Description
The Leicestershire village of Rothley is well known for its history, with a number of very old houses. It is famous for its Saxon Cross in the churchyard, its Knights Temple in the grounds of Rothley Court Hotel. Rothley Court, where Thomas Babington lived when it was a private house. Thomas Babington from Rothley Temple worked closely with William Wilberforce developing the detailed resolutions that led to the Bill for the Abolition of the Slave Trade, enacted in 1807. The ROTHLEY HISTORY SOCIETY meets from 7.15 p.m. on the third Wednesday of most months(with the exception of July and August) in the Rothley Centre, Mountsorrel Lane. We have a very varied list of speakers for 2009 and 2010, and feel sure that there is something that will appeal to you. Everyone, of any age, is very welcome to come along to our meetings. A visitor charge is £2.50 per meeting, and when you decide to join as a full members, it is £2.00. per meeting, and the year's subscription is £5.00.
On March 18th we have Roger Bradley with his talk about Photography. We have an outing on April 8th to the National Media Museum in Bradford. Then on the 15th our speaker is Fred Hartley telling us about Long Case Clocks. On June 4th we have an outing to Bletchley Park and later that month on the 17th Fiona Ure whose subject is The Loughborough Ladybirds Books, Peter Liddle is our speaker for September 16th - the subject being The Stonton Wyville Project. In October we have an outing on the 13th to The British Horological Society, and on the 21st Gareth King when we learn about the History of Witchcraft. On December 16th we shall be entertained by Mal Trott with his Hand and String Puppets.
