How about stenciling a design around the entire neckline? Just do the design
deep enough to cover up the white mark and repeat it around the whole
neckline. If you don't want to make up a design from scratch I have seen
some of the premade stencils that might work with a bit of layout planning.
Fleurs, vining, acanthus leaves all have been made in stencils. If you don't
want a high contrast design, do one that is just a shade or two darker than
the base fabric, I think it would be very pretty.

One of our local ladies has held several classes on stenciling garb at A&S
collegiums. She does the stenciling, even though block printing has been
used in several locations within the SCA timeframe, because she can get
better results with the stencils. She uses regular craft acrylic paints with
a textile medium added to keep the designs on the garb for a longer time. In
one of the classes we made cooler clothes and even though we didn't use
textile medium mine is still in good condition even through several washings
and several years of use. I tend to use mine to cover a foot locker nowadays
and use a double thick layered cloth for the cooler.

you hit the right concentration of color.

Goodness, this list is quiet!
Is everyone very, very busy making gorgeous garb, or is the weather in
your region totally discouraging you from doing anything?

What *is* everyone doing?
I'll start...

two short-sleeved Flemish style kirtles, ca. 1495-1515
two Franch/Flemish outer gowns, minor nobility, same time period
two undergowns
four pairs cut-and-sewn ladies' hose
one Anne of Brittany style headdress
one pedimental (1530's) headdress

That's it for now: it helps to get this stuff finished before starting
anything else.

Working on...

A Spanish-style doublet gown in ivory wool. (Just started this--like, I fitted
the doublet pattern today.) I need to find about 50 yards of gold braid for it.
We're having a Spanish themed event in our area Labor Day weekend, and I
promised I would make something Spanish for the event!

I'm also working on a early Tudor gown in hunter green velvet, with white
brocade forepart and sleeve turnbacks, mainly because I want an Anne of Brittany
hood and I need the dress to go with it...

Making an Italian Ren wedding gown for a customer.

And, of course, making exciting underwear for Pennsic. (exciting translating as,
yummy 3.5 oz linen)

I was told it translates as "Let there be monkeys!"

And if you had met my children, you would not question WHY I say let
there be monkeys....or what I am doing besides sewing!

And I would seriously like to know why I can get an almost perfect
fit from Margo's doublet pattern, yet have never once gotten a low-
necked bodice from her pattern that fits. The doublet, I might need
to shorten the side pieces by 1/2 inch to an inch. But the back and
front are smooth, no gaps or wrinkles, the armscyes are darn near
perfect...what the heck?

Mind you, I've never seen the pattern pieces -- when I graduate and get
a Real Job ... --- have you considered laying the low-necked bodice
pattern piece over the high-necked piece and seeing where they are
different?

Of course, with my luck, they're the *same* pattern piece!

No, not the same piece. But the only piece that's remotely similar is
the back piece. The doublet is completely different.

Not to fear, thouugh, as I actually found a Big 3 pattern that fits
right and looks good. It's just aggravating. I've actually had the
pattern set since shortly after they were released, this is just the
first time I've ever even considered making a doublet.

What have I been doing? Trying to get my web site and email back in
working order. The old server died, the new server was installed, and
all my info is gone away, but it is supposed to be there. I only got
my email connection yesterday, but no offline access. So I am still
trying to figure out how the new system works to get everything back.
Very frustrating.

Also doing garden work at my Mom's home to reclaim it from the jungle
of weeds of winter rains, and get it into selling condition. My mom
passed away last year, and we still have far to go before I can sell
it.

On the costuming front:
Finishing off the very last rewrite for the men's Tudor garment
research for Margo.
For my own Henrician gown and kirtle, ordering and preparing to dye
fabrics to use. Planning yellow linen kirtle, orange linen for the
dark red gown lining, and will be doing an indigo dye batch this
weekend for other projects, period and Art-to-wear.

And most of the day, keeping up with one toddler, and a baby who
loves to roll around exploring, all while trying to get my own house
back in order (yeah, right).

Hi - I'm a newby.

I'm making starter garb for my daughter (15) and myself. We've both
decided on 12 Cent English personas so I've made her a shift out of
unbleached muslin cut in long T-tunic style with front, back and side
gores and am almost done with a lovely dress for her out of
terracotta and cream coloured linen. I am cheating a bit and using a
pattern I found from Simplicity but apart from a little interfacing
it's not incompatible with medieval style. It was supposed to be all
terracotta but I'd mis-calculated on how much I needed and didn't dye
enough linen. I didn't want to have two separate dye lots so I dyed
the rest in what turned out to be a gorgeous creamy beige and have
done the side panels and trim in that. I still have the sleeves to
put on and about 20 ft of hemming to do(very full skirt)! For myself
I've got white muslin for the shift and a gorgeous plum coloured
linen for my dress. I also found some incredibly cheap plaid wool so
I'm looking forward to working on cooler weather garb later in the
summer. We live in England so cool weather can be all year round.

Any advice about headgear? I have a full face so don't really want
to go the wimple route :) I like the turban-y look or possibly a
straw hat - would a coif under a hat be appropriate?

Cheers
Winifred of Keyes

However, much of it mentions embroidery in the descriptions.
Does anyone know where such examples can be seen as to design, type and

I am currently researching Persian garb for a new outfit for the
summer. I've had some yummy pink linen that has been screaming at me

ok, here's the short list of what I'm working on - remember that we just
recently joined the SCA so I'm still trying to assemble some basic garb for the
whole family before we start researching and picking personna...

-I need to finish hemming a gown with a circle skirt, add the bell shaped
sleeves (which are all done) and then finish the trim around the neck
-need to finish embroidery the trim on a sideless surcoat
-just finished an undertunic that I need to add some extra length too as it
came out too short (but will work for now)
-lastly, need to make some pants to go with the shirt and vest that hubby
picked up at an SCA yard sale

inbetween all that, I have to finish packing the house since we are moving in
2 weeks and next weekend, our shire is having our first ever Heavy Armoured
Combat Championship tournament and our Royal Patrons will be holding court as
well - if it weren't for that, I would have packed the sewing projects away.

once we are moved, I want to research, design and create some Venetian garb
for myself - I'll need to do it from the skin out.

Goodness everyone certain IS busy! Most certainly can't wait to see some
of these gorgeous sounding things come to fruition! ^_^ Personally between
work and personal life not much time is left for garb. I am working on my

get some decent linen. T dress, skirts etc. <3

It is now 9 days into winter here, but the weather has been pretty
nice for all that:) It's just not a good time of year for other
reasons;)

A complete wardrobe for a woman living in the Nordrein-Westfalen area
specifically near Cleves including:
http://costumes.glittersweet.com/sca/k/5cleves.htm
A rough wool day dress

http://costumes.glittersweet.com/sca/k/2cleves.htm
Full court kit including headdress, gown, Goller jewellery etc etc

Hopefully a thick wool robe for extra warmth as well.

And trying to show how the clothes were stored.

But the writing side of things is not going too well. I've far
exceeded my limit as I keep finding things to add to it.

Look for garb from countries where it is hot. Italy and Middle
Eastern (read Egyptian or Arab) come to mind.

Medieval garb from both these places is very full with wide sleeves
and armscyes that almost come down to the waist. I find the wide
sleeves make a huge difference in comfort. No matter how light the
fabric, a wide sleeve makes it cooler.

How about Byzantine? Light wrap, jeweled tunic. Dalmatica with light silk
under tunic? Lovely turban like hat to put ice-pack under.

This is where I go when it gets hot in AnTir. I also carry a piece of cloth
that has been soaked in water (you actually see them carrying something like
this in their hands in some of the mosaics. I use it to wipe my wrists and
neck. Since I burn easily and don't find bare skin on myself terribly
appealing I like the covered lightly look. Also, nothing can dazzle like
Byzantine but be so simple to make!

If you have ever been to Istanbul during the summer you will know that no
place in the US can get more humid, hot, and just plain unpleasant (I hate
hot weather). Same for the area around it and the Greek mainland. No bags
tied in the middle (me in a peplos or chiton). Use silk, linen, light
weight wool (I can get that which is why I suggest it) even cotton (they
definitely had that from Egypt and the Greek islands if nowhere else did).

My favorite is a light silk tee tunic trimmed at the wrists with cloth of
gold worn under a heavy weight silky polyester (don't tell anyone) angel
wing dalmatica. All very loose, but gives me a shape. There are clavii
down the front and back of the dalmatica that gives me a pleasing up and
down shape and lets me use some boffo trim I happened to have around, but
wouldn't use on Tudor (my fav). Turn the big sleeves into the breeze and
let it blow in around you for cooling. I don't know why this particular
poly doesn't make me sweat like a ... but it doesn't. I keep my head
covered with hat and veil. Otherwise my part burns :-) also the veil can be
dampened for further cooling.

No reason not to be knock em dead gorgeous just because it's hot and God put
you in a first world country instead of giving you the size 4 figure you
asked for prior to birth :-)

Regina

Greetings....any suggestions for hot weather garb that's not a
chiton/peplos? I know to make it from linen for breathe-ability but
would like another style (I'm not the "greek goddess" type).

   Thanks for your help,

Ever thought of going Indian? I love my Salwar Kameez suits for hot weather.
Just like wearing PJ's.

Gentle ladies, I just can't seem to figure out whether or not it's
appropriate to wear modern makeup at an event.
Reason being, is that I have seen a mix of people who seems to staunchly
oppose it as it isn't period, and some who see it as almost the same sort of
necesity as eating or breathing. Personally I'm a bit shy about going out in
public without it. Opinions? Stories?

Hello All,

I wish I was as daring as all of you; I am only working on a not so
simple (decoratively speaking) Sir Coat, and a late period jerkin. As
these are my first real attempts, I will be lucky to have them done
before winter rolls around..LOL

Well, let's see, in no particular order...

  - Fiddly handwork bits on a middle class Italian in my household's
colours, which I have to have finished for the Baronial champion's
tourney in ooh, three weeks *panic*

- *Still* bashing away at the 1550's ladder laced Venetian, that's kind
of on hold but I want to finish it for November Crown

- Rebuilding the corset for said Venetian, I've lost three mundane dress
sizes since I made it, and, well, let's just say it doesn't really do
it's job any more :S

- Various banners and shiny household themed things, including
researching silk painting to make very pretty silk banners

- Just finished last weekend my new Viking apron dress

- On top of all this I've recently taken up heavy fighting, so I'm also
in the middle of making shields and armour and so on

Back to lurking,
