This might have been said by now, but Kay Cushing, who I am on another List
with, has to-die-for velvets and silk velvets cheaper than anywhere else on
the web:

   http://bunys-e-fabric.twoffice.com/index.html

I am a VERY satisfied customer. Very very very satisfied customer. I get
all my velvets from her, as well as my velveteens :)

although sometimes it's wrong.... I got some of the stretch cotton
(nominally 94%cotton, 6%lycra)....it wasn't....it was plain old poly
cotton/spandex stretch twill. Not necessarily their fault, since they
probably got it mislabeled, but still. Somebody on another list
bought some of the natural "cotton-linen" and it melted when she went
to iron it.

I love www.fabrics-store.com ....really nice linen, great prices,
quick shipping.

I also use gstreet, although not much for garb (I do early period, adn
the linen from fabrics-store is all I need)

I've got orders coming in either tomorrow or Tuesday from both gstreet
and fabrics-store.

It's probably too shiny for period, although it is nice stuff (I've
got a length of it to make a holiday dress) . Other than that, rayon
is a cellulosic fiber, and breathes as well as silk in a comparable
weave.
Most synthetic velvet is nylon or polyester....

Acetate actually breathes better than polyester or nylon...it's just
that it's extremely fragile when it gets the least bit wet, and since
satin is a fragile weave anyway, acetate satin will pretty much shred
under its own weight.

I generally figure that linen will breathe the best, followed by
cotton, silk/rayon/tencel and then the synthetics.

What I do to keep my sideless surcotte on is to attach a brooch at
each shoulder. Also, because mine is the extra long (cover the stains on
the cooking garb) style, I tuck it into my belt or tie the ends of my bell
sleeves to the sides to lift it up when I'm traveling or dancing. Good
luck!

Greetings
I am working on my first garb just for me since I made the folkways afghani
dress for an international folk dance group I belonged to. I finished my
chemise (it feels heavenly) of pleated gauze. I am now working on a skirt
and vest. My present question is what do I use instead of a zipper for
closure to be more period?

Thank you for your time

I feel your pain. This weekend is one of West Kingdom's more entertaining
and fun events, and I am not there because I have the flu and it's sort of
rainy here. I was going to daytrip as well, but this is the first time I've
gotten out of bed all day, and something tells me wandering around in the
rain like this wouldn't be a smart idea.

Remember, there's always next year. :)

sorry to hear you arent feeling well. :( Taking meds or herbs for it?

I have been perusing the dharama trading company website.. and I have
SEVERE wantitis..!!!!
I am drooling over the silks...
I have been fiddling with a pattern for tie on Italian sleeves, the forearm
at the moment, because I want the pattern piece ready before I mark the
trapunto pattern on it.. and every time I try to tie the mock up on, it gets
major gapitis. Were this things boned? Or were they cut in such a way that
they didnt gap? And Mar.. you did a really pretty Italian ren yes? did you
just tie on the sleeves at either end? Or lace them all the way up the
backside?

In Philadelphia we have a coronation scheduled for Sept. 30 (Barony of
Bhakail).
The fellow I engaged to draw up a new dress for me has gone incognito,
and I was forced
(since I'm in an apartment with little space thanks to my DDP's penchant
for reading EVERYTHING)
and can't find the area to sew in (whew) to order from a catalog!!!!!

I have a wonderful fabric of black with red roses and he said when he saw
it that it wasn't exactly a period design.
Which is a shame, since I bought it at an event!!!! So here's this
wonderful fabric, added to my desire to
go early Tudor (like in Taming of the Shrew, Eliz. Taylor-Burton), and no
seamster. And I felt I had to "go catalog".
It's Tudor, and gold with black trim, but gee, I would have
preferred.....

LOL but I LOVE my chaimail bikini. I never wear it to events - its not
period and besides, all the really great events are held when its way to

I tried some for a corset-top (very small, that stuff's EXPENSIVE) and it
didn't wrinkle or shrink or get smashed down in places. In short, really
good dtuff, but not worth the price for a large project (at least not for
