Hi....dave: You make a good point for sure. I assumed (in error it would
appear) that a kit would be satisfactory for a Modernista who seriously wanted
something new and modern. Apparently, I was wrong with that assumption.
> Correct me if I'm wrong but I seem to recall a moderately prominent S scaler
occasionally publicly begging for folks to assemble his stash of kits for him?
I would characterize my efforts a bit differently. Let's say I offered swapping
opportunities to those who wanted some no-longer-produced scarce item in
exchange for building some kits. They got something unavailable in the open
market and rather rare. I got some kits assembled. A fair and mutually
agreeable swap for both parties. Not at all like a beggar on the street corner
looking for a handout. By the way, my unbuilt kit stash is now down to four
kits.
> Someone made a good point about building modern cars for the flyer crowd and
letting them provide the volume necessary for production,
I agree that Flyer-crowd involvement is a good strategy if RTR is the only thing
you will consider. If, however, you wanted a particular modern model and
wanted it in the next year or two, then a custom kit is much more likely to
actually produce results. Waiting around for someone else to make what you want
RTR might take a v--e--r--y long time. I did assume that building a kit was
preferable to waiting ten or more years for something strongly desired. My
error.....sorry.
I guess both approaches are valid -- RTR for those who do not like to build kits
and custom manufacturer for those who view kits as an enjoyable pastime and want
to get on with it instead of waiting......and waiting......and......
