Talk archery up every chance you get-dance practice, demos, meetings,
fighting practice and local events. Have your herald annouce the times
and place of your shoots at local events. Show up at places with your
archery gear and talk about archery. Write a newsletter article on
archery for your group and barrony. If your group has a web site, make
sure archery information (where and when for practices are there). Print
flyers and bring them with you.....These are a few ideas that might
help......William Ross of Skye

As near as I can tell, before I joined our local practice group, archery was
something the fencers
did while waiting for enough fencers to make a good melee to show up. This has
the result that
most of our fencers "dabble" in archery, except for us rabid archers who
"dabble" in fencing. In
order to solidify the relationship, we're trying the "tourney prizes" tack. For
instance, at our
next fencing event on January 3 <insert shameless plug> A benefit for the
Plattsburgh, NY
Salvation Army where we hold winter fencing practice </shameless plug>, there
will be the usual
T-shirts, gear, bucklers, handmade-by-moi-parry-cloak, and a fabulous set of
matched arrows (also
handmade by moi), as well as a set consisting of a brocade longbow sock, a pair
of string keepers,
a spare longbow string, and a bow-hand protector, all handmade by moi. The idea
being that fencers
who possess archery gear will be that much more likely to use it and thus become
regular archers.
Besides, I just like to make stuff.

Oddly enough, a bow is the easiest thing to acquire out here. Every garage sale
seems to have a
spiffy recurve they sold just before I got there.

If the archers stick around for feast at events, one very public prize you could
award might be a
handful of arrows to the archer who lost or broke the most arrows that day. And
a good gag prize
guaranteed to get people to remember your archery events might be the public
awarding of something
silly but useful and highly visible like a longbow sock made to resemble Kermit
the Frog, or
string keepers made to look like tribbles with eyes.

Another way I drum up interest in archery is by (for me) quietly (and I can hear
those of you who
know me laughing) Making Stuff where people can see it at events. I plunk my
unmistakable self
down with a pile of supplies and explain what I'm doing to anyone who wanders
too close.

My advice is to run away...run far away. I placed an order with them and haven't
heard from them in ages despite my repeated attempts to contact them. In my

That's really a shame. I received a very nice bow from them a year or two
ago; shoots nice and for a reasonable price with reasonable service. They
were very communicative with me at that time.

I know this individual. She has tried to get in touch with them
repeatedly, both by email and phone. She ordered a bow over a year ago and
they cashed the check at the time. Still she hasn't heard anything from
them a year later. Needless to say she is not very happy with the customer
service of this company.

The bows on the website look relatively well-made for the price.
It's too bad the customer service is so terrible. I think I'll
inquire if they have anything in stock I would consider purchasing
and go from there.

Thanks for the help,
Chris

Keep in mind that there are sumptuary laws to take into consideration with some
of these. Some are to be worn only by Kingdom Officers and are not populous
badges. Others, such as those of the Archers of the East, are only to be worn
by those of designated rank (IIRC). I know in Caid that we do not yet have a
badge for any archer who is a member of the populous, only for the Kingdom
Master of Archers.

Actually, these are not sumptuary laws but rather heraldic regulations.
Sumptuary laws pertain to who may wear what materials and styles while
heraldic regulations control who may display what imagers or symbols.

Actual there is a badge for the archers of Caid to wear. Let see
here. Caid archers handbook, page 22, under the Academy of Archers:

"2. Promoting the Image of Archery in Caid

       a. All Archers in Caid are encouraged to display the Badge of
the Academy of Archers to signify their membership and to provide a
visual reminder to the Kingdom of participation of archers at non-
archery events."

It is my understanding that the badge is currently going through the
review process with the heralds, though I have no idea what it looks
like.

Carolus, as the Master of Archers for Caid, may have more
information.

scores from the East this year. It is a very simple shoot and is set

do this I will be available by appointment to marshal this.

We've talked at length...there's been a few designs floated around, but that
"Badge of the Academy" has been there since the last rewrite of the handbook
since 1999 IIRC, and it's only now in the design process...so for now, it's just
the mention, but heraldically, nothing in the books yet! (Maybe it's been
submitted, but I haven't heard, although I did see a few of the ideas that
Carolus was working on a few months back)

That sounds all too familiar. Around here in Starkhafn the big talk
is Estrella War. Though getting people out to practice here is just
as difficult. When you ask people about archery, they sound very
excited. When you try to actualy do something, they tend to flake.

I am hoping that things change in the new future. We finaly have a
warented Range Marshal, so we can schedual an "official" practice.
So with any luck that will help get people out to the range more
often.

I have offered to do a little class on making flemish strings, or
fletching, but so far no one has show any interest localy. But I am
keeping my spirits up and trying to find a way to suck more people
in to the adiction that is archery.

I knew the feeling. When I lived in Merdies, I was the
only archer in the area (Valdosta, GA) I had some
interest from the fighters so I had set up a range so
they could shoot afterwards with my spare gear.
Unfortuantely I moved back to the East before I could
really get it going on its own and also did not get
much help at the time from the powers that be in that
Kingdom. So just keep up the hard work and I am sure
you will get it going. In regards to Nad in Starkhafn,
I may be moving to your area soon as my niece just
moved out there and jobs here are getting far and few
between.

I have offered to do a little class on making flemish strings, or
fletching, but so far no one has show any interest localy. But I am
keeping my spirits up and trying to find a way to suck more people
in to the adiction that is archery.

Greetings fellow archers,

I am curious if any groups out there in the known world have ever hosted
a weekend archery symposium. If so how did it work? what was offered? is it
something that happens anually?

Ansteorra has a regular (we try for yearly) event called the "Academy
of the Bow". A day full of archery related classes and training. For
the last several years we have also held our spring/summer Royal
Huntsman tournament at the event. Attendence of course depends on
time, location, can organization but generall it is fairly well receieved.

Caid has an Archery track in its semi-annual Collegia. We have slots for
up to 7 classes over 2 days. If the site has facilities available we
offer shooting clinics and have a variety of classes in event
administration, equipment making, basic getting started and coaching
info, and social aspects including history, legends, place of the archer
in society, etc. Works well.

Greetings.

My home Barony (Aquaterra, AnTir) used to host an Archery Symposium once a
year. It was a single day teaching event, with individual classes that covered
the history of Western European archery, how to's on bows, arrows, strings,
the physics of archery and the like. The last time it was held (about 7 years
ago), all the Masterbowman in attendance were asked to take groups of
lesser-experienced archers and work with them on shooting technique. At the
beginning
of the day a single Royal Round was shot to establish a baseline. At the end
of the day, another was shot. If memory serves, every single score improved,
some quite dramatically. To this day I'll run into folks at events who tell
me what a wonderful experience this was for them.

I am currently working on resurrecting Archery Symposium as an event. I
plan, however, to expand it to two days, with the first day being about classes
and the second day about shooting. Wish me luck.

I haven't heard of a weekend long thing, but here in Pentamere we run an
archer's college that lasts most of a Saturday. It usually consists of
shooting, a regional archery meeting, MIT training and some classes. It
can be as much or as little of these things as you want. Shooting is the
biggest draw, especially in the winter months, but classes are also a big
plus. Hope this helps.......William Ross of Skye

I am told that the original meaning of the word Symposium in Greek is
a "drinking party." Perhaps a beer and BS session after the formal
classes? Archers love to tell tales. Just a suggestion...
