Okay, some are into Borges, some are into choosing a country, some
want something they have never read before. What do we do? Someone
decide what we are going to read or should and then we can start
having some serious discussions.
Personally, I don't like Borges. He's pretentious and boring. How
about Galleano or Marquez or choosing a country and we decide to read
an author that we can all talk a

What about Cortazar? I really liked his stories about "cronopios y famas" (I
wander how was that translated into English). And they are short so we could
reread them and start discussing very soon.

Hi! My name is Mario, I am a grad student at the University of
Toronto
(latinamerican lit.) and would be really interested in a group
reading.
Personally I would nominate short stories by Borges (my favourite).
Anything from Ficciones to El libro de arena or any other collection
of
short stories would be great. This is my presonal suggestion but Im
open to
other readings...

PS: I am sorry but Im not sure of the titles in English, they should
be
something like Fictions and The Book of Sand.

I must echo everyone else and say my knowledge is limited. I would like to
read something new as well. I've read most of Allende, although not
Daughter of Fortune. And to make things difficult I've already read Love In
The Time Of Cholera.
I like the idea of picking a country. If we pick a country we can then all
propose a few candidates to vote on.
Or whatever!?
I just want to read what everyone else does and then discuss it.

HOLA AMIGOS ! I logged onto the email for the first time in a week and was
pleasantly surprised to find some messages from the South American literature
group. Cool!
Yes, a group read would be interesting, hoping we can all agree on a title. My
job consumes my life so reading time is very valuable to me. If I don't like the
material, I toss it.
I am currently reading Jorge Amado's SHOW DOWN. So far, it's good. It has been
a long time since I read Amado. Fifteen years ago as a university student, I
loved his books. I read TENT OF MIRACLES and DONA FLOR & HER TWO HUSBANDS for a
course called "Culture of the Oppressed". I found the stories very lively and
touching. I laughed out loud at some of the bawdy antics of the characters but
I was also moved to tears for the injustice they experienced.
I will keep you posted about my impressions of SHOW DOWN. It is like getting
acquainted with an old friend again.
If anyone wants to make group read suggestions, I will cast my vote. Let's
breath some life into this group!!
Hasta la proxima post,
Mark

I just wanted to take a second to introduce myself since I'm new
to the list. I am a thirty year old student and live in PA. I am
enrolled in a class on contemporary Latin American literature by
women and although I have read LatAm lit before, I never went into
any kind of literary/academic depth (I just read it for pleasure as
I am a bibliophile).
Anyway I've just read Castellanos, Bombal, Lispector and of course
Allende for this wonderful course. Before this course I read LatAm
authors such as Garcia-Marquez, Zoe Valdes and Esquivel (Like Water
for Chocolate, which I didn't really like all that much-how about
you?), etc.
Looking forward to discussing these authors and finding out about new
ones from you.
Yours,
Aleida
Hi, my name is Mark, I am 37, I live in Toronto, Ontario, Canada, and I am
interested in participating in this discussion group. I am a big fan of South
American literature and writers and hope to learn more about this culture.
The last South American book I read was Gabriel Garcia Marquez's NEWS OF THE
KIDNAPPING. It was very different from his other books but I found it
interesting insight to Colombia. I will endeavor to read more Latin Lit as I
participate in this group.

I have no idea why OneList cut my last email in half! But here's the
second Fuentes lecture:
The second will be given in tandem with Umberto Eco, and is billed as
a "Celebration of Italo Calvino." That takes place on Friday, Oct 22,
and details may be found at:
http://www.libyrinth.com/eco/eco_features.html
Carlos Fuentes will be in New York City next week, delivering two
lectures. The first will be on Oct. 18, Monday night, and its topic
is the Borges Centennial. Details are at:

Hello,
Allow me to introduce myself. My name is Allen Ruch, though online I
prefer to go by my nickname, the Quail.
I am editor of the Libyrinth, a Web site dedicated to exploring
postmodern literature. The Libyrinth is host to a pair of sites of
possible interest to this group -- Macondo, a Gabriel Garcia Marquez
site, and the Garden of Forking Paths, a site for Borges. In the
future, we also plan to develop sites for Fuentes, Cortazar,
Saramago, and maybe Llosa.
I thought I would join this list as both a SA Lit enthusiast, and
also to alert its members that Macondo has just initiated a new
Garcia Marquez mailing list. I invite you to check out:

Where you can find the URL to sign up for the Macondo Post mailing list.
Thanks, and I look forward to the discussions on this List!

Also, MC Solaar has name-dropped Umberto Eco, Jacques Lacan, and other

I just wish more bands would sing about Gabriel Garcia-Marquez.

Hi my name is Tanya and I live in Greenville, SC. I am 17 years old an I go to
the Fine Arts Center for creeative writing.
I recently got into Allende, and I want to know if Eva Luna is set in Chile.
I love the book so far. I am doing my second semester report on her. I think
she is amazing. I have noticed that south american women writers weave
mysticism, magic, life and other things into their poems/stories that many
Americans leave out.
I am just getting into Neruda, and I have liked Lorca for a while. I got
turned onto him bc he was in a Ginsberg poem and a Clash song.
I hope to learn a lot, discuss a lot, and get reccomendations.
If any of you would like to reccomend fiction writers- PLEASE do. Or poets,
certain anthologies etc etc
It's nice to say hello!

Hi. My name is Jennifer.. I am new to the list. I am wondering if
anyone knows of any authors who write about South American History
(ealier the date the better) in a ficitonal manner. I am very
interested in South American History.. But not too into history books.
I like it to feel like I am reading a very good novel.
One of my fav. authors is Garcia Marquez. I also enjoy Allende. But
I was hoping to find some less popular authors.. I don't mind having
to search for something.. if it promises to be good. :)
I am very interested in something factual about Simon Bolivar. If
anyone has any leads.. please let me know.. via the newsletter or my
personal email..
Eyes_of_a_Blue_Dog@... or W0manChild@...
(The "0" in W0man is a zero.. ) Thank you Jennifer
