My lady, you and I are neighbors, Swamps of
Atlantia??? hehehe We have fondly refered to
ourselves as being in the armpit of the kingdom:) 95
degrees yesterday 95% humidity and neither of our cars
currently have airconditioning:) Anywho my husband is
getting me some film today to do pictures and I will
also post some pictures I have used as guides, this is
yet another part of the world that has little to no
existing info (country doesnt exist anymore, no
written language till late 1700s, women were traded
like currency etc:)) So my documentation isnt stellar
and I also learned a hard lesson at our last demo, you
can sunburn through lining fabric:)I forgot my arms
were bare (at an event? how did that happen) and what
Ihad on my shoulders was lining fabric, Baroness
Rachel told me "I have heard that could happen but I
have never actually SEEN it!" hehe
I will post my stuff by this weekend for all yall who
are interested.

Muirgheal
Who thinks if we keep this up we will all be flemish
during the winter and Siamese or Roman in the
summers:)

Do Byzantine using linen...I've found that two layers of lightweight
linen is cooler than t-shirt and shorts (and this is in the swamps of
the Middle, where 90-90 days are not uncommon)...

Byzantine, done properly, doesn't fit tightly anywhere...it hangs off
the shoulders, so you catch just about any breeze...

Remember that Constantinople is/was (technically, it's Istanbul now)
in modern Turkey, where it gets pretty darn hot.....

The Joann's here in Clearwater carries some.. first time I've ever seen it in a Joann's too..  but maybe one person in the entire store knows what and where it is (on a roll, hiding at the end of an aisle, in the same section with the needlepoint canvas and silver cloth, also on rolls..)

You might have to order it, either from an Online supply, or from a milliner.

Depending on where yu live. Try JoAnn Fabrics ( http://www.joann.com/ ) and
Hancock Fabrics (formerly Minnesota Fabrics). I also found buckrum at
Walmart on a clearance table for $0.75 a yard.

Dawnkitty, definitely choose a name before Pennsic (a couple of months and then annoy your friends by making them call you by it, and then asking "Do I really look like a ????") Otherwise you will indeed suffer the same fates as Bahrevious, Skum, and Puck.

Personally I started out as Cecilia Jane (a name I was given at my first event, not bad considering) strolled through Maredyff, Branwen, and Bridgit am back (officially even) to Cecilia, it seems that since no one thought i "looked like" any of the others, no one could remember them. Strange I thought, since names and what they "look like" is subjective, but what ever works I guess.

Hi Dawkitty

Maybe it is just me or the SCAdians I have hung around with for almost 20
years, but I have found few people who really got upset with or involved
with another person's persona. If you use it as a focal point for
documentation, garb, arts & sciences, that is great. If you don't have one
and just make garb you like, sing, dance, fight and have fun, , that is
great.

No one seems to mind if you have one era and style during the day and a
different one in the evening. You will still be Lady WWWWWWWWWWW. You can
claim to be anyone, anywhere and anytime. What people will judge you by is
your actions, support, activities, projects and helpfullness. Well they
also judge you on mistakes, relationships, politics and gossip.

If you do not pick a name, someone will name you and you may be stuck with
it for years. Persona names like Thunderkitty, Maynard, Felony (a joke to
indicate she was only 17 at the time) and Digby come to mind.

I just went through a name change/ persona change. Takes 6 months to a year
for most people to catch on. My change was total. I knew another person
that took about 3 years to get people to call him by the new name.

Lady Bernadette

I did, but it is squared off instead of curved, and it just is being
persnickety.  More pressing!

As for the boning--I couldn't find any steel around here, and I don't have
the patience to wait till I can order it, so far now, I'm using
rigilene.  I tried the Dritz s***, and I will NEVER use it again!

Hi there...I'm sorry... but I'm not yet a member of the SCA (had some
bad expierences with some people here... and I'm working up my
courage)... but I'm an avid ren-faire attendee in the summer.  I
decided to confess my crime, stop being a lurker, and tell you people

If I may add to this also pick a name you will
remember to answer too, I went through a few
variations of my name which I picked cause it starts
with the same letter of my first name. Make sure the
name/names you pick are things you can spell and
pronounce with relative ease and if someone butchers
it terribly (first time I was called into court noone
but me recognized what hte herald was trying to say)
you will still know that they mean you:) But please
from a herald and for eases sake, dont try and
register the first name that appeals to you, try it
out for a while first:) Good luck, names are fun!!

As someone who has been told umpteen times that I am definitely NOT a Heather (wonder why my parents chose it for me, then.), I MUST be a Kim, Heidi, etc., I have some idea what that is like.  So far, noone seems to question Moira, though.;-)

Not to sound like a comerical but have those of you
with Migranes tried Excedrine Migraine? My husband
gets the migranes alot (stress induced) and our
household grinds to a stop, he misses work, gets
nausea the whole 9 yards. My pharmasist told me to try
excedrine migraine and its been like a miracle drug.
It doesnt make it go away completely but helps so much
that he functions normally and is even pleasant to be
around. Now he takes it when he feels it coming on and
it does prevent it from getting worse. Anyway thats my
testimonial:) It worked for us:)

I haven't but I will. I generally take a prescription for the first day then switch to Aleve or Tylenol (not a big med taker) I will go by some Excedrin on my lunch hour though! Thanks for the tip!

Not to rain on your parade, but I must warn about the exedrin migraine...
My Nana gets very bad migraines, the kind that can last for days. She tried the
excedrin stuff, and it made the migraine worse. I suspect that is because
excedrin products include caffeine, something that is not a normal part of her
diet. I have not had a migraine since I heard about this stuff, thank (insert
deity here)! Mine are very rare, so I hope this would be a quick fix for me,
but
I am a little nervous about it still. Like most medications, there are those
who
will have an adverse reaction.

Thanks for the heads up. I think I'll try it anyway, if it helps yeah! If not I'll just take a hit of the prescription stuff.

::dying laughing:: Those close to me have no trouble at all with my name,

herald said, "We *know* she's here, she's the Lunch Lady!" <g>

Would I have chosen a different one? Not a chance. The name "Grietje" was
that of an ancestor on my father's side, and "Crynes" was that of another. I
just combined them to follow the rules for nomenclature. YMMV.

I can't take anything in addition to the meds I'm already taking. Thanks,
though. I appreciate it. It's also amazing how many things can trigger a
migraine.:-p

::dying laughing:: Those close to me have no trouble at all with my name,
which really is phonetic if you take the time to look at it. But that poor
herald at Tournament of Chivalry in Jara.... I don't know if s/he ever
recovered from trying to say "Greet-cha Kry-ness." And it took one of my
dearest friends three times to catch a clue--which was confirmed when the
herald said, "We *know* she's here, she's the Lunch Lady!" <g>

Would I have chosen a different one? Not a chance. The name "Grietje" was
that of an ancestor on my father's side, and "Crynes" was that of another. I
just combined them to follow the rules for nomenclature. YMMV.
