A friend and I picked up some of these from Merick Archery at Pennsic. I
don't know their contact info. I beleive they were $4.00. They basically
replace the need for a glove or tab. I haven't tried them yet, but my friend
didn't like them too much.

Interesting. When I read her original message, "can't use leather" made me
assume this was a matter of conscience, not allergy...

Lookout for string slap with these things. They dig in to your arm and take off

Greetings

Saw the recent response about the little plastic pieces on the bow in place
of a glove. When I first started shooting in June, I tried using a glove but
found it very cumbersome. Then someone in our shire lent me a bow that had
the plastic pieces. I really like them. I borrowed a bow from someone and
had to get a new string for it, so I had the local archery shop (which
carries some traditional supplies in addition to their standard compound bow
equipment) put them on when the new string. They only cost me $3.99 and are
called....No-Glov. No manufacturer name is on the paper. These are slightly
different from the ones on the other bow, but they work very well. I intend
to continue using them.

OK' I have a really wild idea. Try the thumb ring draw. This can be
made of horn instead of leather. I have been playing with one and
getting fair accuracy. It seems to use a different set of muscles
though.

Deb, most people who are allergic to leather are actually allergic to some of
the chemicals used in curing the animal hides. "leather" can be specific to
cattle hide or generic to any animal hide that is cured for use. Actually, your
deer hide idea would be ggood if the person could get hold off some "brain
tanned" deerhide. This is the method used by the american indian.

Martin Archery X-200 ($160) or Victory Recurve ($190) available at
http://www.fsdiscountarchery.com/ or check e-bay and other sites. I've done a
bit of research on inexpensive recurves and these are two of the best IMHO for
the price.

YMMV,

Try, also, Traditional Archery Supply. http://www.oldbow.com/ look through
their recurve selection. on this page,
http://www.oldbow.com/recurve_bows_page_3.htm you can find the Nirk Rebel,
you select the poundage, from 20 to 55#. An archer in my shire owns one,
they are much better than they look in the picture and make for a very sweet
shooting recurve. And they only cost $135.00, well worth the money. And
Nirk is now owned by Martin Archery. Eric, at Traditional Archery Supply,
is very helpful, and knowledgeable.

Hope this helps,
Simon Hondy

A shooting tab made out of whatever material you have at hand will get
you shooting soonest. They're easy to make, you'll end up making several
I bet.
One made from truck innertube should stand up for a long time, you could
also try upholstery vinyl. The smoother the surface of the tab, the better.

Chris,

I currently use a 60" 40# PSE Impala, that I bought new for 177.00.
It
is a sweet shooting thing. I didn't buy it online, but at a local
dealer, so I imagine that if you find one online, it might just be a
few dollars less.

This was my first bow, and the start of my foray into archery, and I
have enjoyed every minute since.

Christopher,

Check out Alchemical Transmutations, the prodmaker Jim Koch's site. he
sells a 75# straight prod, 34.5" long, which may work here. I suspect
you'll need to pad the prod center with leather, as it is lots thinner than
the original fiberglass. Understand, I have not tried this, but you can
take the inside height of your bow's prod holder with calipers, then compare
that clearance to the height of the prod at the center. Jim keeps a chart
with all that info on his site.

Has anyone given a formal class in Archery Marshalling? If so, I'd
love some notes/info on formal classes. I realize some rules are
slightly different from kingdom to kingdom, but some of my Arhcers
have asked for more formal classes and I find myself at a loss.

I have taught them multiple times, here in Atlantia. I think I may still
have some of my notes --- they would all be in hardcopy at this time,
since they preceeded my home computer days :) If I can dig them up,
I will try to put them together, if you like (and hopefully add a bit,
that
was otherwise done off the cuff)
Where are you, though? (not that basic marshalling techniques should
vary)

I have never seen a formal class in Archery Marshalling in the SCA other than
the snippets I have put together for StagCons. If you would like such a class,
let me know what time frame you are looking at and I will put together such a
class. Much of the details will come from the handbook, but I am also a
certified range officer with the NAA and have some additional information from
that training. We can look at teaching archers how to inspect their own
equipment, how to set up a safe range, how to run the line, etc. If this is
the sort of thing you are looking for let me know.

Greetings
I've given such classes in the past. What the course has developed into
is a class on equipment inspection and maintenence, which I continue to
offer every Pennsic. The other aspects of Marshalling (range setup and
takedown, and running a line) we have found are more conducive to
on-the-spot training, rather than formal classroom presentation. I could
easily work up a set-up class and a line marshalling class, though.

wow, I'm not sure who's offer I should take up. I'm in the Kingdom
of the outlands, barony of dragonsspine. I'm trying to set up
classes in many different subjects to bring us through the winter.
So far I have an arrow making class that will be taught at our toys
for tots tourney, a bow making class TBA, and several others in the
works.

Ailinn: I hate to ask you to do anything more for me, you've done so
much. It would, however mean more to us, seeing as you are our AG
and know our rules here.

I guess I realized I missed teaching a marshall some things, and have
a new one in trainging. I'd like to train him right and get others
refreshed.

Valorie,
Getting archery started from scratch here in Artemisia, I have
personally taught several classes on Marshaling Target Archery.
What I did was go through the Artemisian Archery Handbook section by
section and discussed the important points with regard to line safety,
equipment, what to look for in defective equipment (with my scary bow
collection as good examples), etc. Let me know if you would like more
info.

Annual Sponsorship of this list is now available at the Medieval
Mart auction (starting bid $60 to cover eGroups annual "no-ads"
fee).

http://www.medievalmart.com/

* Individuals, guilds, households, or groups of any kind may bid
(groups will need a single representative to place thier bids).

* The winner may place a sponsor message on the list tagline
(Some restrictions apply: this is intended as "bragging rights"
sponsorship -- not advertising. Sponsor taglines may contain
basically the name of the sponsor and/or a hypertext link to a list
related website only)

* The winner may place a 125x125 ad graphic on the Chat/eMail
page at Medieval Mart for the duration of the sponsorship.

Bidding is now open and will close October 30th.

Unto the good Gentles of Bryn Gwlad do I extend greetings! May this missive
find you snug and warm on a inhospitable evening.

As to tomorrow's (or today's if you are reading this on the 8th) Archery
Practice on Sunday the 8th, let us use some wisdom. I shall watch the
weather most closely, but if at 1:30-ish it is raining, we WILL NOT have an
Archery Practice. If it is just overcast (as it was today), we shall give
it a go. Due to the wet wind blowing, dress dryly and warmly. I do not
want anyone catching a cold (Baronial is coming up! We need all of you
well!!).

We shall be practicing (weather permitting) both combat and target archery.
So bring your bows, your arrows, a waterproof pavilion and something warm to
wear. I would like each one of those current Society members to shoot for
IKAC score (and mayhap IKCAC as well) so we can more people shown on the
list besides Pug and Tutahl.

I hope to see all of you there!!
Stay dry and healthy!!

In Service to Barony and Kingdom,
Alfred Huddlestone
Archery Marshal
Barony of Bryn Gwlad

James, I think they are tad far for a day trip...

http://www.bryn-gwlad.org/

Well, I consider Austin, TX to be a tad far, at least.

Are there any other archery practices going on in in the Ohio/Indiana/Kentucky
region for other groups?

Havehold (Dayton, OH) has one on Mondays, Unicorn (Oxford, OH) has one on
Tuesdays, any others?
