For those of us living in the far reaches of the world (Calontir in my
case) would anyone be interested in posting some of their class materials
to this list for general education and discussion? Might liven things up
as spring (hopefully) approaches.

Wonderful! (unfortunately I won't be able to go to Birka but this a great

I will be running children's events for the day at both Coronation ( of
Balfar and Luna) and Crown tourney. Both of these being in Barony beyond the
Mountains
( CT ) I would love to set some space a side for a place to converse.
For something sooner, I will be working at Baronial Investiture for
Dragonship Haven ( held in Bridgeport CT) on February 12th 2000. I can
"chat" then also.

If any of you are coming to Krakow Festivities (in Allentown PA) on
January 29, please stop by the resource table to chat!
Also, I'm going to be teaching a class on Medieval Scents (the use
of scented herbs, spices and resins in period) at the EKU on
February 19th.
Are people out there interested in introductory classes on medieval use of
herbs or would you rather see more advanced ones?

I do not teach as yet, however I do publish in our Baronial paper as often as I
can.
I would love to start some kind of shops or class, but there seems to be little
to
no interest in my area.

Hi!
Is anyone out there currently teaching herb or herb-related classes in the East
Kingdom? If so, what are you teaching and where (or what have you taught?
-- Jadwiga Zajaczkowa
(Pushing for that EK herb guild)
There's been some an interest in the forming of an Herbalist/Apothecary's
Guild in the East Kingdom.
We've got plenty of people interested, and we've had one meeting, and I
think the best thing to do is do some electronic discussion of what we
would like for the guild to *do*.
Some suggestions-- we don't have to do all or even most of these, I'm
just brainstorming:
Publish a newsletter (via the web with print copies for the
non-web-connected)
Have events or symposia at other events
Compile a list of those willing to teach either classes or
individually
Create a Web page with resources
Have competitions
Have meetings
Do something at events, like a 'portable herb garden' or display
Sponsor local guilds
Provide a 'rating' level as Athena's Thimble (Kingdom Needlework
Guild) does
Also, I'm assuming our focus is on re-creating medieval herbal (and
apothecary) practice in so far as it is safe. If others are interested in
other foci, please speak up!
Thanks!

Greeting all !!!
It will soon be time to start all our seed for the spring time!!
I would like to set up a seed swap on the list.
If you have some extra seeds you would like to share, be it herbal
or flower or veggies, please list the seeds you would like to share
and the seeds you are looking for. You can make private
arrangement to give snail mail addresses to exchange seed or on
the list if you do not mind.
This is a great way to diversitize your gardens for cheap and
spread the seeds of happiness.
Good Luck and May your gardens be Green
Greetings,
For several years now, I have been successfully turning my poinsettias. By
exposing them only to natural daylight and no artificial light, they are
colorful by Christmas.
You need a room that gets natural sunlight, but is not used much after
dark. I have a shelf in the spare bedroom just for poinsettias. They are
kept in front of the window so they get the sun's rays during the day, and
no light at night (unless we have guests). By exposing them only to the
natural cycle of light and dark, they turn.
My Grandmother was always successful in turning them by putting them in her
root cellar during the fall months, and bringing them out in time for
Christmas, all red and blooming. Since I do not have a root cellar, I've
never tried this myself.
In Service,
Baroness Laurenne des Vitraux

Dear Herbalists,
I know this is not an herbal question, but a lot of you are
gardeners. I have a lovely poinsetta the I was able to save from last
Christmas, but it is all green. Does any one know how to force the
red leaves for the season?
Thanks in advance

While my response to the guild concept is a resounding "yes, fabulous" I
will not be able to be at Crown and I will most likely not be at the Nov 6
event wither. Please keep the list informed if something is to be done and
when. I will do my best to clear out the Nov 6 date if there will be a
meeting then.

If you set up a meeting I will try to make it, but unfortunately I already
have some other responsibilities for both those events. Maybe 12th Night?

I love the idea , but I will not be at those events.

A couple of months ago, there was some desire to start an herb guild in
the East Kingdom. Are peopel still interested?
Would anyone be interested in meeting at Crown Tourney, or the Southern
Region Arts Exhibition (Nov. 6) or both?

I don't have any ideas off the top of my head, but,
would you be willing to share any of your articles here?
Might generate some discussion...
Good luck with your article.

Thank you, I have done the vinegars, but never had I thought of a review of
my books. What an amazing idea. Take care, god bless.
Lady Isabella
What about harvesting and drying herbs for Yule Season stuff? This is when we
do it.
Uses of herbs in oils, pickling, canning, etc.
Cooling teas for the hot summner we have been having,
Hope this helps,
Andrea

herbal blends for cooking, herb flavored vinegars, decorative herbs for
the kitchen or holidays? Or perhaps a review of some books on historic

Greetings to all ,from Lady Isabella.
I have been writing an article for our local news letter
"the Masthead" I have hit writers block.
I try to keep my articles seasonal.
I have done bugs and planting. Sun burns and rash.
I have also covered a few other summer topics. I seem to have come up dry. Any
suggestions?
Thanks
Isabella
Greetings to all on this list. I am trying to track down what types of
dyeing pots/containers/cauldrons/whatever was used in period to dye cloth.
As a 6-7th century Anglian, I am of course most interested in early period
Anglo-Saxon. I am looking for what the pots were made from and how they
were constructed. If anyone has info to share, I'm all ears (or is it eyes?)
Thanks

From Cariadoc's Miscellany:
"Sekanjabin
Dissolve 4 cups sugar in 2 1/2 cups of water; when it comes to a boil add
1 cup wine vinegar. Simmer 1/2 hour. Add a handful
of mint, remove from fire, let cool. Dilute the resulting syrup to taste
with ice water (5 to 10 parts water to 1 part syrup). The
syrup stores without refrigeration.
Note: This is the only recipe in the Miscelleny that is based on a modern
source: A Book of Middle Eastern Food, by Claudia
Roden. Sekanjabin is a period drink; it is mentioned in the Fihrist of
al-Nadim, which was written in the tenth century. The only
period recipe I have found for it (in the Andalusian cookbook) is called
"Sekanjabin Simple" and omits the mint. It is one of a
large variety of similar drinks described in that cookbook-flavored syrups
intended to be diluted in either hot or cold water
before drinking."

"in verbis et in herbis, et in lapidibus sunt virtutes"
(In words, and in plants, and in stones, there is power.)
From "An Anonymus Andalusian Cookbook of the Thirteenth Century"
Syrup of mint:
Take mint and basil, citron and cloves, a handful of each, and cook all this
in water to cover, until its substance comes out, and add the clear part of
it to a ratl of sugar. The bag: an uqiya of flower of cloves, and cook all
this until a syrup is made. Its benefits: it frees bodies that suffer from
phlegm, and cuts phlegmatic urine, fortifies the liver and stomach and cheers
it a great deal; in this it is admirable
1 Ratl = 12 uqiyas= 468.75 grams= about a pound
1 uqiya=39 g=1 1/3 ounces=7 teaspoons
Hope this helps!
It is very good....
