me, but I had a blast and learned a lot! i came away with samples of rose oil and pain rub, recipes on how to make my own, and even planting charts that told what plants to plant together for best results. Check the archives in this group and you can come up with some great ideas to try at home and then pass on!
  roma

I also had recipes for bath salts and bath herbs that i can pass on as well, if you like.

Blood cleansers like red clover (makes a really nice tea) and things to take internally like dandelion and burdock.  Cleansing the blood will relieve your body of having to expell toxins through your pores.

LOL that reminds me... last week I had to take the train into the city. I
was a bit early, and noticed lots of red clover in the lawn next to where
everyone was waiting. I snacked a little on some of the blossoms and the
looks people were giving me, you'd think I was eating dog poo or
something.

Well, it's just a garden-variety astringent, but it is a period recipe:

"boil the [Rosemary] leaves in white wine and wash thy face therewith, thy
beard and they brows, and there shall no corns grow out, but thou shall
have a fair face." -- An Herbal, 1525, also known as Banckes' Herbal

Take a bunch of thyme and rosemary, simmer in a pan with distilled water and
make a really strong tea of it. When cooled, add in tea tree oil and witch
hazel. Keep the bottle in the fridge and use it as an astringent. The thyme has
antiseptic properties, along with the tea tree oil, and rosemary and witch hazel
are good for controlling oil. Try and avoid alcohol-based astringents, they can
provoke your pores into producing more oil. For cleansing, I particularly
recommend Burt's Bees Garden Tomato soap.

Once a week, treat yourself to a good clay-based facial mask. If you are not
giving yourself enough sleep, try and get more. My skin gets oilier if I am
tired and stressed.

A moderate amount of sun may help clear up zits, but make sure you are using a
good lotion with SPF of 15 or higher. Yes, you still need to use facial lotion,
otherwise your pores will overproduce to keep your skin from drying. Neutrogena
and Clinique make good noncomedogenic lotions.

Tea tree oil is great for drying up active zits, but works best before the zit
develops a head. This next bit is gross, but I've found that the ones that
develop a large, thin-skinned head, it's just best to explode it (particularly
if it gives way under the merest prod) and astringent the hell out of it.

Here are some recipes I use:

SOAPLESS FACIAL SCRUB (can be used all over too! Tho beware tender areas ; - )
It started out as equal parts of powdered oatmeal, milk powder and salt.

It's "evolved" into:
1/4 c rolled oats (don't bother with colloidal...grind it down yourself with the
other ingredients)
1/4 c milk powder (been using buttermilk cuz its what I have but have also used
goats milk powder)
1tsp - 1 tbsp plain or sea salt or turbiano sugar (an equal part was too drying
I thought)
1tsp neem powder
1TBSP rose petal powder (again cuz I have it...for something else that didn't
work)
OPT: Med grind cornmeal if ya want extra scrubbing power...
forgot exactly how much...start with a TBSP and work from there.

Put all ingredients in food processor and process until fine even powder
results.
You'll still see larger pieces of cornmeal. If you want to add EOs or fragrance
add drop at a time while processor is running.

To Use: put a fat tsp amount in palm and mix with water until you have a paste.
Massage GENTLY (that cornmeal can scratch if you press to hard) and rinse.
follow with toner and moisturizer.

OILY SKIN TONER

2oz witch hazel
1 TBSP aloe vera
4 drops cedarwood
3 drops lemon
2 drop yland ylang

The EOs can be altered as needed.
In addition to those you can add 1 TBSP ACV (organic, unfiltered/home-made) to
help balance the
skin's acid mantle. Doesn't smell vinegary with all the EOs.

OILY SKIN OIL
even oily skin needs a bit of moisturizing!

1oz jojoba oil (can use any light oil really, this one just works best for me)
25 drops of the following EO blend:
   30%patchouli
   20% lavender
   50% berbamot

FRESH HERBAL STEAM (if you have fresh this is great!)
1C chopped fresh thyme, lemon balm, rosemary, yarrow, chamomile or combination
there of
4C boiling distilled water

Tie back your hair if its long and have a towel handy to drape over your head
Set out a bowl big enough to hold water and herbs. I put mine on a folded towel.
Put herbs in the bowl and pour over boiling water.
Sit comfortably leaning over the bowl and drape the towel over your head to keep
in the steam.
Steam for 5 - 15 minutes.
Pat dry and follow with clay pac below.

CLAY PAC (good after a facial steam)

1 TBSP kaolin clay
1/2 TSP Neem powder
1 TBSP Apple Cider Vinegar (more or less...basically enought to make a paste)

Options: if after using this your face is very red, consider using some china
clay for some or all of the kaolin (ie 2 tsp kaolin & 1 tsp china). Kaolin has
strong
drawing properties. Another good clay is Multani Miti.

Mixture will foam as clay minerals and vinegar react. Stir.
It will seem lumpy at first but will go on smoothly.
Use all of the paste. Will be quite thick.
Leave on for 5 - 15 minutes. Don't let dry completely!
I've had it crack my skin as the clay cracks!

Moisten clay with warm water and remove using wash cloth.
Rinse well, tone and moisturize.

These are wonderful recipes! Thanks for posting them. Where would
one find the clays you mentioned and neem powder?
Thanks

To the Herbal Zit busters subject, I have a friend that has this problem fairly severly and she uses this great natural mask to clear it up... and it tastes good too. It's a mixture of crushed strawberries and a little unpasterized honey. It works great - strawberry is a deep cleanser and the honey has many properties in it such as an antibacterial agent.

To Harley and the pomander, first congratulations! Also, would you happen to have a picture that you could share? If it will not go as an attachment than perhaps it could be added to the photos section. I'd love to see your work. :)

Blessings, Willow

I don't have
rosacea or excema (sp?) that's been determined... just over-exuberant oil
glands...

Thanks

Great news! I received a 1 at Midrealm Kingdom for my pomander :-) Let me
tell you big ego boost. Especially when both the king and queen were
impressed.

Enough about me, did anyone else enter anything in the A&S this year?

Harley
