Hi, well this weekend in AnTir is busy as usual, and so am I. I've been
working on my gourds, getting veggie n gourd starts going, I'm trying to
find a pattern for a Spanish surcoat cause I've found the perfect material.
I have spoon gourd starts coming along so will see how well they work out
this yr.
I've orders for spoon gourds as dipping/tasting spoons, 6 childrens pouches
n 6 childrens snoods, along with 2 chip n dip gourd sets for gifts.
Can't wait for the warmer weather.

I'm making an under dress right now. I hand sew my garb so it takes me a
while to sew a dress together but other than that, nothing new with me.

Also, if you buy soft drinks in the plastic six pack holders, please cut
them up. Granted Children won't be injured (probably) by them, but
animals are frequently injured or strangled by them as they put their
heads or feet through the loops. The plastic may not be "Green" but
they are ubiquitous and it only takes a minute to cut them so they won't
hurt anything living aside from being in existence longer than a Twinkie.

Hi all,

As many of you know I have a very crappy sewing machine and need to upgrade. At
this point it is a health issue, 'cause I might have a heart attack fighting
with the POS.

I am looking at a used Bernina. I know that this is a good brand etc.

But how many of you have one and or have used one?

Do you think it is worth the $$?

Do you know a location where I can get it serviced in the Philly or suburbs
area?

Many many thanks,
Patricia

My mother bought me a 10-year old Bernina (model 1130) more than ten years ago,
and I love it. I have sewn tents and prom dresses on it, t-shirt quilts, mended
lace curtains, embroidered garb. It is used at least a couple of times a week.

I do recommend that if you have access to a "Get To Know Your Bernina" class,
take it. I was upgrading from mom's 70's Kenmore, and even this
non-computerized machine had lots of options that the class enabled me to
understand much more quickly.

I have 2 bolts of velvet up for sale. Hate to sell them but keeping utilities
and rent paid are more important. Both are new bolts, still have packaging.

1st Bolt:
Color: Dark Maroon (pretty jewel tone)
Yardage: 32 yards
Width: 45" (only has a 6"x2" swatch cut off the selvedge edge)
It is a rayon/polyester blend I believe. It is Eagle Brand Velvet by Youndo.

Asking: $275

2nd Bolt:
Color: Hunter Green
Yardage: 30 yards
Width: 45"
It is a rayon/polyester blend I believe.

Asking: $250

Greetings goode peoples

When I started my flax journey, I thought one had to make one's own
equipment and I am fortunate that someone has made mine for me. But I have
heard/read that there is some business making and selling it somewhere -
does anyone have any info or contacts on such a business?

Greetings!

One source that I know of for flax tools is Alden Amos & Steph Gaustad
at Dragonfly Farms:
http://pweb.jps.net/~gaustad/flax.html

There's also Linda Beckley of Yarn Farm. She doesn't offer tools for
sale, but I believe her husband has made some for her and may be willing
to share information. Linda also grows and sells flax for processing.

Hope this helps!

The Halcyon Yarns catalog showed several items for fiber prep.
I remember wool combs, which aren't applicable to your flax, but uncommon enough
that I took note.
They were Not on Halcyon's website (halcyonyarns.com iirc??), but emailing
Halcyon ought to get you answers.

The company is in Bath, Maine, US.

Hi

My sons and I are trying to connect with local sca right now, and know that for
the meetings we must have garb on. curious as to what status we are trying to
uphold, should we dress in only peasant gear? or can we dress more upscale?

what websites do you use for finding materials, etc, anything would be helpful

I am trying to get fabric and beads on freecycle, but currently not having any
luck, and we are on a very tight budget.

oh, photos would help too!

I am looking for celtic/norse style trim and am having a difficult time locating
what it is I really want. Other than Celtic Trims can someone suggest where one

Yes, I know that I could pull out my loom and weave some myself, but I do not

quick, attractive garb for my hubby to wear to an upcoming event.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Thrift stores are your friends. I've scavenged skirts and other larger items
for wool and linen to make into hose or perhaps a hood. I cheat sometimes with
cotton broadcloth, but shh, don't tell anyone. You can dress in pretty much
whatever you can afford, it's best to start out with an idea of what you want in
regards to your persona. Some research will help give you a starting point, as
well as your sewing skills. Early period is less expensive and easier (think
corsets versus T-tunics).

Shameless promotion for my blog where I'm starting on making my own garb for as
cheap as I possibly can while still being a bit of an authenticity nut:
http://sliverofjade.blogspot.com/ I am unemployed, but that means that I have a
lot of time on my hands to make everything by hand. :) If you have any
questions, just drop me a line!

Welcome to the SCA,

Most groups have a person known as a Gold Key or Chatelaine or
Hospitaller, they are there to help you get started. They usually have loaner
garb
that you can borrow for the events until you can get some of your own. If you
havent been able to get in touch with them just go to your first event even
if you dont have garb and start talking to people. They will generally be
willing to help you out with hand me downs or loaner stuff for the next
event or may even have a box they bring to each event for people to borrow
things from.

On a time crunch and tight budget you can usually find things at thrift
shops that you can fake it with. Things in your closet can work too. One of
the first Tunics I ever made for one of my sons was made out of 2 pillow
cases. I used one as the body and the other I cut up to use for the neck facing
and sleeves. My first "Persian" outfit was horribly wrong but I used a
bunch of scarves I had and tucked them into one of those peasant skirts and
used another scarf as a top and added a jingly chain belt thing I had laying
around. My husbands first shirt was made out of a bed sheet that had yucky
flowers on it, so I attempted to dye it which didn't set very well on the
wasn't as cotton as I thought it was material, he hated that shirt but he
had something vaguely period to wear at war. As you get more time and money
into the SCA your garb will look nicer, your sewing skills will improve and
everything will look more period but we all started somewhere and that
somewhere was often with little to no money and little to no researched
knowledge. You are already ahead of the game with the links that were posted by
Chiara.

One she missed for premade stuff is

_http://stores.renstore.com/StoreFront.bok_
(http://stores.renstore.com/StoreFront.bok) Even if you cant buy their stuff
you can get some idea of
what things look like and ideas of what you might like to make.

Please feel free to ask more questions

Yours in Service,
Shoshana

Have you tried contacting your local gold key for loaner garb? Most groups do
not require garb for meetings, just at events.
I get free and cheap fabric at thrift stores, craigslist, yard sales, estate
sales, other SCAdians, and SCA garage sales. Don't forget to look at duvet
covers, sheets, tablecloths, and curtains. I had gotten some free clothes, some
of which are 100% linen capris (plus size) that will become boomers. People also
tend to give away garb they no longer want or use.
You can always try bartering goods or services for garb or fabric.

E-bay has been a great help for me.

If you look at the trims, and it's not exact, look at their stores and you might
find it.

Subject: [SCA-Garb] Trim

I am looking for celtic/norse style trim and am having a difficult time locating
what it is I really want. Other than Celtic Trims can someone suggest where one
could find such an item on line?

Yes, I know that I could pull out my loom and weave some myself, but I do not
have the time or inclination at the present time and really want to make some
quick, attractive garb for my hubby to wear to an upcoming event.

Any advice would be greatly appreciated!!!

Hi, new guy here. I would expect a question like this has been asked before, but
are there any patterns for mens tunics out there? I am looking for something
around 1100-1200AD , full length (tapered?) sleeve, and hem ending just above
the knee. Also, any ideas on materials and trim details for an English/Norman
artisan/merchant class impression.

not sure this is a repeat, my comptuer spit it back at me today.....
Bernina? Let me count my woes!
bought berninia artista 730....... $5000
Did I want to embroider with that? that's another $1000 plus! Wait did I update
my computer, and now I can't use my computer to download designs! Another $500
to update software! ok now ready.....oh, forgot can only really use expensive
designs.........I want other designs, get ready to swear allot, and rethread
every 3 minutes.....

Wait.... classes can help, oh only on days I work and 30 miles
away.........toooooo bad.

Wait got thread? No Joann stuff here...

Ok ready...so I thought......Did I want to sew with anything heavier then
cotton........Opps wrong machine!!! No jeans, no vlevet, no twill thats been
doubled or anything, no upholstery fabric.....no no no no

ok now ready, so I thought...broke a needle...wait a trip to get it repaired 30
miles away......back again to pick it up......oops now its time for its
scheduled maintained...........$100 a pop

I had a janome too...I thought it did not sew well, but this...Its a dress
makers machine and you need EXPERT sewing ability to make it work well. I'd look
into a Paff, but we do not have dealers anywhere here.....Thats my opion at
least. Money not spent well at all.

You know, a woman with PMS and a sledge hammer might fix this.......and its my
Only tool today!
