RE: [SCA-Herbalist] flower and vegatable balcony period garden?

Spring bulbs might work. Daffodils  with grape hyacinths &/or glory-of-the-snow (Chionodoxa) would be lovely. How far north are you?

Subject: [SCA-Herbalist] flower and vegatable balcony period garden?

Hi there, I know NOTHING about plants, but I've been given the tasks of doing the planning on this, even though I have a black thumb.

The earth centered group at my UU has been granted permission to plant some pots of vegetables and flowers as part of Mabon (in sept) and Ostara (in march) services on the balony near the office.

I am interested in keeping a bit of medieval theme going and was wondering what kind of flowers I can plant this autumn.  Is any flower in particular period for spring flowers?  what comes up in march?  If I did two or three layers in a pot, what kinds of flower bulbs would I want?

do I want special soil for these pots?

And what kinds of veggies would good for windowsill boxes and 10" pots?  We want to plant a few tomatos in the spirng.  I'm sure that is not period, but I think easy to grow.

what is easy?   what would be good for us to plant in the spring time?

Suggestions please.  I have no concept what I'm doing.  I usually kill anything I try to grow.
