Basic Strategies for Behaving More Assertively
Do you have trouble expressing your feelings and opinions to others?
Learn to stand up for yourself! Assertion training can help you express
yourself in a manner that neither sells yourself short not threatens
others. Apply assertiveness strategies to learning how to stand up for
your rights, making and refusing requests, giving and receiving
compliments and expressing anger constructively.
Assertiveness training is available from CAPS through individual or
workshop sessions. Call us at 966-3658.

Basic Strategies for Behaving More Assertively
Identify your personal rights, wants, and needs.

Identify how you FEEL about a particular situation, (e.g., "I feel
angry", "I feel embarrassed", "I like you".) In identifying your
feelings about the situation, use sensory descriptions that help to
capture how you feel, (e.g., "I feel stepped on", "I feel like I'm on
cloud nine".) Report what kind of action the feeling urges you to do,
(e.g., "I feel like hugging you".)
In describing your feelings, use "I" messages; own your message. Use
these "I" statements to epees your feelings instead of evaluating or
blaming others, (e.g., "I feel hurt" vs. "You hurt me" or "You are
inconsiderate".)
Connect your feeling statement with some specific behavior in the other
person, (e.g., "I felt hurt when you left without saying goodbye" vs.
"I felt hurt because you were inconsiderate".)
Be direct -- deliver your message to the person for whom it was
intended. Express your request in one or two easy to understand
sentences.
Try not to make assumptions about what the other person is thinking or
feeling, about what their motives are, or about how they may react.
Check things out with them first.
Avoid sarcasm, character assassination, or absolutes (e.g., using words
like, "you never...", "you always...", "you constantly...", etc.).
Avoid labeling.
Avoid statements beginning with "Why?", "You...". This may put the
other person on the defensive.
Ask for feedback: "Am I being clear?", "How do you see this
situation?". Asking for feedback helps correct any misperceptions you
may have, as well as helping others realize that you are open to
communication, and are expressing an opinion, feeling, or desire,
rather than a demand.
Evaluate your expectations. Are they reasonable? Be willing to
compromise.

MASTERING THE ART OF COMMUNICATION
Communication is the beginning point of all agreement. It is the
"glue" of teamwork and the bridge of human relationship.

Whether you are in a committed relationship, leading a management
team, running a business, parenting children, or negotiating a deal,
your ability to understand, to BE understood and to create harmony,
depends on your ability to master some of the basic laws of
communication.
*****************************************

KNOW YOUR PERSONAL POWER TO INFLUENCE

Communication itself is your true personal power.

Our world is nothing but a mass of earth, air and chemicals - if it
were not for human exchange and communication.

All of our present day ideas, products, rules and rituals have been
created through cooperation and relationship and that stems first
from our communication.

Someone, somewhere, beginning a thought and COMMUNICATING it
with another, CREATES our world. So, to be your most
powerful communicator that you are, know and BELIEVE that your
communication itself is POWER. (and respect the "power" of others
to create this way also)

If you want to change ANYTHING in your life, to have more money,
to have a great relationship, or to effect positive change around you,
your COMMUNICATION can CREATE it. It can bring things into EXISTENCE.

Mastering the sending and receiving (the exchange) elements of
Communication lets you influence your world where no obstacle can ever
block you from what you desire.
***********

LISTEN ... and RECEIVE

Most people's greatest desire is simply...to be heard, to be
understood, and to be accepted.

Communication is a relay game. Too often, communication blocks
happen when BOTH parties maintain a position that each needs to be
heard FIRST. When you let go of that, the other person feels an
instant increase in trust with you. By listening first before you
talk, you are RECEIVING the communication they are sending and that
"empties their cup" so that they can hear YOU.

This does not mean to simply "let them finish". Rather, it means
to clearly UNDERSTAND the other's position. Ask questions of them,
acknowledge what is being said to you (don't comment on it but
reflect it and acknowledge it) and show them you are getting their
point.

Remember that communication only happens when it is RECEIVED. Do
what you need to do to receive it clearly and fully and you will
open up the channel to even more productive exchange.
**************

ACKNOWLEDGE COMMUNICATION

Receiving communication also means "signaling" that you received
it as well.

Communication... is a response! (if you speak in an empty forest
and no one hears you it is NOT communication is it?).

So, ACKNOWLEDGE what is being said to you before you respond to it
(with your opinion or counter opinion). This can be as simple as
nodding your head, uttering "yes", "uh huh" or "I can see what you
mean" as the other person makes a point of what they are saying.
(Mastering this one skill can make you a master of online chats as
well! People rarely acknowledge communication in an online chat)

This is also PARTICULARLY TRUE when people are upset. Especially
when dealing with an irate customer. Think about the last time you
received poor treatment in customer service and all you wanted was
someone to listen to your issues. If the irate person is your
customer, hear them out and ACKNOWLEDGE them before you defend your
company's position - or even before you try to right the wrong.

Since there is no greater desire than the desire to be heard (and it
is rare that people take the time to really acknowledge what we think),
when you do that for others you will gain immediate and tangible
results
in the form of trust and respect.
**************

CLARIFY AND CONFIRM YOUR COMMUNICATION

In the same thinking, whenever you complete a significant business
meeting or whenever you resolve an upset in a personal
relationship, be proactive about CONFIRMING whether your
communication was RECEIVED.

Don't assume just because you said it (or...that you SENT it) that
it was understood. ASK the other person if you can review what you
both covered in the communication before you leave it.

Example: "Okay, just so I understand this, we are going to resolve
this (situation) this way, is that right? or..is it that way ?"

Example: "So, you're going to pick up the kids at 5:00 and I am going
to do the dinner. Is that right?" ( No one can say you didn't say what
you did if you take the time to confirm like this)

Sure, most times you can speak in shorthand with people you know very
Well and you might not find this necessary. But, if you are finding
that there are missed signals, and misunderstandings happening, it
is usually because both parties are not clarifying their communication
beforehand.

You will be surprised when you do this how often what we ASSUME
people understand is so very far from what they DO understand.
Asking to review the communication will prevent upsets in the
future as you both clarify what is needed.
**************

IDENTIFY and CONFRONT YOUR ASSUMPTIONS/BELIEFS

Too often today, in this "enlightened" "politically correct" world
we live in, we think it is "bad" to judge or to make assumptions
about people, their actions or intentions. But, assumptions are an
important part of our daily real-world interactions.

Without them, we would never get through the simplest tasks of team
work and cooperation. Interpretation is a normal part of communication.

The problems with judgements and beliefs comes when we don't recognize
them as...just that, beliefs and interpretations. When we try to
present
them as facts to ourselves or others, we cloud communication.

Let's take a simple example. Let's say that you send someone an email
asking a question. Let's also assume that they don't answer it promptly
and you notice they have seemed to avoid you in other respects as well.

It would not be out of the ordinary for you to wonder about that. Now,
you could assume, say, that the person is...shy...or that they
are...insensitive...or that they, perhaps, just don't take a shine to
you for some reason. Why knows? All assumptions are equal here.

But if you need to have prompt communication with this person, it needs
to be resolved, right? So, confront this by openly expressing your
suspicions and ASKING the person if there is such a problem.

Now, often a person asked is there a problem will respond "No, there
is no problem." It is as automatic as "How are you?" "I am fine",
etc. If they do answer that way, simply say (following this example),
"Well, I have noticed you haven't been able to answer my communication
and that it has happened like this before and I was even thinking ...
(SHARE with them whatever you assume) ...am I correct?"

This gives them a chance to acknowledge you, the situation, and what
is really going on for them. Obviously this is a small and trite
example but the principle holds for any kind of assumption belief.
It is part of communication and all communication needs to be
acknowledged.
**************

KNOW and PRACTICE THE 3 CENTRAL SKILLS OF RAPPORT BUILDING

Interview - asking questions with interest

Acknowledge - recognition & confirmation of communication you
receive

Sharing - creating common ground through revealing your own
background/story

The 3 central skills are essential for online chatting as well as face
to face conversation!

**************

LEARN TO CONFRONT in order to AVOID CONFRONTATIONS

When there is a problem, con-front it.

Look up that word in the dictionary and it will show you a very
different meaning than most of us assume. When faced with an issue
to resolve with someone else, if we don't like confrontations we say,
"I don't want a confrontation", etc.

However, if you look at the word confront, it means to FACE something.
(con-front to be in "front of") When we confront a situation, we
actually DIFFUSE it through communication.

NOT confronting it actually CAUSES CONFRONTATIONS. They happen because
when the issues are real, the "facing of it" is inevitable.

Unfortunately when it happens at a stress/breaking point and people
lose control, we get a "confrontation and the situation gets much worse.

Confront true issues openly and quickly to avoid confrontation.

Viruses: The Threat is Real
It is not overstating the case to say that viruses could interrupt the
free flow of information that has been built up by the personal
computing in the last 10 years. Indeed, the prevalence of viruses has
ushered in a new era of unsafe computing to the point where those that
ignore the guidelines run grave risks. Considering the extreme warnings
of danger—and the incidents already on record—it is a mystery that
there are those in the computing industry who claim news reports of
viruses are exaggerated.
The National Center for Computer Crime Data in Los Angeles estimates
that American business have lost as much as $550 million from
unauthorized access to computers yearly. The amount of lost time may be
incalculable.
As an indication of the severity of the problem, the federal government
has helped to form a virus SWAT team called the Computer Emergency
Response Team. Its job is to investigate security threats in major
computer networks across the country. The Software Publishers
Association has also adopted certain measures to address the problem.
Furthermore, in the last year many Fortune-listed companies have begun
to establish computer policies to deal with viruses. In many cases
those new procedures will set practices for testing in all software
before it is put on a network and restrict the downloading of software
from electronic bulletin boards. Literally no one who uses
computers—not the government nor the police nor even your local bank—is
immune from computer viruses.
Suppose a space shuttle executed an order from a virus-infected
software program. Or an air traffic controller was given incorrect
information from a fouled system. Or your company's financial records
were suddenly eradicated or permanently altered.
These are not necessarily fantasies of impending doom. Thus far,
computer viruses have hit a variety of systems, including Fortune 500
companies, government agencies, major universities, newspapers and
large networks linking vast numbers of computers and huge volumes of
information.

The "Unmeasurable" Fear
John Koskinen, chairman of the President's Council on the Year 2000
Conversion, must be a little bewildered. According to a poll conducted
by USA Today and Gallop polling, his campaign of calm over the Year
2000 computer problem has been so successful that USA Today reported
Koskinen is "growing concerned" that for the first time that people are
too complacent. It's strange days when you fret over doing a better job
than you intended.
But it's a very odd combination of stories about Y2K and the most
recent national polling data that appeared in the Thursday, 9/9/99
edition of USA Today. Essentially placed as a teaser on the front page
above the fold, the first story "Poll Shows Fear of Y2K Disasters
Fading," says that a survey of 1,014 adults conducted in late August
shows a distinguishable drop in concern on Y2K fallout from a similar
poll taken in December of 1998. FULL STORY

Shootings in schools have alarmed parents, teachers,
students, community leaders, administrators, and law
enforcement officials. As you begin the new school
year, the issues of violence and the presence of
weapons in schools will no doubt surface. School
officials will have to contend with the usual back
to school reports in the news media, many of which
will focus on school safety.

The Power in Praising People

One of the keys to success is to have successful
relationships.
We are not islands and we don't get to the top by
ourselves.
And one of the key ways to grow successful in our
relationships is to be "life-giving" people to
others. Every
person we meet, we either give life to or take
life from. There
are people who encourage you and when you are done
being
with them you feel built up. Then there are others
who you
feel torn down by. Successful people are people
who have
mastered the art of building others up.

One of the ways we build people up is to praise
them. There
is power in praising people! Something begins to
happen in
them, in you, and in your relationship when you
praise
someone. Remember a time when someone told you
something
about yourself in a praising manner? It was great,
wasn't it?
You probably liked that person more after they
praised you,
didn't you? Now I am not talking about praising
people for the
sake of praising people. I am talking about
honestly looking
for and praising positive character traits and
action of others
around you. Don't lie to people. If they have done
something
wrong, correct it, but when they do something
right, Praise it!

Here are the benefits of and ways to start
praising people.

Benefits

Your relationship grows. Life is about
relationships. Family
relationships, friends, and co-workers. When we
begin to
praise people for their positive aspects, our
relationships grow.
It puts them, and us, on the fast track. Your
leadership and
influence grows. Who is going to have greater
leadership and
influence capacity in the lives of their
followers, the one who
tears down or the one who builds up?

Stronger relationships and loyalty. When a person
is
appreciated and praised, they become fiercely
loyal, because
they know that you care for them, love them, and
appreciate
them. This will take you to success.

Happier, more fulfilled people. I truly believe it
is our job to
build others up and that they need it. It is a
good thing, in
and of itself to invest in the lives of others by
praising and
encouraging them. Even if we never get anything in
return, it is
the right thing to do to build up other people.
Someone else
will always come along to tear them down; the
successful
person will instill in them the power of praise!

Some ways to praise Character traits.

Is there someone you know who is joyful?
Hard-working?
Honest? Then let them know how much you appreciate
that in
them. You can do it with a word or a note, or a
phone call. Say
something like this, "You know Tom, I think it is
great that
you are such a hard-worker. It seems like you are
always the
first one here and the last one to leave. You
really set a good
example and I want you to know how much I
appreciate that."

Here's another example, "Sue, I don't know if
anybody else has
told you this, but your work on the Johnson
account was
excellent. You have a wonderful ability to
communicate the
vision of the project and that helps all of the
rest of us out in
our roles and tasks. Thanks for that. It is
greatly appreciated."

Other ways you can show praise and appreciation is
with a
card, a gift, or time off from work. Make it your
goal to praise
at least five people a day. If you can, praise ten
people a day.
Or perhaps you can try to praise everyone you come
in contact
with. It will take work but it is possible. It
just takes discipline
and a little work. Anyway you look at it, there is
power in
praising people. First for them, then for you!

2 The Power of Positive Thinking

Key Point
You are what you think. You feel what you want.

/img>
Why Think Positively?

All of our feelings, beliefs and knowledge are based on our internal thoughts, both conscious and subconscious. We are in control, whether we know it or not. We can be positive or negative, enthusiastic or dull, active or passive.

The biggest difference between people is their attitudes. For some, learning is enjoyable and exciting. For others, learning is a drudgery. For many, learning is just okay, something required on the road to a job.

"Most folks are about as happy as they
make up their minds to be."

Abraham Lincoln

Our present attitudes are habits, built from the feedback of parents, friends, society and self, that form our self-image and our world-image.

These attitudes are maintained by the inner conversations we constantly have with ourselves, both consciously and subconsciously.

The first step in changing our attitudes is to change our inner conversations.

What Should We Be Saying?

One approach is called the three C's: Commitment, Control and Challenge.

Commitment
Make a positive commitment to yourself, to learning, work, family, friends, nature, and other worthwhile causes. Praise yourself and others. Dream of success. Be enthusiastic.

Control
Keep your mind focused on important things. Set goals and priorities for what you think and do. Visualize to practice your actions. Develop a strategy for dealing with problems. Learn to relax. Enjoy successes. Be honest with yourself.

Challenge
Be courageous. Change and improve each day. Do your best and don't look back. See learning and change as opportunities. Try new things. Consider several options. Meet new people. Ask lots of questions. Keep track of your mental and physical health. Be optimistic.

Studies show that people with these characteristics are winners in good times and survivors in hard times.

Research shows that,
"... people who begin consciously to modify their inner conversations and assumptions report an almost immediate improvement in their performance. Their energy increases and things seem to go better ..."

Commitment, control and challenge help build self-esteem and promote positive thinking. Here are some other suggestions.

7 Suggestions for Building Positive Attitudes
  • In every group, look for positive people to associate with.
  • In every meeting, look for one more interesting idea.
  • In every encounter, find one more concept important to you.
  • With every friend, explain a new idea you've just learned.
  • With every mentor, ask a question.
  • With yourself, keep a list of your goals, positive thoughts and actions.
  • Remember, you are what you think, you feel what you want.

                      TIME MANAGEMENT TECHNIQUES
The following time management techniques and strategies are designed to
help you manage your time and gain greater control of your life

                      General Tips and Techniques

Clear your desk and plan your activities for the next day.

First list your `time specific items, e.g. meetings and then write
down the tasks you have to complete.

Once you have prioritised your tasks, make a `to do' list and work
through the items in priority order.

Ensure that you have given yourself sufficient time to complete
your `to do' list, taking into account your daily
      interruptions.

Do difficult jobs first, when you are at your best. Look after
minor jobs when you are tired.

Fix deadlines for all jobs and stick to them. A task should only
take the time set aside for it.

Do not postpone important matters that are unpleasant. Jobs rarely
get more pleasant by being postponed. Do it
      now!

Try to arrange set times for jobs such as going through the mail,
talking with your manager or staff, computer
      input, etc.

Try to fix definite times when you would not like to be disturbed,
and make the system work except for genuine
      emergencies.

Plan your telephone calls. Make a brief note of what you want to
say and what you want to find out. It saves
      time later.

If you have several phone calls to make, do them all in a burst.

When you start a piece of work, try to finish it without
interruptions. If you have to finish it later, you will lose
time picking up where you left off.

Arrange your breaks at times when you cannot work effectively.

Plan some time for discussing routine matters with your
colleagues. Then you avoid interrupting each other all
      the time.

Learn to say `No'. Get used to asking yourself `Am I the right
person for this job?'

Monitor how you use your time, and make conscious changes to your
behaviour.

Stress and fatigue are rarely caused by the things you have done,
but by the thought of what you haven't done!

Make a habit of finishing the main job of the day before you go
home.

      CLEAR YOUR DESK!

'Paper talk' alone can cost you an hour a day in looking for
things and constant distractions.

Many people have developed the habit of their office becoming a
giant 'to-do' list; papers; `some day' stacks;files; letters; in-trays;
phone messages, etc. lying around all screaming `LOOK AT ME', `DEAL
WITH ME'. Here are some useful hints for silencing the 'paper talk'.

Put any in/out trays in a drawer or behind you on a credenza (or
even outside your office) but not on your desk.

Make it a real IN-tray, not a miscellaneous file.

EFFECTIVE USE OF THE MASTER FILES

Discard all non relevant documents (up to 85% of the documents
retained by an organisation will never be looked at again).

Remove all items from desk (each piece of paper on your desk will
distract your attention 5 times a day).

Reorganise your shelves; give preference to cupboard and shelves
rather than filing cabinets (25% space saving).

Identify, reorganise and re-label all your files clearly.

Avoid fat files by all means; you ale better off sub-dividing
subjects and grouping these sub-files into a large
      filing box.

Use colour coding facilities (eg. red/marketing, green/customers,
etc)

      PHONECALLS

Never hold on. Instead agree a time to ring back or leave a
message and your phone number.

If someone is unavailable find out the best time to call back, or
leave your number.

If you need to make regular calls agree upon a mutually beneficial
time.

Learn to leave clear messages on other people's answerphones.
Always leave your name and phone number if you want them to ring you
back.

      INCOMING CALLS CHECKLIST

If possible train your PA or a member of your staff to screen
calls and refer them to others.

Let the caller know your time constraints.

Always keep a pen and pad by the phone.

If you get a call asking for information you don't have
immediately to hand, don't look for it: arrange to call back later.

      INTERRUPTIONS CHECKLIST

If you have an unexpected visitor:

Establish at the start why they have come to see you.

Stand when they enter the room, so that they also remain standing.

If it's necessary for you to deal personally with them suggest a
later meeting, at your convenience.

Whenever possible, suggest a meeting in their office.

Set time limits to your discussion.

      Avoid engaging in small talk.

If you have a secretary/PA, agree a clear policy about who can
have access to you and who they should deal with.

If you really can't get them out of your office, leave the office
yourself.

When we think of assertiveness the first thing that comes to mind is
our ability to communicate and our self-confidence. If our
communication skills are toned and our self esteem is high we will be
able to draw on our strengths, making decisions and communicating
concerns effectively. In our day to day jobs as technicians many of us
are afraid to make decisions and speak the truth. Then we wonder why we
are faced with unpleasant, awkward, or unplanned situations.

Assertive has been defined as standing up for rights and expressing
feelings in an honest, open, appropriate and direct way which do not
violate another person's rights. Assertiveness takes the view that all
individuals can pursue their own goals, protect their own rights and
achieve results without violating the rights of others.
The following is a listing of rules to help shape a more assertive
philosophy not only in the workplace, but for other facets of life as
well.

THE SEVEN GOLDEN RULES OF ASSERTIVE PHILOSOPHY
1. By trying to govern our lives so as to never hurt anyone, we end up
hurting ourselves and other people.
2. Sacrificing our rights usually results in destroying relationships
or preventing ones from forming.
3. If we do not tell other people how their behavior negatively effects
us, we are denying them an opportunity to change their behavior.
4. When we do what we think is right for us, we feel better about
ourselves and have more authentic and satisfying relationships with
others.
5. We all have a right to express ourselves as long as we do not
violate the rights of others.
6. There is more to be gained from life by being free and able to stand
up for ourselves and from honoring the same rights of other people.
7. When we are assertive, everyone involved usually benefits.

Assertiveness is the middle ground which takes the best of
aggressiveness (without the negatives) and the best of nurturing and
autonomous behavior (without loss of self). For most individuals, it is
a learned skill. The action is genuine, complete and involves the
direct communication of goals and ideas. It is the conviction that
one's position can be expressed strongly without dominating the other.
Assertiveness is based on the observation that every individual has
"rights" and can act in accordance with these rights.

List of Rights
The right to have and express your own feelings and ideas
The right to be listened to and taken seriously
The right to ask for what you want
The right to get some of your own needs met
The right to be treated with respect
The right to say "no" at times and not feel guilty
The right to ask for information from others

Competitive Hiring: How to Win in Recruiting Technology Workers
By Terry Williams, President, T. Williams Consulting

There's a war going on. It doesn't involve weapons or soldiers but it requires
planning, strategy, and precise execution.. It's the "employment war" and those
fighting the battle are organizations that require high-tech skill sets. Even
the smallest companies need a webmaster and a network administrator. Yet there
are few candidates-or at least not enough for the demand-and companies are
fighting to attract and keep them.

Consider the statistics. The U.S. Labor Department estimates that 95,000 new
technology workers will be needed to fill job openings and replace current
workers each year until 2005. Yet in 1994, only 24,553 students earned
bachelor's degrees in computer science. While statistics are unavailable for
years since then, growth-if any-has been flat. Since reaching a high in 1986,
the number of computer science degrees awarded in the U.S. has dropped by
almost 29 percent.

The result is an extremely competitive recruiting environment for companies and
a job hunter's dream for prospective technical employees. Nearly 85% of top
executives surveyed said a lack of available technology professionals was
responsible for their hiring shortfalls this year. And it is likely to get
worse. The U.S. census predicts a 15 percent drop in residents aged 35-44,
further precipitating an already bleak situation.
Yet, despite a competitive environment, companies can attract and retain
qualified candidates. Knowing what works and what doesn't in today's business
climate is the key.
Recruiting New Talent Recruiting is as important to a business as the
development of a technology. Companies typically develop business plans but
often fail to develop a staffing plan and strategies to support it. Which
positions are most critical and in what order? Where are the pools of
candidates and what are the strategies to reach them? What qualifications are
musts, and which are wants? These factors are critical to recruiting new
talent. The strategies for recruiting has evolved with technology.

Information technology (IT) professionals generally use technology in job
hunting. That means they're not just searching for listings in the newspaper but
also on the Internet, with the Internet becoming a larger presence in job
searches of all kinds. The Internet is a place where more and more companies are
doing their recruiting. Such standard recruiting methods often attract a large
pool of potential candidates. To find the right employee, that often means
looking at hundreds to hire for one position. It is a sound strategy if you are
selective enough and have the time to sort through the candidates. If your
staffing function is set up correctly and using the technology tools available
it can quickly sort the thousands of resume postings. But with IT professionals
in such high demand, companies also are recruiting right from other companies.
Such "stealing" is standard practice in an age when company loyalty is virtually
nonexistent. Approaching employees who are not actively looking is usually done
throu potential. This strategy works. It helps companies to identify the staff
they need and to grow sensibly, even when they need to do so exponentially
within a short timeframe. But it means nothing if the employees you hire do not
stay with your company.

The Corporate Culture

What is the secret to retaining good employees? The answer is matching employees
and corporate culture. Corporate culture refers to the work atmosphere, which
tends to reflect the company's values.

People work for a variety of reasons. One is to pay the bills and collect
benefits. Although a primary reason, it's not why someone chooses one job over
another. That often depends upon the corporate culture.

Your task is to present and sell your company to perspective employees. The
best matches are those who fit your corporate culture. That will ensure your
company is attractive to them. Before any job search begins, taking a hard look
at your corporate culture and how your company is presented during the interview
process will save you time and money in the long run.

Determine the type of worker for whom you are looking. Talk to similar workers
at your company to find out what they like about working there. Decide what
perks you could offer that might support your corporate culture and also attract
those workers.
Subsidizing childcare or adoption is a good way to attract family workers, for
example. But be careful not to pigeonhole single or married workers, male or
female, into slots. It's not true that single workers tend to work longer hours
or mind travel less than married workers do.

And be creative. With the employment wars pushing the salaries up, you can often
compete with smaller, more meaningful items. Flexibility in work hours,
telecommuting, access to a gym, free vending machines and cappuccino bars all
make a difference. Training is an extremely valued perk for technology
professionals, since technology changes so rapidly and there is a fear of
obsolescence. Just make sure that the perks reflect your corporate culture, or
they won't work.

If the employee/company match is a good fit, it will help to keep your workers
working for you. Retention is very important. The cost of replacing an employee
can be as much as two to three times his or her salary in lost work, recruitment
and retraining.
Recruit the best and brightest, they will grow your company. Prepare a
staffing plan and strategy that suports your business plans objectives. Invest
in staffing with the right the tools and professionals. Look for someone
interested in being a part of the company fabric and grow with it. Then offer
them the benefits, compensation and perks to help keep them there. Companies
that focus on staffing as key to their business have the best chance of winning
the employment wars.
