Finished cloak   Message List
Reply Message #62314 of 108605 |
Greetings to the list!

Well, I have finally slowly finished my cloak. It is all handsewn from black
wool, lined with black-and-white linen. It turned out marvellous if I do say so
myself, and I'm especially pleased with my collar which sits just perfectly
around my neck, feeling very warm and comfortable. It is a heavy beast though,
and I'm not 100 per cent convinced my armslits were the best way to go, but I
have them in and they are closeable.
I may need to add another couple of snap-buttons to the slits to make sure it
stays closed when I don't want them open. Well, anyway, I should like your
input. Does it look alright?

Also I was wondering if I should do anything to the hem. As it is now, the
pattern pieces are sewn together in three long seams, which binds the lining
and cloak-wool at that point. It just hangs down openly at the hem, not
stitched together or anything there. The lining I have done a rolled hem on to
keep the raw edge from fraying, but the wool I left raw since it's not about to
unravel. Should I stitch the lining to the wool at the hem or no?

And finally, the images can be found at my homepage:

Lia, I can't tell you for certain that the following is a period method, but: modern tailors and clothiers attach linings to garments at the hems, usually...

Ah, no; different technique. What I'd been thinking about was this: cloak is sewn and hemmed, the lining is sewn and hemmed separately (almost like a second...
