The Book Chat on OVID had been tentatively planned to begin Wednesday April 7.

Are you ready to discuss the book, or should we postpone it another two weeks?

(I personally would prefer postponement, becaus I have just come down with a
severe sore throat and don't know how I will feel in two day's time.)

Hello, all!

My hard drive crashed! I'm still hard at work putting everything back up on the
replacement drive.

I tried to get word here that there would be no chat on the 21st, but it seems
not to have worked.

My sincere apologies!

The chat will now take place on the next scheduled date--the first Wednesday of
next month--next week, May 5.

I will send out an automated reminder.

Since Spartacus was the subject of a recent TV series and discussion on this

Is anyone familiar with a novel, written by John Van Duyn Southworth
in the late 1960s, titled "The Pirate from Rome"? I have read that
the book offers especially clear and historically accurate depictions
of Roman naval warfare.

I have added some information about Howard Fast to our page
http://romanhistorybooksandmore.freeservers.com/booklist2.htm

While I do enjoy the story, and the writing style and the construction of the
novel, I'm struggling with the lack of accuracy when it comes to portraying
historical Roman figures, and more important, events which actually occurred at
a much later date, and one, Cicero's quaestorship in Sicily, at an earlier date.

My copy of the book is the one which Fast self-published and is a barebones
edition.

Does anyone have a copy that has an introduction that might help understanding
whether this was a deliberate construct, or simply ignorance, or worse,
negligence? (He has written some excellent novels about the American Revolution
and War.)

BTW, I met Howard Fast once in the early 1990s at a dinner party. And I can tell
you, he still had the crusading fire in the belly!

I read a 1996 edition with an introduction by Fast, but unfortunately, I
already returned it to the library and I don't remember what he said about
how he handled the timeline. He did mention that he wrote it while in
prison, I think.

My copy of Spartacus is from the library and was published in 1958 by Crown
Publishers, N.Y. Unfortunately, it has no introduction and begins with Chapter
1. I am only up to page 106.

In the Howard Fast interview which Irene put on the web site, Fast mentions that
he started thinking about imprisonment and slavery during the time he was in
prison himself, due to the Communist witch hunts by Joseph McCarthy. He started
researching for Spartacus when he got out of prison.
Maybe he didn't pay enough attention to surrounding events/persons and just
concentrated on writing about Spartacus. It does seem strange that he didn't
pay more attention to historical accuracy. Anyway, I am enjoying reading the
book.

I did not get a chance to participate in the book chat but I am also in
the process of reading Spartacus. I find the writing style very easy to
read but like others in the group I am having misgivings about his lack
of attention to historical accuracy. I'm almost halfway through the
novel and have not found a single Roman so far that is portrayed in a
positive light. Every Roman portrayed so far is incestuous, licentious,
callous, and/or greedy. Roman soldiers are depicted as uneducated
illiterate brutes. I am disturbed that someone is willing to defame an
entire civilization just to make a "politically correct" point about
civil rights.

I checked the Blockbuster website, http://www.blockbuster.com/.

The Kirk Douglas Movie is available--at least where I live.

The 2004 movie is not yet for rent.

I had a dinner to attend, so missed the discussion of the book. It's rather
irritated me so I stopped reading it. I hate being hit over the head with the
moral and the characters just get more irritating and less real. Is the next
book chat also on Spartacus? I'll keep slogging through if there is. Otherwise
it goes back to the library and I'll jump into my latest Gordianus adventure!

Next time we will discuss the historical accuracy--or lack of it--of the novel,
as well as the original movie and the recent TV movie (for those who have seen
it, I haven't).

Pam, I, too, am enjoying a Gordianus novel at the present - "Catalina's
Riddle". It is the last audio version of his books that I have found
and like "Arms of Nemesis", "The Venus Throw", "Murder on the Appian
Way", and "Roman Blood", I am enjoying it immensely. By focusing on a
particular event in Roman history, Steven Saylor brings a deep
understanding of the social context and politics of the period that I
find absolutely intriguing. I think my favorite, so far, has been "The
Venus Throw" because of its humorous elements. I have reviewed it on my
home page: http://darkwing.uoregon.edu/%7Emharrsch/

I tried to join the Spartacus chat last night but I don't get through
with dinner until 7 p.m. (10 p.m EDT) and I had to install AIM first. I
live in the country so suffer from an extremely slow modem connection at
home. By the time I got the software installed and entered the chat
room, only Irene was left tidying up. Next time I won't have any
software issues so hopefully I won't be too late.

The book of Stanislaw Mrozek is now in press. It will be available this summer.
Devoted to Roman epigraphy, Mrozek (who was professor in Gdansk Uty)
studied the Roman Economy.
The main part of his 26 papers are in French (2 are in German) and were
published in various periodicals.
Three studies are new.
Information, order and complete catalogue on
Moneta <http://www.cultura-net.com/moneta/content.htm>

Argent, société et épigraphie romaine (1er-3e siècles), Recueil d'études
complétées
Stanislaw Mrozek
Ce volume rassemble vingt-six textes en français et deux en allemand;
vingt-cinq d'entre eux ont été publiés dans diverses revues entre 1968 et
2002. Ils sont complétés par 3 études inédites consacrées aux prix en
Afrique, Gaule et Péninsule Ibérique.
