Work on our new Hawthorne Branch Library is on schedule -- and slated to be
done by LATE JUNE.
First walk-throughs for Hawthorne staff were Thursday (04.13). 'The first
thing you notice, when you walk in,' they said, is 'SPACE. Space to sit,
space to settle in.'
The new Hawthorne will be TWICE AS BIG as now -- (and that's not counting a
brand new community meeting room).
Our neighborhood library now is a long, narrow space - set between Family
Dollar and Rent-A-Center - in the shopping center along East Wash.
This summer it will be moving down to the other end of the shopping center
(the Burger King end), into the two-storey space which used to be Aldi's.
The Library will be on the ground floor -- and Madison Health Dept. public
health clinic will be on the second floor.
Actual moving dates haven't been set yet -- depends on when furnishings,
computers are delivered and installed.
The new Hawthorne will have more books and videos; more computer stations;
a conference room volunteer literacy tutors and their students can use; and
a community meeting room. When not scheduled for meetings or storytime,
the new community meeting room can double as a quiet reading space.
