To all of you that feel the call to explore the endless potential of
love, journey now with love's greatest student – and master – the 13th
century mystic poet of Persia : Jelaluddin Rumi. Rumi's incredible,
profound verses invite us to experience a love beyond our senses,
beyond time, beyond language: a love that removes all boundaries and
answers all desire.
Sina Yasavolian recites selections of Nader Khalili's translations in
a graceful, lyrical dance to an original musical score by Hamoon
Tehrani . His music awakens our hearts as Sina's soothing voice and
Rumi's sensitive words transport our spirits to a place of union with
the infinite divine presence. In her readings, Sina exhibits a deep
respect and understanding of Rumi's writing, which she generously
shares with us. Do more than listen to this poetry and music; let it
color your soul. You can buy and download these music, directly from
this site. hope you enjoy it.

An evening of Greek Music & Poetry
"Once long ago I loved you, Atthis": An Evening with Sappho.
"Once long ago I loved you, Atthis,
A little graceless child you seemed to me"
Sappho
An evening with Music and Poetry of Sappho
We are going to read Sappho in Greek, English and perhaps in other
languages. Please bring your favourite poems and stories to share,
poems inspired by Sappho.
To Atthis
Though in Sardis now,
she things of us constantly
and of the life we shared.
She saw you as a goddess
and above all your dancing gave her deep joy.
Now she shines among Lydian women like
the rose-fingered moon
rising after sundown, erasing all
stars around her, and pouring light equally
across the salt sea
and over densely flowered fields
lucent under dew. Her light spreads
on roses and tender thyme
and the blooming honey-lotus.
Often while she wanders she remem-
bers you, gentle Atthis,
and desire eats away at her heart
for us to come.

Aissaoua music is used in rituals of spritual healing held for many reasons, including marriages, circumcisions, and to treat medical and psychological conditions. The Aissaoua spiritual brotherhood was formed for Sidi Ben Aissa (d.1546), whose tomb is located in Meknes. Followers usually consider themselves to be Muslim but their ceremonies reveal pre-Islamic traditions. Trance states are induced to channel healing power from baraka (magical forces) flowing through the universe. There are many important aspects to the ceremony like chanting, dancing and incense. Aissaoua music is related to other regional styles such as Jillella, Gnowa, Hamadcha, Toktooka Jebellia.
The instruments include a variety of percussion: Tabl (double-headed drums), Bendir (frame drums often with cymbals), Tarija (small goblet drums), Tibla (kettledrums) and Tasa (metal dish). The percussion is enhanced by rhythmic clapping, singing, ghyyta (double-reeded horn) and nefar (long trumpet). Abdeljalil Aouame is mqaddem (master) of an Aissaoua troupe in Meknes, Morocco. He belongs to the Artistic Association of Aissaoua and has performed internationally.
Quentin Shaw
trained first as an artist, specializing later in metal fabrication and blacksmithing. His musical studies have included top players of Tunisian darbooka, Pakistani tabla, Moroccan tabl, tibla and frame drum. He is also a teacher and performer. Quentin currently hammer-raises most of his drums from sheets of recycled steel. Natural skins, available tuneable or fixed.
Heather McQueen trained at the Art Institute of Chicago after studying dance, piano and flute. Ceramics has long been her interest; she has been making drums since 2000. She picked up her knowledge of percussion from lessons in Morocco and from playing with colleagues and friends, including Quentin. Heather's goblet and kettle drums come with natural skins of cow, goat or fish.
In this month's meeting we have Raficq Abdulla MBE, poet and writer sharing his experiences. Raficq has published "The Conference of the Birds" by Farid Ud-Din Attar and Raficq Abdulla and Rumi Words of Paradise: Selected Poems by Rumi - New Interpretations by Raficq Abdulla. Both books are published by Frances Lincoln.
Raficq Abdulla - From "Things that Unfold to Delight". "It dawned on me that there wasn't a single History. There wasn't a single answer to anything. Every event was someone's story. I was taught the English version of Waterloo, but there was also a French version, the officer's version, the foot-soldier's version. So there could be no certainty."
"Suddenly we're aware of the utter contingency of our lives. The music stops and there's silence. Deus Absconditus. But at the end of the day it's the truth. You don't know, I don't know. We have to live with that not-knowing."
The group is open to everyone, please come along, bring a friend. Please ask at the reception in the library for the Reading Group.

Rumi: The Nuptial Night: Interfaith Concert
The soul which cannot endure fire and smoke won't find the Secret. -

At the death of the great Sufi poet and sage Mevlana Jalaluddin RUMI,
Muslims, Jews, and Christians all joined the funeral.
This date on 17th December is traditionally celebrated as Mevlana
Rumi's 'nuptial night' when he finally joined in union with the Beloved.
We invite you to an interfaith concert of Mevlevi music, plaintive
Yiddish songs, and Christian spirituals, with readings from Rumi's
poetry in English and Persian.
The day I've died, my pall is moving on -
But do not think my heart is still on earth!
Don't weep and pity me: "Oh woe, how awful!"
You fall in devil's snare - woe, that is awful!
Don't cry "Woe, parted!" at my burial -
For me this is the time of joyful meeting!
Don't say "Farewell!" when I'm put in the grave -
A curtin is it for eternal bliss.
You saw "descending" - now look at the rising!
Is setting dangerous for sun and moon?
To you it looks like setting, but it's rising;
The coffin seems a jail, yet it means freedom.
Which seed fell in the earth that did not grow there?
Why do you doubt the fate of human seed?
What bucket came not filled from out the cistern?
Why should the Yusaf "Soul" then fear this well?
Close here your mouth and open it on that side.
So that your hymns may sound in Where-no-place!

Beginner/Improver Darbukha Masterclass with Hossam Ramzy
Egypt's Ambassador of Rhytm & the World's Leading Name in Egyptian Dance Music
Sun 20 Aug - 12 - 6pm - St Marks Church, Myddelton Square
Hossam Ramzy was born in Cairo, Egypt. His musical career began early,
when at the age of three he was given his first drum, an Egyptian Tabla.....
Hossam's passion and huge talent for percussion was noted by his family, many of whom were themselves involved in the arts. Hossam was
encouraged to master his craft and studied under leading Cairo music teachers.
A move to Saudi Arabia led him to joining with many Bedouin tribes which gave the young Hossam a rich insight into the cultural origins
of Middle Eastern music and became the inspiration for many of his later rhythmic directions. In the mid 1970's Hossam came to England, and enjoyed great success as a Jazz drummer working with many respected Jazz musicians like Andy Sheperd and Geoff Williams. But as
he began looking for new dimensions of percussive sounds, he found himself turning full circle back to his first love, the Egyptian Drums, and the thrilling dance rhythms of the Middle East. Hossam then encorporated all his rhythmic experience into creating a new sound
that is heard on hundreds of the world leading albums recorded today.
The club dance scene of 2001 was taken by a storm with Hossam's No# 1 hit EDONY that has topped the dance charts worldwide. The distinctive sound of his Arabian & North African string
arrangements, his percussion and exciting rhythms on his albums caught the imagination of Peter Gabriel and Hossam was invited to perform on PASSION and later US, and has just completed the working on Peter's
new unreleased album. Hossam has gone on to work with many top musicians including Joan Armatrading & Mary Wilson.
Hossam is known world wide for creating string arrangements and percussion and produced many songs for the world's leading artists
such as: Yesim Salkim, Celick Erici, Cheb Khaled, Tarkan, Rachid Taha, Faudel, The Gypsy Kings and the list just goes on.
In 1994 Robert Plant and Jimmy Page (ex-Led Zeppelin) invited Hossam to bring together a band of Arabian musicians and work on their
reunion album 'No Quarter - Unledded' for which he was rewarded a GOLD thena PLATINUM discs. This led to Hossam joining Page & Plant on their historic reunion 1995/96 world tour.
In November 2001 at the 25th Anniversary of the ARC Music record company, with whom Hossam has released 18 Albums in his own name for
the Egyptian dance, he was awarded a PLATINUM disc for being their top selling artist, over 200.000 record sales.
Hossam built his own state of the art recording environment DRUMZY STUDIO, in which he has the latest in recording technolgy mixed in
with old;and unique sounds of the best names in recording equipment. With all this available to his finger tips, he can now create many new sounds of the old traditional grooves and Arabian & North African
Samples & Loops of which he has no less than 80.000, all in perfect BPM, and ready to use. To date Hossam has recorded and released 4 top selling albums in Drumzy Studio. There is more on Hossam Ramzy at

Sufi Music Festival London July 28-31 2006
Where Everything Is Music
Don't worry about saving these songs!
And if one of our instruments breaks, it doesn't matter
We have falled into the place where everything is music.
The strumming and the flute notes rise into the atmosphere,
And even if the whole world's harp should burn up,
There will still be hidden instruments playing.*
This year's Sufi Music Festival in London aims to offer a small taste
of the passion that Rumi talks about. Caravansary presents a weekend
of workshops including Sufi meditation, performances by
internationally known artists, Sufi music and musicians. The Festival
launch on Friday evening is with Nihavend Ensemble performing
classical Turkish Sufi Music. This is followed by Sufi Music workshops
on Saturday including Ney and Frame Drum. In the evening, we have a
concert with Rumi's poetry and music, which will sooth hearts and
minds. On Sunday we have further Sufi Music workshops and events,
culminating with a performance of Persian Sufi Music. The Festival

Workshop: In this day-long workshop, we'll examine and practice the
ancient Sufi poetry and music of Turkey. Starting in central Asia,
Turks developed a unique blend of shamanistic, islamic and somewhat
heterodoxical mysticsm. In this workshop, we'll work on the music
theory, musical styles, ryhtmic patterns, Sufi poetry and other
mystical arts of the Turkish people. Some of the workshops will be
hands on practices of the music. So bring your guitars, violins or
any instruments you have along with any size or shapes of drums to
discover the complicated and very entertaining Turkish beats. Here
are some of the related lectures and workshops in this full day of
Turkish cultural offering:
a) Turkish History from Central Asia to Anatolia: 1000 years of
Journey
b) Turkish Religions from Shamanism to Islam
c) Turkish Sufi Mysticsm since Islam
d) Turkish Music theory: Makams, musical forms and Turkish Rhythms
e) Mystic poetry of Turkish Dervishes
One of the most well-known Turkish musicians in the U.S., Latif Bolat
plays Turkish Folk Music and devotional Sufi songs, called Ilahi and
Nefes, from the Anatolian peninsula. Accompanying himself on baglama
(Turkish long-necked lute), Latif sings of love and spirit, with many
songs featuring the lyrics of the great 13th century mystical poets
Rumi and Yunus Emre.
Latif Bolat, one of the most renowned Turkish musicians in North
America , is a native of the Turkish Mediterranean town of Mersin.
After receiving his degree in folklore and music at Gazi University
in Ankara, Turkey, he taught traditional music throughout the
country. He then went on to manage Ankara Halk Tiyatrosu, a musical
theater company, which performed traditional musical plays. Mr. Bolat
also received additional degrees in Turkish History and Middle East
Religion and Politics from Ankara University and an MBA from San
Francisco State University.
Now residing in the USA, Mr. Bolat is one of the most distinguished
Turkish musicians in this country. He has presented concerts and
lectures at colleges, universities, performing arts institutions and
festivals across the US, Canada, England, Australia, New Zealand,
Bulgaria, Philippines, Scotland, Singapore, Indonesia and Turkey.
With a vast repertory that includes songs in classical, folk and Sufi
mystic music styles, he accompanies his singing on the baglama (long-
necked lute), and various other traditional instruments from the
Turkish folk music tradition.
Specializing in the ancient Turkish mystic-devotional music genre,
Latif Bolat has been received with appreciation and enthusiasm
throughout the world, as he provides a unique philosophy and approach
to the performance of traditional music. By creating an intimate,
almost "storytelling" atmosphere, he explains Turkish folk and mystic
music and its sociopolitical and cultural elements. The performance
both entertains and invites the audience to ponder questions such as
how major sociopolitical factors influence culture and the art it
produces.
In his lectures, he tries to tie together the related disciplines of
Turkish and Ottoman history, politics, and religion from within the
framework of Turkish culture and music.
Mr.Bolat performs as a singer and accompanies himself on the
traditional Turkish stringed instrument "baglama." Other traditional
acoustic Turkish instruments which frequently accompany him include
frame drum, ney flute, kanun, violin and oud. As an important part of
the presentation, Turkish devotional poetry from the 13th century
mystics Rumi and Yunus Emre as well as later Turkish mystic poets are
also sprinkled throughout the program. In addition to spoken
elaboration, slides are used to create a complete experience by
providing scenes of the Turkish countryside, cities, artwork,
architecture, and people. This provides a deeper understanding of the
culture by combining the musical presentation with images of its
origin.
