Hi,

I am deciding on the best books to read on the Augustan period,
particularly post Julius Caesar - non-fiction but also historical
fiction (not ashamed to admit I enjoy it!).

Here is what I'm considering, based on a reading list I've seen and
noodling around on Amazon:

Augustus; Pat Southern
Augustus; John Williams (fiction)
Augustus; Allan Massie (fiction)

I've already read and enjoyed McCullough's October Horse.

Any feedback or suggestions?

Thanks,
Greg

Greg, I would also recommend Robert Graves "I, Claudius". As for Massie, I
didn't particularly care for his profuse use of modern slang.

Lately, I have been reading and throughly enjoying the novels of Rosemary
Sutcliff, "The Silver Branch", about the usurption of Alectis in Roman
Britain, and "The Lantern Bearers", about the struggle between the Saxons
and Britains following the removal of the Roman legions from Britain.
Although these books are marketed as young adult fiction, I find them every
bit as fascinating as many of the adult historical fiction novels I have
read. Tomorrow I will start "The Shining Company".

I found a BBC dramatization of "The Eagle of the Ninth" on Ebay and enjoyed
it as well. Now I'm looking for the unabridged version on audio cassette.

Another wonderful surprise this week, I found that Audible.com is offering
Lindsey Davis' Marcus Didius Falco mystery "The Accusers". Audible
(http://www.audible.com ) offers audiobooks for download. They can be
downloaded to an MP3 player or burned to CD. I like the burn to CD option
so I can play them in my car's CD player on my commute. I have a light
listener subscription for less than $20 per month that lets me download two
books, regardless of the length or their regular retail cost. For example,
this month I selected the unabridged "The Accusers" that normally costs
$43.96 and the unabridged Elizabeth Peters Egyptian archaeology mystery, "He
Shall Thunder in the Sky" that normally costs $37.77. I just noticed that
Caroline Lawrence's young adult mystery "Thieves of Ostia" has also been
added to the offerings under historical mysteries.

I liked the one by Williams. It's in the form of letters and journal
entries by Augustus, Agrippa, Maecenas and Julia, and some others. I
don't know enough about the actual history to say whether it's
accurate, but it's a good read.

To the group owner:

I would like to extend an offer to members of your group: I will send
complimentary copies of my novel to you, and to the first three other
members of the group, who send me an email. I am not using this to
harvest emails. If you want evidence that the offer is bona fide, I
would be quite willing to send you the emails of the three persons to

Thank you, Rebecca East.

Members of this group may be interested in my novel. "A. D. 62:
Pompeii" combines vivid and accurate historical background with an
engaging story about household life in the first century.
Descriptions of characters and settings are based on ancient works of
art. The novel has received positive reviews from many different
types of readers. I will send a complimentary copy of the novel to
the first three people who send me an email at author@...

Please visit my web site:

The site has a free download of the first six chapters (an Adobe PDF
file including illustrations), reviews, reading lists on ancient Rome
(both fiction and nonfiction), and links to interesting external
sites such as photographs of a detailed clay model of the Roman
forum, MiraLab's virtual reality reconstructions of Pompeii, an
interactive map of Pompeii, places to shop for reproductions of Roman

Our next book, with three chats, will be "Catullus & His World: A Reappraisal"
by T.P. Wiseman.

However, I understand that some of you have trouble getting book, either in time
or not at all. Maybe we can find a way around it:

If you go to http://romanhistorybooksandmore.freeservers.com/booklist2.htm, you
will find that I posted an excerpt from Wiseman's Preface to the book, as well
as a Table of Contents.

The book can easily be broken down into three sections, and I will attempt to
summarize each shortly before every chat. That way, maybe those of you who don't
have the book handy still can participate. Also, Catullus' poems are easily
accessible on the web through this link:
http://rudy.negenborn.net/catullus/text2/e1.htm, home page:
http://www.negenborn.net/catullus/.

More is on the Ancient/Classical History site: http://ancienthistory.about.com/.
Type 'Catullus' in the search box.

For mystery lovers, there is Steven Saylor on the Clodia/Caelius affair: "The
Venus Throw."
