I liked Medicus a lot. The main character was very interesting.

Salvete!

We'll have to decide on a reading list for 2008 soon!

We start out with the final section of Gibbon, originally re-scheduled
for January from this year. I'd like to move that to February because
Bingley , our resident Gibbon expert, won't be available in January.

So keep the suggestions coming.

I myself would like to discuss T.J. Cornell's immensely readable "The
Beginnings of Rome."

Maybe at one point we can read Jim Duffy's new novel in his Gladiators
of the Empire series, "The Fight for Rome," and he'll join us again for
the chat. My review is coming up soon. (All my work has been delayed
because of ongoing computer problems.)

Another recent novel that I like is "Medicus" by Ruth Downie, set in
Roman Britain at around the time of the death of Trajan. IIRC, Vicki has
read the book also. A paperback edition is coming out soon, Amazon has
already a pre-order listed. Vicki, could you please comment on this?

Valete,

Irene

I'd love to read this one also. I think Irene said it was maybe too long
the last time I mentioned it.

Mommsen's History of Rome Online has made some changes:

The main page still has the original URL http://italian.classic-
literature.co.uk/history-of-rome/

But if you have bookmarked individual chapters, you have to select
them again from the above.

I will make the changes on my website and blog as soon as i can get
to it.

something about this not too long ago.

Well, I should have known better <sigh>

To all of you who are actively participating in the book chat:

Making my own way through the Scullard book, I don't think we'll make
it all the way through Part I ("Rome and Italy") on Wednesday, there
is too much to absorb.

I have come to think that we may have to break up the book for an
additional session in 2008, as we did with Gibbon..

So please read as far as you can comfortably make it, and we'll talk
some more about this at the end of Wednesday's chat.

Dear Listmembers,

The Peutingerian Map, a copy of copies of Roman originals, is probably
the oldest roadmap in the world.
With the permission of the Austrian National Library, I am presenting an
on-line real-size zoomable version of it.
Several place names have been transcripted and positioned on a b/w
version to make easier their locating and the areas covered by the 11
scrolls are shown on a modern map too. I hope these pages will be useful:

click on the modern map or on a segment at the top and you'll see, for
instance:

and click on the map to enlarge

Move by clicking on the edges of the map image or by clicking on the

Click on "Whole section" or "Tabula Peutingeriana" on the left to zoom out.

I'll add one middle zoom level in November.

Hi!

Is anyone familiar with ancient history novels of Michael Curtis Ford?

If so, what is your opinion?

It has been some time since I read The Last King and The Ten Thousand. Nothing
stands
out. Both works were comprehensive and historically accurate to a student of
ancient
history. I write about Sertorius and was interested in what the author had to
say about
Mitridates and the outlaw Roman general. I recommend him for a good read.
