Hello. I am sure others will weigh in with more, and most likely better, info.,
but here goes. I think you can do what you are thinking, but there are some
considerations.
I would put some sand below the vapor barrier to help protect it from movement.
I would favor bricks over tiles, the latter being too thin and giving less
stability over sand.
If you put bricks over sand and you have a spill, what keeps the liquid from
saturating the sand below and beginning to stink later? You might be able to
set the bricks in such a way that you could grout them or sweep a sand/cement
mix into the cracks to reduce seepage.
Best wishes, David Gray

Hi y'all:
I will be building a small strawbale home in northern new mexico with a rubble
trench foundation and a perimeter concrete "grade beam". I am interested in
alternatives to a concrete slab. I am thinking of brick or saltillo tiles over
sand over rigid insulation over vapor barrier, but am interested in any
recommendations. I considered an earth floor, but we have dogs. Would like
thermal mass without alot of concrete. Any suggestions are appreciated.
Thanks!
