Help!

I'm in charge of communications for the Red Cross's first-aid stations
at the Nike Women's Marathon on Sunday, and enough hams who had
volunteered have had to cancel at the last minute, and I need another 5
hams or so.

Why should you help us out? Let me count the ways:

     1. You get to watch 25,000 women in good enough shape to run 26
miles, run 26 miles to raise money for breast cancer research.
     2. We'll feed you three free meals: a continental breakfast, and two
        lunches
     3. You get to practice radio communications in a manner that is great
        training for a real disaster

Seriously, this is a great event, and one of the best ways to practice
your skills and see how your equipment holds up in something a bit more
demanding than an hour-long weekly net.

If you're interested, here are the details:

      * We need to be at San Francisco Pier 27 by 3:30 am (carpools are
being organized from several BART stations)
      * We'll be done by 2 or 3pm

I am giving away my trusty Sony CPD G500 21-inch CRT monitor free to a good
home. The only caveat is that you have to pick it up here at my home in Santa
Clara. It weighs about 50 pounds.

The monitor works fine; we are getting ready to move and I don't have room for
it any more.

Specs for the monitor are here:
http://esupport.sony.com/US/perl/model-documents.pl?mdl=CPDG500

Send me email at kagaugler@... if you want it and we can arrange pickup.

My thanks to everyone who has volunteered this year.  We are still a bit short.  As you can see from the table below, we need two sag wagons, and a Net Control.  Unfortunately, Gary Aden and his Venture Crew are not available this year.  Any help to fill the positions will be greatly appreciated.  A perfect Sag Wagon is any SUV with a bike rack.

Thanks & 73 de Gary

This is fun on-the-air activity.   Any ARRL appointees and life members may participate by adding /140 to your call.   So get on the air and call CQ!   Mine would be "N2RHV/140".  Repeater contacts are valid for credit too!  Get on Echolink and other linked repeaters!  Be considerate on repeaters and don't hog the line!

See the rules below.

Hello, Section Managers.

The Hiram Percy Maxim Birthday Celebration will begin on September 2 and continue through September 9.   You have likely seen the ARRL Web page announcement  (http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/08/17/11025/?nc=1) and/or the article in September QST, page 20.

This on-the-air operating event may be especially interesting to you and all Field Organization appointees because you (and they) are eligible to add “ /140” to your call sign (and their call signs) during this period of time.    All participating radio amateurs will be trying to contact stations that sign “/140,” and all stations signing “/140” are invited contact one another, too.   Who knows… you might even become the center of attention in an on-the-air pile up!

A copy of the operating event details are directly below.  All radio amateurs are invited to join the party.  Have a great time.

73,

Steve Ewald, WV1X

===================================================

http://www.arrl.org/news/stories/2009/08/17/11025/?nc=1

HPM/140 Birthday Celebration Event is September 2- 9.

The Hiram Percy Maxim Birthday celebration is back! This year, the ARRL is honoring the 140th anniversary of the birth of the League's first president and cofounder. Hiram Percy Maxim, W1AW, was born September 2, 1869 and died February 17, 1936, in a Colorado hospital of complications stemming from a throat infection; his widow died just nine days later.

The operating event is open to all amateurs, and the goal is straightforward: Find the stations adding /140 to their call signs, and contact as many as possible during the event period, September 2-9. Who is eligible to sign /140? ARRL members who hold ARRL appointments, ARRL elected volunteers (such as ARRL Directors and Section Managers), ARRL Life Members, ARRL Headquarters staff and VEs, AECs, QSL bureau workers and awards managers (who are ARRL members). The complete list of eligible positions can be found on page 20 of the September 2009 issue of QST. If you work at least 25 /140 stations, an attractive certificate can be yours! The certificate can be endorsed in increments of 25 QSOs, up to 100.

Time Period: 0000 UTC September 2 until 2400 UTC September 9.

Exchange: All stations signing /140 send RS(T), their appointment and their name; others send RS(T) and their name.

Eligibility: All amateur stations may participate. ARRL Life Members, and those persons holding ARRL appointments, elected positions or ARRL HQ staff, may add /140 to their call signs for the duration of the celebration. Volunteer Examiners, Assistant Emergency Coordinators, QSL Bureau workers, Registered Instructors and Awards Managers who are ARRL members are also invited to participate.

Miscellaneous: /140 stations may be contacted on any band or mode for credit. You can work a station once per band and mode. Repeater contacts are valid for credit, but please be considerate of the users during a repeater's busy periods. All /140 stations are encouraged to be as active as possible on local repeaters and nets. The certificate is available for making at least 25 contacts with /140 stations, with endorsement increments of 25, and a maximum endorsement of 100. To receive the award, send in a log extract with the date, time, band, call sign worked and exchange for each /140 contact. Include your name, call sign and address, and tell us how many /140 stations you worked. Mail everything to HPM/140 Celebration, c/o W1AW, 225 Main St , Newington , CT 06111-1494 . You can also send in your entry on a disk or CD in regular text format. All entries must be accompanied by a check or money order for $5 ( US ) payable to ARRL. Please make sure your entry is postmarked by October 9, 2009.

They take effect immediately.

Good Samaritans now have immunity from suit unless they act in a reckless or grossly negligent manner.

Disaster Service Workers are also protected under the legislation, provided they are activated by a competent authority and provided that they are acting within the scope of their duties.

I haven’t yet had time to do a full analysis, but this is very good news.

As many of you may already be aware, the ARRL is sold out of 2009 Field Day
pins. Apparently, although they ordered more than they ever have, they also
sold out faster than they ever have.

I am currently investigating getting an additional order of pins at the same $5
price through the ARRL. If they decide to do this we will need to order 100
pins.

If you did not get a 2009 Field Day pin and you would like one, please email
WO1NDR@.... I will put you on the list. I've already got 30 people who
want pins. I need 70 more.

Greetings,

This coming weekend is the California International AirShow. Don’t miss this year’s return of all the great acts, fireworks, wall of fire, demonstrations, and more.

As of this morning, we still need volunteers on all three days. If you have replied to my individual emails to you, thank you very much. If you haven’t had a chance to respond, please let me know if you would like to participate in this great event, or if you are unable to do so. Thank you to all who have already replied.

Whether you can volunteer or not, please let others know about the event and our communications center support. We can use non-licensed folks as well as hams. We already have hams scheduled throughout the event. It is a great opportunity to provide vital support, be at the center of the action, and learn about ham radio. I will have introductory materials, handouts, even powerpoints and videos for folks on their break periods. Some young folks are coming out with their parents to help out, learn about ham radio, and get started in their licensing process.

I will have healthy snacks there. The AirShow will provide us with the famous volunteer BBQ Friday, meals Saturday & Sunday, drinks, hats, and more. Our facility is excellent and we will also have a spotter/viewing station on top of the Terminal building.

Thank you for your consideration and support.

Please email me at rick@... to reply.

Have a great day es 73 de KN6FR

Professor Rick  ;-)

Brought back by popular demand, Tour de Peninsula is ON for 2009. This
really should be "Tour de Peninsula, a New Beginning" because there are now
four bike rides and a new start and finish at Coyote Point Park in San
Mateo. They expect some 1700 bike riders participating.

The four bike rides as follows: kid's 1-3 mile, 20 mile, 31 mike & 63 mile
rides. We will be working the three adult rides.

Run by Pilarcitos Cyclesports, all rides start & end starts in Coyote Point
Park in the upper parking lot next to the Captains House where event HQ &
Amateur Radio Net Control will be located.

This event offers an excellent opportunity for emergency you to provide

Since this event is still in the planning stages, most of the posts are not
yet determined but there will be four rest stops.

Message
Barry Bettman (K6ST), ham radio coordinator for the Alcatraz Challenge event, needs a few more hams to take part in radio communications this comming Sunday (7/12/09). The Alcatraz swim is probably one of the most thrilling events we do in ham radio. It takes place on San Francisco Bay and the San Francisco shoreline. It is fast and action-packed with lots of radio communications. We literally provide life-saving services at times in this event to bring quick help to those who need it among the hundreds of swimmers in the Bay. It's a beautiful setting and it's great radio! Once you do this event you never forget the experience.

If you want to participate please get in touch with Barry right away at K6ST@...

Greetings!

We still have (free) booth space available at Take Flight for Kids San Jose Reid Hillview Airport Saturday August 8, 9am-5pm. More than 100 exhibitors are already committed, and a total of 250 are expected at what should be the hottest aviation/science/accessible-events gig in the Bay Area.

Take Flight for Kids is a hugely popular flying festival series at Northern California airports.  We recruit up to 100 volunteer pilots of small airplanes and helicopters, and provide free flights for about 750-1000 young people with disabilities, at risk youth, homeless kids, foster kids, etc.  Most of the kids get to take controls of the plane during their 30 minute flights, to experience the empowerment of being in absolute control of a complex flying machine.

We host simultaneous huge festivals at the airports, with 4000-5000 attendees expected to enjoy a big day of hands on fun.  The emphasis is on hands accessible activities & STEM science/tech/engineering/math, with a kids-fly-free component added.  Since the event is absolutely free, we expect big crowds to join us, making this the biggest aviation-based STEM science/technology/engineering/math festival in the Bay Area.

Yup, everything is FREE to all attendees, all volunteers, and all nonprofits/vendors get FREE BOOTH SPACE!  Free admission, free parking, free BBQ at noon, free airplane rides to kids 8-17 years old (must be pre-registered online), free live entertainment, petting zoos, hot air balloon rides, helicopters, radio controlled aircraft, model rockets, science experiments, games, rides, fun, fun, FUN!

To reserve a (free) booth in this hottest gig in town, all you have to do is RSVP online.  We'll take care of the rest:  http://www.takeflightforkids.com/vendor.htm

For more info, check the website: http://www.takeflightforkids.com

Do me a favor and spread the word about free booth space.  Lots of spam filters automatically delete my emails, so if a colleague in another group might like to host a (free) booth, please forward this email and invite them to join us.  The more the merrier!

I hope you can join us on August 8!

Cheers
Dean McCully
Take Flight for Kids, etc

PS If you have already signed up, please scroll down and verify your organization's name appears correctly.   If you were signed up last year but not this year, you must register again to verify that you are attending again.  If you join us, you will be in good company.  Here's the partial list of exhibitors, with more signing on every day:
