Try "Longbow, a social and military history" by Robert Hardy. It has a lot of
information on the equipment used.

Off the top of my head I can point you towards three period references.

Research the Chapter House Arrow. It texts I have read say that is was
made of either Ash or Birch. That is a little earlier than you want
probably the second half of the hundred hears war.

Also research the Mary Rose. The information I have is that the Mary
Rose shafts were mainly of Poplar with others made of Beech, Ash, and
Hazel. http://www.maryrose.org/ship/bows2.htm The Mary Rose is 1545
so perfect for the time period you are researching.

Read Toxophilus. Ascham is from the same period and definitely
preferred Ash. Here is part of what he said:

"...as Brafell, Turkiewood, Fusticke, Sugarcheste, and such like, make
dead, heavy lumpish, hobbling shafts. Again Hulder, black thorne, Serues
tree, Beche, Elder, Afpe, and Sallow, either for their weakness or
lightness, make hollow, starting, studding, gadding shafts. But Birche,
Hardbeme, some Oak, and some Ash, being both strong enough to stand in a
bow, and also light enough to fly far, are best...Yet as concerning
sheaf Arrows for war (as I suppose) it were better to make them of good
Ash, and not of Afpe, as they be nowadays"

There ya go.

I've been looking at Black Widow. Are they as good as they appear, or
is it just good marketing?

I'm looking to upgrade from my starter to a nice longbow, but there
are just too many choices. Any consensus on what works best for SCA
tournaments and practice?

Toxophilus provides an excellent period source for arrow woods. It is available
on line and fits right into the time period you want.

http://www.archive.org/details/toxophilus00aschiala

I would also check out the Mary Rose artifact database. It gives both wood used
and dimensions of the arrows and arrow fragments found on the Mary Rose.

Your Excellency,

When our Barony began to have a Youth Archery Champion (age14 and under)
some 5 years ago, my household began the tradition of providing a prize to the
winner of a dozen matched arrows made by one of our local fletchers. Perhaps
you could begin a baronial or household award for promising young archers.

Thank you, very much for the feedback. I wanted information before I shot myself
in the foot. He is the youngest in AEthelmearc and one of the youngest in the
Society. If he manages to break 80 again, which I don't doubt that he will, I
want something a little more than just a badge and a handshake when he is called

That is a grand idea! I'd bet those young archers love their new arrows! What
more could a young archer want than to have his or her accomplishment with the
bow & arrow recognized so?

Greetings to the list! I hope to make some new friends! Please allow me to
introduce myself. My name is Omelan and I reside in the East Kingdom. I have
been an archer for many years, the last 18 in the SCA.
My longbow was made by Jay St. Charles (Pacific Yew Inc) Hickory backed Ipe,
horn tipped, 76 inches long with a draw weight of 65lbs.(my baby) I shoot Poplar
arrows with cow horn reinforced self nocks. I like to thread wrap the fletch
with linen and coat the wraps with a mixture of hide glue and home grown
verdigris. Brass points glued and pined. I don't use a quiver much but my arrow
bag is like those illustrated in the book English Longbowman 1330-1515. On
occasion I teach arrow making / building and bowstrings.
Thank You for allowing me to join this wonderful list!

Greetings, I'm in the Ansteorra area, and am looking for some arrows that will
satisfy the requirements for period shoots. These will also serve as a basis
for me to get an idea of what the arrows I plan to make in the future should be
like (as far as requirements go)
Any leads to websites or any local merchants on this forum would be awesome.

Hi,

I'm new to the group and have been shooting for a couple of months now with
borrowed arrows.  Can anyone suggest where I can find a decent set of arrows for
my first set?  Hoping for nothing hugely expensive, although I know all good
ones aren't cheap.

Thanks in advance for any suggestions!

I'm in Wiesenfeuer (Yukon, OK actually)
Right now, the arrows I'm using pass local armor inspection, (wood, target
points, plastic feather-style vanes), but I'd like to get more into the fancier
fletchings and ultimately making my own arrows, as well as my own bow (babysteps
first!)

greetings

you might want to speak with his excellency elric , or hl thomas quilliam, or
even the local missile marshal ian mac ewen , to see who in your area is
currently building period arrows , or perhaps they could teach you to build them
: )
i know that there are several people in northkeep that make both period and open
division style arrows , and would be happy to help you learn to build them as
well , but ask around , i'm sure wiesenfeuer has several people as well = )
another option would be to go to events with archery and ask around, many
archers in ansteorra make their own arrows, and some make their bows , and
quivers, etc as well.
hope that helps.

I'm in Wiesenfeuer (Yukon, OK actually)
Right now, the arrows I'm using pass local armor inspection, (wood, target
points, plastic feather-style vanes), but I'd like to get more into the fancier
fletchings and ultimately making my own arrows, as well as my own bow (babysteps
first!)

Interesting that they passed inspection, since the SCA target archery
rules require feather fletching.

"4. Fletched arrows and bolts shall have feathers or other pre-17th
century material. Plastic vanes are
not allowed."

I am glad that you were able to shoot and are now looking for more
period arrows.

Hi to both Svana & Duncan. Please fogive me for putting these two posts
together. I've been doing SCA archery for only a very short time, as well, so,
I'm still a newbie, too, I guess.

I can tell ya'll not from actual experience but from research, for arrow
supplies I'd reccomend 3rivers.com & for finished arrows elkridgearchery.com. I
met someone with a set of their period arrows (after I found them online &
started drooling over them) & they were IMO very well made & very beautiful. You
can also find finished arrows on ebay, I've seen them, I have a couple of
sellers in my watch list, though I won't attest to that quality because I've not
laid hands on a set.

You will find arrow making equipment & supplies to be a lot of pocket to start
with if you do everything at once, but you'll have your own stuff to do your own
arrows. Or you can spend a little less to have someone else do them for you, if
it's not your forte.

Me? I'm trying to put my own supplies together to do mine myself. Depending on
how many one goes through, that's the cheaper path and it's a good idea to have
your own repair supplies.

I am sure they just passed a "safety inspection" and made an exception
(allowed by the rules) since he is a newbie and let him use them for
_*practice*_.

Of course plastic vanes should not be allowed for competition, or
submitting RR or IKAC scores.

i believe the local marshal lets newbies learn , and practice with non sca legal
arrows untill they can get propper gear , he just doesn't turn in scores for
them , this allows newbies with higher poundage bows to participate and practice
since most loaner arrows are in the lower poundage range.

How many times have these arrows been used in SCA competition? At my first
competition, I had nothing but carbon arrows I'd bought a couple of weeks prior
& was allowed to shoot. I'm sure, though, had it been a RR or such, that my
score would've done nothing for rank because they were carbon/vane instead of
wood/feather.

another option is to borrow , or use another archers equipment while you are
learning to make arrows , this allows you to spread out your equipment / supply
purchases, but still allows you to make period arrows .
and yes, both suppliers mentioned are good reputable companies in my experience.

I highly recommend 3Rivers Archery.  I bought my arrow making tools and
materials from there, and I received them in two or three business days (I live
in the same state where they are located).  I am very impressed with them.
